(Also available in paperback, Audio CD, Kindle and Audiobook formats)

I am so thankful for this year's summer reading program at the local libraries, as it got my youngest daughter, who was a reluctant reader up until this point, excited about reading, and reading over 100 books over the past three months alone.  It was like she was hit with the book bug, and has been reading up a storm, along with her older sister ever since.  Maybe it was the fun incentives the different libraries offered (from coupons for a free ice cream cone to small prizes with each book read), or maybe she just found her niche of books she enjoys.  Whatever it was, it hit right at the start of summer, and she has been reading non-stop ever since, with weekly requests for trips to the library to take out more books to read.

During her summer reading, my youngest found a handful of author's she loved, and had to read all their books.  One author in particular that stands out as a favorite of hers is Jeff Kinney.  If this name sounds familiar it is probably because your kids read or have read some of his bestselling Wimpy Kid books.  My daughter loves reading graphic novels and books that are just plain silly and make you laugh out loud.  And, this author makes a point to include both of these favorites in his books, including his recent release, "Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson's JOURNAL."  Prior to reading this book, my daughter hadn't read any of the author's previous Wimpy Kid books.  But, this book once finished sparked a love of the author and his characters, that my daughter took out a stack of his books, and read them cover to cover, in a little over a week.  She found herself loving each and every one of the books, that she found it hard to put them down.  I usually found her in huddled under her bed covers with a flashlight long after I sent her up to bed, just getting in a few more chapters.  :-)  And, when she was done reading a Jeff Kinney book she would pass it along to her older sister, who also got hooked on the author's books, so that she could read it, too, and then they could talk about their favorite parts of each book.

The "Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid" started my reluctant readers love for reading, and after sitting with her a couple weeks ago to have her read me this book, I can see why she and so many other kids love this author and his bestselling books.  This book is the 13th release from Kinney, but can be enjoyed from new fans of the series without having read the previous books.  I know this, as my daughter had never read the previous Wimpy Kids books, and was able to read and catch on with this book, before deciding to go back to the beginning and read all the author's previous releases.  Like I mentioned above, this silly book is what got my reluctant reader excited about reading, thanks in part to the doodling illustrations which reminded her of graphic novels and comic strips she likes to read.  And, as she read each and every journal entry, she couldn't help but smile and eager, and want to continue reading to see what happens next.

If your kids are fans of the Wimpy Kids series, and haven't read this recent release, I highly recommend picking it up for them to read, before the upcoming November release, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Wrecking Ball hits store shelves, just in time for the holidays.   I plan to pick this upcoming book up for my daughter to read during Thanksgiving break. I know I couldn't keep it until Christmas as she already knows about it, thanks to the https://wimpykid.com/ website, and has been asking each day how many more days until it is released. :-)

With big font and fun doodlings and cartoons/graphics filling the pages of this book from Jeff Kinney, even the most reluctant of readers will find themselves loving this book.  They will laugh so hard they will tear up, and not want to put the book down.  My daughters both give this book two thumbs up, and I have to agree with them, it is a must own book by this best selling author.

About this Book:

"An instant #1 USA TodayWall Street Journal, and New York Times bestseller!
Get ready for a whole new look into Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

Introducing the newest Wimpy Kid author—Rowley Jefferson! Rowley’s best friend Greg Heffley has been chronicling his middle-school years in thirteen Diary of a Wimpy Kid journals . . . and counting. But it’s finally time for readers to hear directly from Rowley in a journal of his own. In Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid, Rowley writes about his experiences and agrees to play the role of biographer for Greg along the way. (After all, one day Greg will be rich and famous, and everyone will want to know his life’s story.) But Rowley is a poor choice for the job, and his “biography” of Greg is a hilarious mess. Diary of an Awesome Friendly Kid: Rowley Jefferson’s Journal offers readers a new way to look at the Wimpy world—one fans won’t want to miss!"
