Count Down to Halloween with These Two Upcoming PBS Kids DVD Releases from PBS Distribution (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent review copies from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Are you ready for Halloween?  I isn't even September yet, but Halloween aisles filled with candy, costumes and decorations are popping up right next to the Back to School stuff.  My husband and daughters saw the Halloween store getting ready to open in a nearby shopping plaza, which got the girls excited and starting to think about what they want to be this Halloween.

Because my girls have seen the Halloween aisles in the stores while we have been doing Back to School shopping, they have pulled out some of their favorite Halloween-themed books and DVDs to watch, as they count to October 31st.  Thy were excited when they saw two new Halloween-themed DVDs arrived on our doorstep from PBS Kids.  We received "Ready Jet Go!: Jet's First Halloween" and "Garfield's Halloween Adventures" for review.

Here is more about these two upcoming DVD releases, arriving in stores on August 28th.

Available Now on Digital HD

"Public Media Distribution, LLC announced today it is releasing the new DVD “GARFIELDGARFIELD’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURES” on 8/28.. Kids and parents can join Garfield and Odie as they get dressed up as pirates to go “trick-or-treating.” Will they be able to escape the haunted house where pirate ghosts are supposed to show up?

GARFIELDGARFIELD’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURES will be available on DVD 8/28 and has a run time of approximately 74 minutes. The SRP is $6.99.

The DVD features these two fun-filled episodes:

Garfield’s Halloween Adventure
Garfield and Odie get dressed up as pirates to go “trick-or-treating.” When they attempt to cross the river in a rowboat, they accidentally end up at a haunted house where ghostly pirates are expected any minute!

Garfield Goes Hollywood
When the TV show PET SEARCH announces a pet talent contest, Jon devises an act for him, Garfield and Odie: ‘Jonny Bop and the Two Steps.’ They win the local event and head to Hollywood for the finals where Garfield and Odie cut Jon out of the act and become ‘The Dancing Armandos.’"

"PBS Distribution recently announced the first DVD from the PBS KIDS series, READY JET GO!, with “READY JET GO!: JET’S FIRST HALLOWEEN.” In the four episodes on this new DVD, Jet learns all of the classic Halloween to-dos, such as carving Jack-o-lanterns, dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating. Along the way, the kids will witness a lunar eclipse and learn all about the Red Moon.
READY JET GO!: JET’S FIRST HALLOWEEN” ($6.99 SRP) will be available on DVD beginning 8/28, and has a run time of approximately 80 minutes. Episodes of READY JET GO! are also available for digital download.

In READY JET GO!” viewers go on a journey into outer space, building on children’s curiosity about science, technology and astronomy. The series follows two neighborhood kids: Sean, who has an all-consuming drive for science facts, and Sydney, who has a passion for science fiction and imagination. They both befriend the new kid on their street, Jet Propulsion, whose family members happen to be aliens from planet Bortron 7.
The four stories on this DVD include:

“Jet’s First Halloween Part 1”
Sydney, Sean and Mindy help Jet experience his first Halloween. They come up with a list of classic Halloween to-dos, including carving Jack-o-lanterns, dressing up in costumes, and collecting candy. Celery takes the kids on a quick trip to space to see what causes a lunar eclipse. Meanwhile, Mitchell Petersen is on the case to figure out what exactly is going on with that strange Propulsion family…
“Jet’s First Halloween Part 2”
Sydney, Sean and Mindy take Jet trick-or-treating, and along the way, they learn about the Red Moon effect from some of the neighborhood scientists. Carrot and Celery turn their garage into a haunted house, which is an unexpected hit with the neighborhood. Jet and Sunspot even make Mindy’s Halloween wish come true by flying across the Red Moon pretending to be a witch and her cat on a broom.
“Diggin’ Earth”
The kids try to dig into the Center of the Earth (a la Sydney’s comic book hero, Commander Cressida), but after finding out that the center is much too hot and the layer of Earth leading up to it is solid rock, they re-vamp their plans. They decide to become the kids to dig down the deepest into the Earth. Learning about the layers of the Earth inspires Jet to make an Earth Layer Cake.
“Mindy’s Mystery”
Mindy can’t sleep one night, having been kept awake by a sweet, strong smell from outside. Sydney, Sean, Jet and Sunspot become detectives and try to crack the case of the sweet smell. At the same time, Mitchell is investigating what kept him up last night – a very bright “annoying” light. In the end, there’s a common source – the sweet smell was from a nocturnal flower, the Moonflower, which only blooms at night, after sundown. And the bright light was from the moon!"

My girls really enjoyed these two DVD releases.  They are not really big Ready Jet Go! fans, but found themselves getting into this popular animated series as they love holiday-themed episodes, and this DVD contained a 2-part Halloween special, as well as two additional full-length episodes which have already aired on television -- "Diggin' Earth" and "Mindy's Mystery."  They loved the concept of Jet and his friends using detective skills to crack the case and figure out what was keeping Mindy awake.  And, the Halloween special was so much fun, and had everything you would expect in a Halloween show -- witches, jack-o-laterns, costumes, trick-or-treating and more. :-)  If you have a Ready Jet Go! fan in your life, or have kids who just loved holiday-themed DVDs, then you will definitely want to check out this DVD.

As far as the Garfield Halloween release, this was also a hit with my girls, who were first introduced to Garfield when they stumbled upon my childhood VHS collection of Garfield shows and movies a few years back. And, ever since, they will watch anything and everything Garfield, and call me over so that we can enjoy it together.  I sat with the girls and watched this DVD, which contains a Halloween episode as well as "Garfield Goes Hollywood," and and really enjoyed it. I loved how I was able to share a favorite childhood character with my girls, and see them get excited about it, like I used to as a kid.

So, while there is still about two months until Halloween, why not start getting into the Halloween spirit with these two upcoming DVD releases, which are only $6.99 each, from PBS Distribution, and will be available on August 28th.

  1. We are certainly counting down to Halloween in our home. My daughters have already decided on their costumes. Our family loves watching Halloween family-friendly movies. The Garfield movie looks super cute. I grew up loving Garfield!
