Goosebumps creator R.L. Stine teams up with the pop-culture phenomenon Garbage Pail Kids in this illustrated, New York Times bestselling middle-grade series

Don't you love when toys and trends from your generation make a come back, and you can share it with your kids? Last year, thanks to Neil Patrick Harris' 8-Bit Christmas movie, I was able to introduce my girls to the Atari and why it was the must have toy that year for Christmas.  In addition to this video game system, the movie also showcased Cabbage Patch Dolls and other fun toys of the 80's.  This gave me a reason to dig into storage and pull out some of my beloved toys my mom had saved for me to pass down to my kids.  As I was going through my old stuff, I bought card boxes full of my old Garbage Pail Kids cards.  I showed the girls these cards, and they couldn't believe I would go to the mall each Friday with my allowance money to buy a pack or two of these cards, just to try and complete my set.  Any duplicate cards I got I would bring to school the following week and trade with friends, to get cards I needed.  I thought my girls would get excited about my cool toys and collectibles from the 80's, but not so much.  It wasn't until my youngest was at the bookstore over the summer that she saw the Garbage Pail Kids books by R.L Stine on the shelf.  She picked up a book from the New York Times Bestselling Series and started to read it.  To my surprise she asked if I could buy her the book -- how could I say, "No!?"  Shortly after starting the book on the car ride home, she was hooked, and wanted to read the other books in the series. Then, when we returned from summer vacation, she asked if she could look at my Garbage Pail Kids cards...and, then, as they say, the rest was history!!! I handed over my card boxes full of Garbage Pail Kids cards, and was on the lookout for more Garbage Pail Kids books for her to read.

I was excited when I saw that the folks at Abrams Books released a 3-Book Garbage Pail Kids collection, which featured "Welcome to Smellville (Book 1)", "Thrills and Chills (Book 2)", and "Camp Daze (Book 3)".  I knew just the person to help me review this book, once it was sent my way.  My daughter was all smiles when I received the box set in the mail, and together we read a book a night at bedtime.  It was great reading together with my daughter, as she is off usually reading her own books at bedtime and not wanting to have me read to her.

As we read these three books in this popular series, I couldn't help but share my favorite childhood memories collecting Garbage Pail Kids cards and watching the 1987 movie, which I still own on VHS. :-)  I got my daughter hooked on the Garbage Pail Kids, and thanks to the 3-book box set, she has shared these books with a few of her friends, who are now also fans of the series. They love coming over and going through (my old) my daughter's complete Garbage Pail Kids trading cards collection from the 80's. :-)

If your kids love R.L. Stine Goosebumps books, then I highly recommend you check out the 3-book set from Abrams Books.  It would make for a great gift idea this holiday season...if not for your kids, for you to enjoy and relive this cool trend and series from the 80's.  Garbage Pail Kids cards were the big thing when I was a kid, and it is nice to see kids today still enjoying this crazy series and cast of characters. :-)
