Macmillan Childrens Publishing Group

Fall is in full swing, and before you know it the holidays will be here.  But, before you start stressing about planning your family's Thanksgiving dinner and Black Friday shopping lists, why not take some time to enjoy a good book with your child.  The air is crisp, and with all these rainy days we have had lately, it is the perfect weather to grab a new book and snuggle up on the couch with your kids to read together.  I, for one, love a good holiday-themed book, and the folks at Macmillan Children's Publishing and Priddy Books have a few books that will make your family's Halloween extra special and fun!

Thanks to the kind folk at Macmillan, I was recently sent the following books to share with my girls and you all.  What I love about these books are that they can be enjoyed by you and your child together, or given to your kids to keep them busy and entertained during these chilly fall days, at home and on the go.

About this book:

"Christian McKay Heidicker draws inspiration from Bram Stoker, H. P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe for his debut middle-grade novel, a thrilling portrait of survival and an unforgettable tale of friendship. "Into the finest tradition of storytelling steps Christian McKay Heidicker with these highly original, bone-chilling, and ultimately heart-warming stories. All that’s needed is a blazing campfire and a delicious plate of peaches and centipedes.” —Kathi Appelt, Newbery honoree and National Book Award finalist The haunted season has arrived in the Antler Wood. No fox kit is safe. When Mia and Uly are separated from their litters, they discover a dangerous world full of monsters. In order to find a den to call home, they must venture through field and forest, facing unspeakable things that dwell in the darkness: a zombie who hungers for their flesh, a witch who tries to steal their skins, a ghost who hunts them through the snow . . . and other things too scary to mention. Featuring eight interconnected stories and sixteen hauntingly beautiful illustrations, Scary Stories for Young Foxes contains the kinds of adventures and thrills you love to listen to beside a campfire in the dark of night. Fans of Neil Gaiman, Jonathan Auxier, and R. L. Stine have found their next favorite book."

Back when my girls were little, they always gravitated towards the look and feel books, and books that had an interactive feature to them, like lift a flap or movable pieces.  So, they would have loved the "A Mischief of Monsters" book which is a board book of noises and actions for little ones.  Even though my girls are too old to really enjoy and get into this book, they did sit and let me read it to them. And, just like they did when they were little, they took turns feeling and touching the pages.  They even made funny sounds and actions as we read through the pages, as the book suggests.  If you have a little one and are looking for a cute board book to throw in your bag to pull out when you need to entertain your kids, or even a new bedtime book to end a busy day with, then you will want to check out "A Mischief of Monsters."

In addition to the interactive board book from Priddy Books, we were also sent along Priddy Books title, "Wipe Clean SPOOKY HALLOWEEN Activities." As the title suggests, this is a wipe clean activity book that kids can do at home and on the go.  You are provided with a wipe-clean pen that is attached to the spiral bound book with a string, so your kids will not lose it if they bring this fun activity book on the go.  This Halloween-themed activity book is chock full of fun games, puzzles, learn to draw and fill in the blank activities, that will delight kids of all ages. There are even two pages of stickers included in the back of the book that kids can add to the different activities that fill the pages of this wipe-clean book for added fun.

If kids find themselves struggling with a puzzle or activity, they can find the answers in the back of the book.  And, once your child is done with all the Halloween-themed activities, they can grab a tissue or wet cloth and wipe the pages clean, and start all over again, or pass along to a sibling to enjoy.  Both of my girls did all the activities in this book in one sitting, as they couldn't put it down. They said this activity book had a lot of variety in the puzzles, fill-ins, and activities, that made it fun and engaging.  And, they loved the addition of the stickers to add to the fun Halloween activities that make up this book.  This is not the first wipe-clean activity book we had enjoyed from Priddy Books, and it will definitely not be the last.  You may recall I shared a review earlier in the summer about a couple of these wipe-clean summer-themed activity books.  My girls would spend hours completing these activity books in the car during our summer travel, and still will pull them from the backseat pouches to this day to do some of the activities and games, when they are bored and don't want to watch a movie or listen to the radio.  I will be keeping an eye out for Christmas or winter-themed activity books from Priddy Books to pick up and surprise my girls with for the holidays. These spiral bound wipe-clean activity books are just the right size to fill your child's Christmas stocking with. :-)

In addition to the two Priddy Books, I was also sent a middle-grade chapter book from Macmillan to enjoy with my girls.  I love how this book is broken down into spooky stories that kids can read under their covers with a flashlight, or a around a roaring campfire.  However you choose to enjoy this book, who you and your kids will be in for a real spooktacular treat as you read through the scary stories, which will have jump out of your seat, and look behind your shoulder. :-)  I first read this book with my girls and they giggled at different parts, but at others, I could see the hair on their arms sticking up.  And, when the stories were over, they would usually let out a sigh of relief that the scary story was over. But, they wouldn't ask me to stop, as they knew these were made up stories meant to entertain, and they were loving them and how they added a little fright and fun to story time. :-)  And, after I was done reading this book to my girls, they would take turns at night to read these stories on their own.  I would oftentimes hear my youngest daughter talking in a spooky voice as she read the different stories to her stuffed animals that were lined up on her bed.:-)  If you are looking for a good book of scary stories to share with your kids this Halloween, then you will want to pick up the new "Scary Stories for Young Foxes" by Christian McKay Heidicker.

My girls and I loved these three Halloween-themed books from Macmillan, and I know you and your kids will, too.  So, with Halloween fast approaching, now is the time to pick these books up, either online, or at at nearby bookstore. Then, get ready for a spooky good time reading these books with your kids, before they spend hours doing the fun wipe-clean activity book, time and time again.
