Silly Creatures (Review)

This past Monday, I spotlighted the creator of Silly Creatures, Flor Lozano-Byrne.  If you missed my interview with Flor, click here to read it now.  Today, I wanted to share more about her unique plush toys with you, and offer one lucky reader a chance to win the K-Beu Dad plush toy I had the chance to review.

Before I tell you more about Flor's plush toys, just look at the other Silly Creatures available for purchase through her online store:

What are Silly Creatures and What Makes Them So Unique?:

The Silly Creatures were created from make-believe stories by a six year old boy named Simon (Read Silly Creature stories...) Simon’s enthusiasm led his mom to make the characters real and tangible as well as fun and educational. Read our story...

The Silly Creatures are not your regular stuffed toy filled with fluff. Instead of stuffing, they have functional organs such as stomach, guts, heart and womb that children can manipulate to discover how they work.

Polished stones or larger stuffed balls are their food. Feed them and then squeeze the food through the digestive system until it comes out the other end. This is a great way to help a child develop fine motor skills.

Silly Creatures® help children learn about internal organs and systems:

The Silly Creatures® have a digestive tube that children can manipulate and observe as they push the food through it. It is visible in some of the creatures such as K-BEU Dad and K-BEU Mom with Baby. Children introduce the food in the mouth, push it through the esophagus to the stomach and then open the flap to slide it through the guts and pull it out a rear opening. This helps small children develop their fine motor skills.

Kbeu Moms have a womb where a baby can be found and delivered. They also have a teat for feeding Baby its first meals. K-BEU Mom with Baby has a cord that connects the baby to her and it can be cut when delivering to welcome Baby to the outside world.

A heart can be found inside of K-BEU Dad and K-BEU Mom with Baby. K-BEU Dad’s heart is a pouch that can be filled with a token of love, such as a note or a small present. This makes it perfect for a gift.

My Thoughts:
Like I said, I was sent the K-Beu Silly Creatures plush toy to review.  I have to say, I have never seen a toy like this in retail stores or online, before I heard about Silly Creatures.  Being a health educator, this educational toy would have come in handy when teaching school-age children about the human body and its organs, especially the digestive system.  This plush toy would not have only entertained children with its bright colors and features, but just the ability to add stones into the toy's mouth, and push it through the stomach, out the back end, would make for a fun time.  I showed Savannah the toy and let her push the stones through.  She liked seeing them go in one side and out the other.  Even though she is too young to begin talking about the human body and its systems, I know that this toy and others in the collection will come in handy as fun teaching tools.  And, when she is not learning about the digestive system and reproduction, she can have fun using the Silly Creatures plush toys as puppets, or to store things inside.

I loved the added feature of the heart.  There is a little opening to store a message for your little one to find. And, when you order a Silly Creatures plush toy, you will receive a pet carrier.  The pet carrier adds to play value and provides a means for storage and transportation. This reusable packaging is made of 100% natural organic fibers to help reduce waste and environmental pollution as well as protect children from exposure to chemicals.

Even though this toy is for children 4+, I feel it would be well received by children of all ages.  My daughter is only 19 months, but I used it as puppet and she couldn't stop laughing.  For children under the age of 4, I would not leave them alone with the stones.  But, even children 8+ would enjoy playing with this toy, as it is truly unique.  If you are a grade school teacher, you really need to add these plush toys to your arsenal of teaching tools.  Why not make learning about the body fun?  With the help of Silly Creatures, you will!!!
