Spotlight on Mom -- Laura Beck of stripedshirt

 Striped Shirt

I have been waiting weeks to share this week's Spotlight Mom with you, as I just love her striped t-shirts.  She was so kind as to send me three shirts -- one for me and the girls to wear.  And, I have been having a ball dressing the three us up the same, and heading out together.  Not only does it make people's heads turn and make them smile, but a handful stop us and tell us how cute we look dressed together.  Now, in the past I would have said I would never dress my girls, let alone the three of us the same, but how can I resist.  Now that Savannah and Arabella are only one size apart, I have been buying matching pajamas and outfits for them to wear. They really do look like twins when dressed the same.  And, who can resist children dressed alike? :-)

Here are the girls sporting these striped tees from Laura Becks store, stripedshirt:

Stay tuned on Friday when I will share a photo of the three of us wearing our matching striped shirts, as well as more photos of them with their stripedshirts. And, one lucky reader will have a chance to win a stripedshirt for themselves or their child.  All other readers will enjoy a 20% coupon code to use in purchasing shirts from Laura's online store.  I am thinking about dressing the entire family up in these shirts for our annual holiday photo card?  Wouldn't that be fun?! :-)

As I ponder this and try to talk my husband in dressing like the girls and I, please enjoy my Spotlight on Mom interview with Laura Beck of stripedshirt.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.
I’m a 41 year old mom of 2 girls, 7.5 years and just turned 4.  They are spitfires who keep me on my toes, and were the primary reason I left an 18 year career in public relations, including running a $3M office for a big global firm.  I wanted more time with them, be the one picking them up at school, leading the girl scout troop, planning the school carnival. You get those opportunities once.  And so, I quit my public relations career and started a business dream I’d had for a dozen years: stripedshirt

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?
stripedshirt is an apparel company, of 2 color combination striped shirts for women, kids and babies, to be able to truly Show Your Colors, and support a team, school, cause, organization, holiday.  Stripedshirt came about b/c I’m a sports fan, and for years, I’ve complained that I didn’t want to have to wear a man-sized jersey with a big logo on the front and someone’s name on my back.

What is a typical work day like?
I focus on the girls from wake up til about 9:30 am, and again from 2:30 until 9 pm.  During the day, and from 9 pm until midnight, I focus on stripedshirt, and some PR consulting I’m still doing.  The PR stuff typically comes first because those are other people’s deadlines, so I may have meetings, or calls, need to develop plans, research target lists, write releases, pitch journalists.  Then I focus on any order fulfillment, stripedshirt requests or inquiries.  Any extra time I have, I spend marketing stripedshirt – finding journalists or bloggers who would likely be interested in the brand, introducing them to it, talking with people on Twitter about topical sports moments happening that match to some of my shirt colors, writing and promoting blog posts, etc.  Any remaining time I have, I do my fair share of social media, keeping in touch with friends from all phases of my life, on Facebook and Twitter.  Oh and once and awhile, I sleep! J

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?
Wow, soooo many.  But all have been interesting lessons, ways to learn new things, part of this journey I’m picking for myself (versus PR where I was servicing clients) so I’ve weirdly enjoyed every step.   I didn’t know I was really getting into the “fashion” industry at first, thought I was just starting a  Tshirt company. But this is fashion, apparel, retail, and I had to learn all those rules, and how to design a shirt, and do samples, and pattern making, and grading of sizes, iterating, etc.  Wow!  Then I had to build an infrastructure for getting people the shirts – both online for ordering, and through a fun website   - and also physically for how to package, and fulfill orders.  All this and pretty much everything else – new, and hard, but really interesting.  My biggest struggle now – and for awhile – though really is finding my customer and having them buy a shirt. L  People love my shirts, and there is great brand recognition and feedback, but I’m not getting as many orders as I need to keep this business going, so I need to do more marketing and hope for a tipping point that brings real sales in.

What did you do in your past work life?
Public relations, mostly for technology companies.

