There are only 15 days until Thanksgiving.  Have you finished your shopping list and menu planning for this special holiday that is the start of the holiday season for most?  This year, we will be heading up to my parents house to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner.  Usually I host and cook everything, but this year we are stitching things up. My parents will cook the meal, and my girls and I will make all the desserts. :-)  To get us in the mood to bake and choose our recipes, my girls and I have been enjoying a wonderful selection of picture books all centered around Thanksgiving. With all the Christmas decorations and sales going on in stores, it is hard to think about Thanksgiving.  But, we have found that by reading books like the the two I am sharing below from Macmillan Publishers, we are getting excited about turkey day and being with family, as we give thanks.

If you are looking for a fun new book to share with your kids this Thanksgiving, here are two books from Macmillan Publishers that I highly recommend. They are both under $6, and are quick and easy reads, that kids young and old will enjoy as you all get ready for turkey day and being with those you love.

BE THANKFUL POUT-POUT FISH by Debbie Diesen; illustrated by Dan Hanna: Mr. Fish learns that he has a lot to be grateful for—a message that kids and parents will love to share through the fall season and beyond.

About this book:

"The star of the New York Times bestselling series is back to celebrate Thanksgiving in Be Thankful, Pout-Pout Fish, an original board book from author Deborah Diesen and illustrator Dan Hanna.

Gobble! Gobble! It’s Thanksgiving under the sea, and Mr. Fish has much to be grateful for.

Toddlers will love swimming along with the pout-pout fish as he turns little pouts into big smiles in this original board book."

My Thoughts:

Both of my girls were first introduced to Pout Pout fish books in preschool. And, ever since then, they love adding new Pout Pout fish to their collection. Yes, they are getting older and love to read on their own, but books like this are still fun to read or have me read to them, especially if they are holiday themed.  This particular book is all about Thanksgiving and being thankful for those around us and what we have. Kids young and old will love the story, while taking in all the colorful and playful illustrations of Pout Pout fish and his friends under the sea.

I will say, though, that little ones may not fully grasp the text of the story as it is a little advanced for them.  But, parents can simplify the text to explain why we celebrate Thanksgiving and what we are all thankful for, including Pout Pout Fish.  The board book is sturdy enough to be brought on to share with kids on the go, or for little hands to man handle and not rip pages.  This book will last a long time, and that is good because your kids will love having you read it to them this Thanksgiving and for more Thanksgivings to come.

BAD KITTY DOES NOT LIKE THANKSGIVING by Nick Bruel: Kitty does not like Thanksgiving. Kitty LOVES Thanksgiving. Specifically, Kitty loves turkey . . . and will do anything to get her paws on it.

About this book:

"New York Times bestselling author/illustrator Nick Bruel's naughty feline is back in the holiday adventure Bad Kitty Does Not Like Thanksgiving.

Kitty does not like Thanksgiving.
Kitty LOVES Thanksgiving.
Specifically, Kitty loves turkey . . . and will do anything to get her paws on it.
So, Kitty comes up with a plan but in perfect cantankerous cat fashion, can’t quite pull it off and ends up with the turkey (and all the fixins’) on her head.

No, Kitty does not like Thanksgiving."

My Thoughts:
"Bad Kitty" is another book series my girls were first introduced to years ago in preschool. My oldest loves animals - cats and dogs especially, so the Bad Kitty books were a hit with her from the start.  And, now that she is older and reading on her own, she continues to reach for and read these fun books.
In this particular release, we see Bad Kitty trying to get her paws on the Thanksgiving turkey -- her favorite part of the holiday.  But, if you know this series, you know this kitty is naughty and that things will never go as planned. As kids read or listen to this book, they will see this naughty kitty ruin all the dishes prepared for the meal, as she tries to get her hands on the turkey, which eventually comes toppling down on her.  Will Bad Kitty be a fan of Thanksgiving after all these mishaps...I don't think so!  Fans of "Bad Kitty" books will love this Thanksgiving-themed books, and giggle all the way through, as they see the mess this naughty kitty makes.
