Welcome in Fall with a Good Book -- Cranky Chicken Graphic Novel/Chapter Book by Katherine Battersby (Review)

I was so excited to share a new children's book with my girls since I heard of it upcoming release, as I knew they would love it...and that they did!  Cranky Chicken by Katherine Battersby is totes as a book for fans of the ever popular "Narwhal and Jelly" and "The Bad Guys" graphic novel series -- and they were spot on with the comparison, as this is exactly what my two girls said after sitting down and reading this recent release last week.

Both of my girls learned how to read by reading graphic novels like "Narwhal and Jelly", and "The Bad Guys" is a popular graphic novels series of my youngest daughter.  Both are super silly and have lots of colorful photos that grab the attention of kids of all ages, and those reluctant readers out there.  My youngest used to hate to read, but after gifting her a few "The Bad Guys" books, she was whipping through them, and wanting to read all the books in the series. And, seeing all the pages she had read, it made her feel proud of herself and accomplished as a reader.

After previewing "Cranky Chicken" with a digital version prior to receiving the final hard copy, I could't help but smile and laugh as I read through the pages of this super fun and cute graphic novel.  Come on, who doesn't love a cranky chicken?  And, pair that with limited words on a page, and lots of silly full color illustrations, and you have the perfect book for young readers. This book is geared towards children ages 6-8 years old, but my two girls ages 10 and 11, LOVED IT!  They have read it a handful of times so far, and haven't got tired of it yet. And, just this AM, I caught my youngest making her own sequel to the book, showing more fun being had by Cranky and Speedy.

If you are looking for a fun new book to get your young reader reading and excited about reading on their own, then I highly recommend "Cranky Chicken" by Katherine Battersby.  My girls and I are hoping this is the first in a series of graphic novel books about Cranky Chicken.  Crossing our fingers. :-)

About this new book:

"Narwhal and Jelly meet The Bad Guys in this heartwarming, brightly illustrated, and downright hilarious chapter book about what happens when a very cranky chicken is befriended by a very cheerful worm.

Cranky Chicken is, well, cranky. With one cranky eyebrow, cranky eyes, and even cranky, scratchy feet. But then one day, Cranky meets a very friendly worm named Speedy who wants nothing more than to be friends.

Young readers will love seeing the mismatched friendship grow over the course of three charming and laugh-out-loud short adventures as Chicken and Speedy become BFFs (Best Feathered Friends) and Speedy shows Chicken how to look on the bright side."
