“Unfortunately due to the current recommendations around the Covid-19 virus, Elevation Pictures has decided to postpone The Grizzlies from opening in theaters this weekend.   We look forward to bringing the film to theaters and audiences at a later date.”

I am really liking the different movies that are releasing in theaters lately.  They are great for families to go see together, and  have discussions above long after the movie has ended.  Just this past weekend, we ended up taking the girls to see The Way Back, which starred Ben Affleck.  He played a basketball coach who was struggling with alcoholism.  Usually movies that play in theaters are all happy go lucky movies, or don't touch on sensitive topics like mental illness, substance abuse issues, disfunctional families, racism, etc.  And, if they do touch on these topics, usually they are candy coated or don't dive too much into it.  But, after sitting and watching Ben Affleck in The Way Back, you could tell that he was giving a raw performance, and how he put his whole heart and soul into the movie.  I read after that he had just left rehab after relasping, to film this movie. Knowing this, I could see why he delivered a stellar performance.  I was also able to share about the actor battled alcoholism like the character he was playing, when talking about substance and alcohol abuse with my girls after the movie.  We had a great discussion and I answered some questions they had.  Recently, one of their friend's parents divorced as a result of the father being an alcoholic and not being nice around the mom. They girls could see, based on scenes in the movie, what alcohol addiction can do to a person, and how if not treated, it can ruin their life and the lives of those around them.  If you haven't seen The Way Back, I highly recommend it.

And, if you have seen the movie and are looking for something else to see, how about THE GRIZZLIES?  This movie releases to major market theaters on March 20, 2002, and is based on a true story.

Here is the official move trailer, and more information about this movie, which deals a small group of Inuit students are struggling to find their way, as well as effects of substance abuse.

THE GRIZZLIES is an inspiring, true story based on a group of Inuit students in a small Canadian town who are struggling to find their way. With nothing to do in their extremely tightknit community, many of them turn to alcohol and drug abuse to ignore their problems. Arriving on a one-year teaching contract, Russ Sheppard unwittingly steps in and the whole town experiences a major shift. While at first they don’t trust this newcomer, the students and elders of Kugluktuk grow to lean on Sheppard and allow him to change their lives forever.

*Please note: The film is rated-R for language and Adult Themes.

"The film has already been released in Canada and stood at #1 for five weeks at the box office upon its release. It is entertaining, inspiring, and shares a glimpse of what many families and communities are dealing with today – mental health issues. Audiences and critics alike have been loving the true story of THE GRIZZLIES for its ability to tackle very serious subject matters with heartwarming overtones, and the film currently boasts a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes."

My 8.5 year old daughter was the first to learn about this movie, as she saw a trailer online for it.  She is all about the Descendants movies and was excited to learn that one of her favorite actors, Booboo Stewart was in the, she had to see it.

And, then when I watched the trailer with her and her older sister, we also agreed that this was a great movie to see as a family.  We love inspiring movies, and this looks like an amazing movie, that will leave you moved and happy you went to see the movie, as the credits roll.
