Arriving on Blu-ray/DVD Combo on Jan. 21st from Shout! Factory -- "Raise the Titanic" (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent a copy of this movie from the vendor in order to write up an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Synopsis:

"Join the underwater race to salvage the Titanic and its vital defense cargo. Adapted from Clive Cussler's international best-seller, the story follows the exploits of American special agent Dirk Pitt as he sets out to recover vital material from the Titanic which could make the US impregnable to atomic attack. The ship is down too deep for divers and the only solution is to raise it. The incredible project must be managed in absolute secrecy because of deadly interference from a rival nation. The Titanic is finally, and majestically, brought to the surface -- but the vital, rare mineral is missing...

A breathtaking adventure from beginning to end, Raise The Titanic stars Jason Robards (Once Upon A Time In The West), Richard Jordan (Dune),David Selby (Dark Shadows), Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction) and Alec Guiness (Lawrence Of Arabia)."

My Thoughts:

While this may not be one of the best Titanic movies out there, you can't help but appreciate the score by John Barry and the amazing visual effects of its time (this movie came out back in the early 80's before all the fancy camera tricks came about).  I was expecting to watch this movie myself the other night, as my husband was done with Titanic movies after I had him watch the one with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet oh 30+ times (I have lost count).  But, the cover art drew him in, as did the synopsis on the back cover.  So, after the girls finally went to bed, we put this movie on to watch.

I was not too thrilled about the acting as it was sub par, nor the plot which at times was slow movie.  But, the opening sequence with Barry's score is beautifully done and one worth picking up this DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack just to enjoy.  And, at the end, there is a sequence where the Titanic is shown making its final trip back to port in NY, where it passes through the Twin Towers -- eerie, but also surreal.

Overall, this movie, which you have to take into account released back in the early 80's will delight Titanic fans.  My husband and I enjoyed it, and will probably watch it again in the future.
