If you follow my blog then you have probably read countless board game reviews I have shared over the years, or read how my family is big into board games and family game night. Usually every Saturday night we will spend a few hours playing board games after dinner. It is something we have been doing since the girls were little, and it just stuck, and was something that everyone looked forward to after a long week. And, now years later, we still have game night, in which we play classic board or card games, and on occasion come up with new games to play. Usually my oldest daughter will come up with new rules for a game in hopes to sway the odds of winning in her favor. She hates to lose, so any opportunity to switch things up, she is all for it.
So, when I was contacted last month to see about reviewing and featuring a fun new book, "BOARD GAMES TO CREATE AND PLAY," I jumped at the opportunity to review it, as I knew my girls would have a blast inventing and playing 100's of games, especially my oldest daughter. When I first received the book, I spent time going through the book, and have to say I was impressed with how this book is laid out. It includes everything you need to create and play 100's of board games, thanks to 20 board game designs, 25 rule pages, 6 role cards, 9 action cards, 24 movement tokens, 36 counters, 1 countdown timer and even a score track. All the games need 2 or more players to play, and are expected to last about 60 minutes to play. So, make sure you have ample time to really get into a game when you sit down to play these create and play games. My girls are usually used to quick turnaround around games, with multiple rematches. But, after creating a few games and reading through the rules, the girls realized that these were longer play time board games. They didn't mind, though, as they got into each of the games we worked together as a family to create. And, when the game was over, they couldn't wait to play it again.
Each game you create starts the same way --- a simple board game design with basic rules. Then, the real fun begins, as you work together as a family or group to build out a more complex game. Imagine being able to create your own game with your own rules...this is what you get with the new BOARD GAMES TO CREATE AND PLAY book. You can create a race against the clock game, a murder mystery, or so many other themed games. The sky is the limit to what type of game you can create and the rules you set up. But, once you are done creating and tweaking game play, the real fun begins, as you see your game play out right before your eyes which each player's turn.
We have never come across an invent your own board game book like this before, and I am so happy I was able to review it and share it with my family. Like I said, we have only created a handful of games, and can't wait for Saturday to get here so that we can plays these games, and work together to create a new one. And, come the holidays, we will have some really fun games to share with family and friends who come to visit and join us for game night.
