Give the Gift of Origami This Holiday Season Thanks to Beautiful Paper Sheets and Step-by-Steps Books from Tuttle Publishing (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent samples from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

I just shared a review of a book I read and shared with my girls about Sadako Sasaki, who sadly passed away after her courageous battle with the atomic bomb diseases. She hoped that by making 1000 paper cranes, she would be made well again. Even though she passed away, her story now lives on her with this new book, as well as her message of hope and peace.  My girls really got into her book and crane making, and wanted to see what other animals and paper crafts they could make.  So, I reached out to the kind folks at Tuttle Publishing to see if they could send along a couple of their step by step origami books, and two paper packs, for me to share with my girls.  They sent the origami books and paper below, which my girls and I have been enjoying.

About this book:

"Fold your favorite origami animals—from cute Panda Cubs, Kittens and Penguins to the menacing Great White Shark and Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The step-by-step instructions in this book show you how to fold 120 amazing animal origami models. Once you're done folding them, you can decorate your creations with eye stickers to create a truly lifelike collection of creatures.

The following are just a few of the unique origami projects your whole family will enjoy creating with this book:

Three different kinds of cuddly Dogs and Cats

A pride of Lions

A floppy-eared Elephant, complete with pleated trunk and pile of poop!

A spiny-but-cute Porcupine—watch your fingers!

A sleepy-eyed Sloth—hang him upside down for a nap

A Panda parent and baby—including bamboo to munch on!

A playful Otter with her fishy snack

A friendly Flying Squirrel

An adorable pair of Bunnies, complete with crunchy Carrots!

Snakes, Lizards, Sharks, Crustaceans, Primates, Dinosaurs, and so much more!

The folded animal projects range from easy to challenging, and each one is clearly labeled with the difficulty level. Start with simple models and move on to the intermediate and challenging animals as your build your origami skills!

Japanese author Fumiaki Shingu is one of the world's leading origami experts, having published over 20 books on the subject. Fumiaki is an avid proponent of the art of origami in Japan, and he specializes in creating fun and easy-to-fold original origami models."

About this book:

"Japanese origami expert Hisao Fukui shows you how to create incredibly realistic paper birds and flying insects, a winged dinosaur and even an undulating Chinese dragon!

The easy-to-follow folding instructions and photos in this book present 24 challenging and amazingly lifelike models—from intermediate to complex in terms of their level of difficulty.

The 24 unique models in this book include:
  • The Swan—The multilayered wings and body give this familiar model a major three-dimensional upgrade
  • The Crane—Far from traditional, this crane rests on its built-in platform, and has an optional open wing configuration that can double as a fancy box
  • Peacocks—One with tail feathers stowed neatly behind, and another with its tail fan proudly displayed
  • The Swallow—Its distinctive bifurcated tail is on display in a kinetic diving pose
  • The Crested Kingfisher—The artfully modeled eye of this hunter appears to be on the lookout for its next meal
  • Stink Bug—there's nothing foul about this instantly recognizable shield-shaped insect model
  • Beetles—A Horned Beetle with unfurled wings and a Rhinoceros Beetle with an intimidating spiky head
  • Flying Chinese Dragon—Segmented and supple, this ancient symbol of power and good fortune is poised to pounce
  • The Dragonfly—This incredibly detailed form is the most challenging model here, but the spectacular results are well worth the effort
  • And many more!"

My girls really liked how these step by step books are set up. They have tried watching YouTube videos to learn how to make origami animals, but either the people in the video go too fast or the folds are just to difficult for them.  But, when they were able to see the step by instructions in these two books up close, they were able to go at their own pace, and were so happy when they were turning out cute flamingos, birds, butterflies, etc. all in a handful of paper folding steps.  I, too, was impressed, not just with the top quality of the origami paper sheets (which are double sides with designs), but how easy it was to make these origami creatures and animals.  I gave up after a few failed attempts of YouTube origami, but found myself really getting into the origami creating with these two books.  And, being able to sit at the table with my girls, without them looking at their phones or wanting to get up and do something else, was a gift in and of itself.

We have been having so much fun with these origami books and paper sheet packs from Tuttle Publishing.  My girls now want to make a special animal or folded creation and attach to gifts we sent in the mail to family and friends. And, they do an annual Christmas card exchange with homeschool families all over the United States, and want to include an origami crane in each card, as a way to wish hope and peace for everyone in the new year.  They are hooked on origami, and so am I, thanks to these wonderfully put together origami books from Tuttle Publishing.  We can't wait to pick up more origami books to learn how to make more things like boxes, ornaments and other fun paper folded creations.

The books and paper sheet packs are just a handful of origami related products available from Tuttle Publishing.  You can check out these and other great origami instructional books and paper packs by visiting https://www.tuttlepublishing.com/.  And, with the holidays fast approaching, why not gift your kids or family with some origami books and paper supplies? They make for great stocking stuffer ideas, and are a fun way to relax at the end of the day by folding paper into cranes, animals, etc., or to keep kids busy and entertained, when they say they have nothing to do and are bored. :-)
