What is the Fascination Kids Have with Dinosaurs? -- Review and #Giveaway

Disclosure: I was sent a review copy by the vendor in order to write up an honest review.  The views shared are mine and mine alone.

Have you ever wondered why kids are so enthralled with dinosaurs?  R O A R ! ! !

"As any proud parent will attest to, kids as young as TWO years of age have been able to correctly identify a tyrannosaurus!
And older kids will organize backyard digs for dinosaur bones and beg to visit dinosaur exhibits at local natural history museums.

So what is behind kids’ fascination with dinosaurs?

Freelance writer and book author Bob Strauss pondered this question for About.com and came up with some pretty solid explanations!!

·      For starters, he believes kids like dinosaurs because the huge, dangerous creatures are extinct, so kids know that dinosaurs are not a threat.

·      He also believe that dinosaurs are also role models for kids because dinosaurs are big and nobody tells them what to do – the exact opposite of a kid, who is small and is always being told how to behave.

·      Kids also like the size and scope of dinosaur skeletons, definitely a cool factor!

·     And, they also like the possibility that, like Matt Larson, a paleontologist for the Black Hills Institute of Geologic Research, they too might be able to someday discover dinosaur fossils – as he did just this summer in the plains of northeast Wyoming!

It’s time for you and your kids to join in the prehistoric fun with Dino Dan, the award-winning live-action, CGI adventure series airing nightly on Nick Junior at 5p.m. (ET), which stars 18 true-to-life, photo-real dinosaurs alongside Jason Spevack (Fever Pitch; Sunshine Cleaning) as DanDino Dan” Henderson.  Available on DVD from NCircleEntertainment, Dino Dan, was created by Sinking Ship Entertainment.

Dino Dan is an ordinary 10-year old boy with an extraordinary obsession: he eats, sleeps and breathes dinosaurs. A typical day for Dan isn’t complete unless he’s racing a T-Rex on his school track, finding a Pterodactylus in his attic or getting a baby Brachiosaurus back to its mom. But kids don’t need to imagine dinosaurs because in Dino Dan, dinosaurs lurk around every corner, they're behind every mystery, they fuel every adventure, and they help answer questions, too!

Dino Dan also specializes in getting his contrasting crew of classmates and teachers engaged in his larger-than-life adventures. Not only are Dino Dan's adventures incredibly fun, they're also incredibly educational, as each episode centers around a common kid issue like having to play with your little brother, going to the dentist, or trying to win at hide 'n' seek. These, naturally, lead Dan to wonder how the dinosaurs would act in a similar situation.

As Dino Dan comes up with a dino question or experiment to test his theories, he’s also teaching kids about science. If his first theory proves false, Dan comes up with a partial answer or discovers new information to help him resolve the question. Then Dan discovers a new way of tackling the experiment and the problem is resolved.  And since the dinos in Dino Dan don't speak, high-five, or use deductive reasoning, Dan and his pals work with the dinos' instincts as part of their scientific method for proving theories.

Dino Dan DVDs are now available in a special 4-pack through NCircle Entertainment beginning September 24, 2013.  With a suggested retail price of $24.99 for four DVDs – Ready, Set, DINO!; Dino Trackers; To Catch a Dino! and Cretaceous Creatures! – the Dino Dan 4-pack also includes a bonus augmented reality feature on the DVD package that, when the code is scanned, brings dinosaurs to life!  The four-pack is available at Target stores nationwide starting September 24th.

My Thoughts on the Dino Dan: Dino 4 Pack DVD Set:

"Did you know that a Brachiosaurus weighed up to 80 tons and a T-Rex could eat up to 500 pounds of meat in one bite?
Avid fans of "Dino Dan," Nick Jr.’s adventure-filled live action/CGI series, do! "

I first stumbled upon Dino Dan back in 2011 while flipping though the channels while Savannah was taking her late afternoon nap.  The cute little boy, named Dino Dan, caught my eye, and made me keep the television on this Nick Jr. show.  I loved watching this curious boy set out on adventures learning about and sharing facts (like the ones above) regarding dinosaurs.  He made learning about dinosaurs fun for both boys and girls.

The next day, I sat down and watched this show with Savannah, and was happy to see that she was getting into it.  And, since then, we have been tuning in daily to watch Dino Dan on Nick Jr., as well as picking up Dino Dan DVDs when they become available from NCircle Entertainment.  Have you had a chance to catch Dino Dan on Nick Jr. with your child?  What do you think of the show?  As a parent, I love how this popular children's show is geared towards both boy and girls.  I remember back in the day, boys would play with dinosaurs, while girls played with dolls.  Now, today, that has all changed.  Together, boys and girls are enjoying the same things -- like trains, dinosaurs, dolls, baking and so much more.  And, with fun shows like Dino Dan, they learn a lot of interesting facts, and get excited about things like science, history, etc.

Even though we already own two out of the four DVDs that make up this upcoming Dino Dan 4 Pack release, I couldn't resist reviewing it, as I knew the girls would love to add this collection of Dino Dan DVDs to their growing DVD library for the car.  As soon as Savannah saw me open the mail and pull out this DVD set, she didn't hesitate in asking to watching the Dino Dan: Dino Trackers DVD.  This DVD was the first one NCircle Entertainment released back at the end of 2011.  It is also my daughter's favorite of the two that we own.

The Dino DanDino Trackers” DVD contains four full filled adventure stories featuring a boy nicknamed Dino Dan (played by Jason Spevack).  He’s a curious 10-year-old, who uses the scientific method to gather clues and solve mysteries.

EPISODE DETAILS:

He Shoots, He Roars --
Dan figures out how to prove if dinosaurs were warm-blooded from Jim the reptile lizard and his puppet Denny the Dromaeosaurus.

Bones in the Backyard -- When Trek and Tristan find a bone in the schoolyard, Dan uses a paper-mache skull in Mrs. Hahn’s art class to figure out if it came from the Stygimoloch

Active Imagination -- When a T-Rex backs down from a Triceratops, Dan learns that the T-Rex is a hunter AND a scavenger!

To Flee or Not to Flee -- A substitute teachers encourages Dan and his classmates to engage in dinosaur role-playing)
This weekend, Savannah has asked her Daddy to have a Dino Dan marathon viewing party with her, instead of watching Saturday AM cartoons. :-)  To prepare, just last night before bed, she pulled out all her stuffed and toy dinosaurs and lined them up on the couch.  She told them to get their sleep as tomorrow would they would be in for a treat. :-)  Like myself, my husband also became a fan of Dino Dan after watching just one episode.  I guess you don't have to be a kid to enjoy dinosaurs! :-)  I can't wait to see what the girls think of the two new Dino Dan DVDs we will be adding to our collection, thanks to their convenient and affordable 4-DVD pack, which will retail at Target stores for only $24.99, starting Sept. 24th.
