For our Friday night movie night we ended up watching "An Elephant's Journey," which I had received in the mail earlier that day.  My girls were excited about the DVD after seeing the cover art of a boy riding an elephant, even though they didn't know what it was about.  Earlier in the week, we had visited a zoo with some of our homeschooling friends, and the elephants were a favorite among most of the kids. So, when my girls saw this DVD arrive in the mail, it reminded them about these beautiful animals.

Before viewing the movie I shared with the girls what the movie was about -- elephant poaching. They couldn't believe that people would want to kill such amazing animals, but like the boy in the movie, they wanted to know what they could do to help prevent this.   I did mention to the girls that there would be a scene in the film that showed a dead elephant, and when it was coming up, I would let them know in case they wanted to look away.  Other than this, there really isn't a lot of other violent that would make this not appropriate for the younger audience, say 7+.

It has been awhile since I saw Elizabeth Hurley in a film.  And, it was nice to see her in a heartwarming movie like this, opposite a brilliant young actor, Sam Ashe Arnold, who really stole the show, well in this case the movie, as he played an orphaned boy who get separated from his new family (his aunt and uncle) after moving to Africa of all places, and befriends an elephant.  My youngest daughter said that this reminded her of the Jungle Book, as Mogli was also an orphan who befriends animals in the wind.

Like I said, the main story line of this movie is about elephant poaching, and we see this young orphan boy stand up against the poachers, with the help of his new unlikely friend, Indlovu the elephant.  The two develop a bond, and you can't help but smile knowing that Phoenix has a friend during this lonely and and scary time in his life, and that Indlovu acts like a protective parent towards him.  It really is a joy to watch this story unfold, and you can't help but want Phoenix and Indlovu to stop the poaching, and see Phoenix reunited with his new family.  How does this movie end?  I am not going to tell...you will just have to pick up a copy of this movie, which arrives on DVD, Digital and On Demand on October 23rd.  What I will say is that my family really enjoyed this movie, and we can't wait to watch it again.  Be sure, though, if you cry easily at movies, that you have a box of tissues ready.
