It was a sad day in our house a few years ago, when my girls stopped watching Angelina Ballerina.  When my oldest first started taking interest in the television and shows, this was the first animated series she would watch.  She had all the books by famed author, Katharine Holabird, and was Angelina Ballerina the first few Halloweens.  Even her first few birthdays we did the whole Angelina Ballerina theme, and her room was filled with stuffed animals and toys from this popular animated series.  Then, when we welcomed her sister and she started to take notice of things, this show became her favorite, too.

I lost count of how many Angelina Ballerina books and DVDs we had -- all I knew was that we used to watch the show daily, and read a handful of the books at bedtime.  It was  like a ritual and a comfort for my girls, so when they started to ask for the books less, and would turn and watch something else, I knew that this meant that they were growing up.

I still held out hope that maybe as they got older and tried out ballet that this would lead them back to Angelina Ballerina, but sadly it didn't.  Almost giving up hope that the girls would fall for another Katharine Holabird character, like they did with Angelina, I was sent "Twinkle" by Holabird and Sarah Warburton, and then it happened....the same twinkle I saw in my oldest daughter's eyes when she saw Angelina Ballerina on television for the first time, I was seeing again as she looked at this cover, which twinkled just as bright as her eyes were.  This time around, I didn't have to read the book to her as she can now read, and she saw the author's name and remembered she wrote all the Angelina Ballerina books, I have kept for them.

Instead of being a book about a mouse ballerina, this one is about a fairy girl in training.  Like most people who are learning something new, Twinkle the fairy struggles with spells that seem to come easily for the others fairies in training.  She wants to give up as she is growing frustrated with her inability to pick up and perform the spells correctly, but she persists and uses her love of singing to help her learn the spells and cast them correctly.

This really is a cute book for young children that will teach them about friendship and perseverance.  And, next to the fun story, the best part is at the end when the final two pages are filled with sparkles, glitter and shine that will have you and your child lingering to take it all in.  I am so happy I got to share this new book with my girls, and that their love of fairies brought them back to this amazing author, who I loved as a child, and loved sharing her Angelina Ballerina stories to my girls when they were little.  I can't wait more more books like this one to be released, so I can share them with my girls.  This book is truly a delight, and would make for a great Valentine's Day gift for that special fairy lover in your life.

More about this book:

"From the acclaimed author of the beloved Angelina Ballerina series comes a delightful picture book about a feisty fairy named Twinkle!

Twinkle is just starting to learn her spells in fairy school, and she can’t seem to understand that what comes naturally for all the other fairies-in-training is a bit of a struggle for her.

With spells going sideways and frustration running high, this sweet, triumphant story about persistence is perfect for parents to share with their little ones who are learning new skills."
