Last week I treated my family to an advanced at home screening of The Hill, starring Dennis Quaid, and which is based on the true story of Rickey Hill.  This movie arrives in select theaters this upcoming Friday, August 25th -- check out theaters and buy advance tickets here: https://www.thehillmov.com/.  We are a big baseball family, but I have to say that I was not familiar with the Rickey Hill story, until I saw the trailer for this movie a couple weeks ago (watch the trailer below).  But, after seeing the trailer, and seeing that it was based on a true story, I was really excited to get to see it, and share Rickey Hill's inspirational story with my family.

Throughout the movie, my girls and I were reaching for tissues -- so, if you cry easy at a movie, you definitely want to have some tissues handy.  We shed tears of sadness as we watched young Rickey and his family struggle to make ends meet -- sometimes rationing off food so everyone in the family could eat, to having them thrown out of one church not knowing where the next preacher would be.  And, then the whole backstory of Rickey's legs in braces and how he dreamed of being a major league baseball player, but his father wanted him to not play and hurt himself more. Instead, his father, played by Dennis Quaid, wanted him to become a preacher like he was, and said that God had a bigger calling for him and it wasn't baseball.

The movie is a little over two hours long, but flows steadily along without any lulls.  Our eyes were glued to the screen from the moment the movie began, until the credits ended.  And, each and every time there was a baseball scene, we felt like we were in the stands watching Rickey at bat, and would cheer him on.  When he got a strike, we felt in our hearts, and we only prayed harder that he would hit a home run.  The end of this movie is a real nail biter.  If you know the Rickey Hill story, then you know he made it on to become a major league baseball player, for a short time.  But, as you watch the ending of this movie, you will find yourself on the edge of your seat as you watch Rickey bat for both teams.  You really want him to move the scouts wrong, and will be moved when his father finally comes to see him bat.  As the movie wraps up, you can read more about the real Rickey Hill and see what happened after he tried out for the scouts and where he is now.

We really enjoyed this movie, and are counting down the days until it arrives in theaters this Friday so that we can watch it again -- this time on the big screen, and with other moviegoers.  This is one movie you will find yourself wanting to watch time and time again, as it is not only a great movie with a wonderful cast, but it is one of those inspirational movies that has you stop and think about your life and what dreams you have and goals you want to achieve in life. The Rickey Hill story is truly inspirational and will not just tug at your heartstrings...but, it will also warm your heart.  We need a good movie once in a while to watch with the whole family and that will have us talking about it long after you leave the theaters -- and this is one of those movies.  Why not buy your tickets now and take your family this weekend to see THE HILL, when it arrives in theaters.  You will not be disappointed!

Here is more about THE HILL, along with the official trailer. And, be sure to read on to the end, for a chance to win a $10 Amazon gift card. :-)

Synopsis:

"Growing up impoverished in small-town Texas, young Rickey Hill shows an extraordinary ability for hitting a baseball, despite being burdened by leg braces from a degenerative spinal disease. His stern, pastor father (DENNIS QUAID) discourages Rickey from playing baseball to protect him from injury, and to have him follow in his footsteps and become a preacher.

As a young man, Rickey (COLIN FORD) becomes a baseball phenomenon. His desire to participate in a try-out for a legendary major league scout divides the family and threatens Rickey’s dream of playing professional baseball. Based on a true story, THE HILL is directed by Jeff Celentano and also stars JOELLE CARTER, country music singer and songwriter RANDY HOUSER, Golden Globe nominee BONNIE BEDELIA, and SCOTT GLENN."