What have been some of your major successes?
In life, absolutely having 2 beautiful daughters!  In work, sticking with a job, a tough industry for 18 years, including 10 running an office that grew to $3M revenues, 16 employees – all of whom were happy and satisfied, working in a good environment. Oh and doing that with 2 kiddos.  And a very supportive husband.

What have been some of your major challenges?
The reality that today’s work requires about 11 hours of focus a day, minimally, and when you are a Mom, your kiddos need time too – and you WANT to give it to them.  Fitting it all into a day is soooo darn hard.  I tried for 5 ½ years, with one daughter, and then two, and finally gave up, and changed up my life to make my children come first.

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
Again, my family, my daughters, my husband, other family, and friends.  And, that, at the end of the day, neither PR, nor stripedshirt is brain surgery.  A bad day, a slow day, all recoverable and not a huge deal in the grand scheme

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
No secret, just constant struggle, and taking things one day at a time.  Working late at night has been a secret, but not a particularly healthy one, I guess, but it does work – I put my daughters to bed and as they are drifting to sleep, sit in their room with my laptop and get caught up on all the email and to do’s that have happened since I “turned things off” for after school time through dinner.  Then, I have my urgent things in mind to tackle from like 9 pm to midnight.  Its hard, but that lets me have the 2:30 pm til 9 pm time with the girls, to focus on them.

What is next for your business?
Growing it – I certainly hope!  Getting more stripedshirts out there, more people knowing about them and hopefully buying b/c they like the shirts – and what I’m all about.

Do you have any advice for othermom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fenceabout starting a business?
Yes – First – DO IT (if you can, if your family can take that risk financially).  Life is so short, you don’t get a do-over.  Try something and give your dream a shot.  Never wonder “what if.”  If it doesn’t work out, go back to what you also do well, and feel darn proud you put it all out there.

Then, also, be patient.  It’s not going to turn to gold over night.  Give it some time, and yourself some time, you are going to have to iterate a bit, you will get surprises along the way. Be in tune to all that and learning from it, but enjoy the process too. What an amazing learning experience!!

Tap into friends and your support network for advice, help, even just to commiserate.

And celebrate – yes if your business succeeds and you made it happen. But even if it doesn’t – celebrate that you gave it a shot.  That is SOOO huge!

Name: Robin Tacchetti
Company Name/Product/Service: Jasani LLC/ Biddy Belly
Company Location: Rockville, MD
Company Website: www.biddybelly.com
Facebook URL: biddy belly
Age of Company: 8 months
Favorite Book: To Kill A Mockingbird

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How many children do you have? What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.

Hi: I am a physical therapist and a mom of three. I have two boys ages 7,6 and a girl who is 3. I enjoy cooking ,reading, playing tennis and exercising.

Briefly explain your business. How did it come about?

My business is a marriage of my background in physical therapy and as a mom. When all of my children were babies they disliked 'tummy time' (supervised playtimefor babies on their stomach) as do most babies. By the time I had my third baby, I thought there just had to be a better way to get babies to play on their stomach and not get so frustrated. And then, I had an ah hah moment.

What is a typical work day like?

Not very typical. I am still a full-time mom without any help- so I do 5 min. here on the computer, 5 min. there, take the kids with me to fed ex to drop off shipments, make phone calls when they are busy playing or watching TV.

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?

Trying to get the word out about Biddy Belly without funding to do it.

What did you do in your past work life?

I was a physical therapist.

What have been some of your major successes?

The product is doing well and has been published on many blogs and a few magazines despite the $0 adveritsing budget.

What have been some of your major challenges?

To continue to get the word out about the Biddy Belly.

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?

When parents tell me that it really made a huge difference.

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?

I try and remember that this time with my kids will be gone quickly and that work can always wait to after they are asleep or before they wake up.

What is next for your business?

Hopefully, it will continue to do well and move into big box stores.

Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?

I think you should pursue your dreams and give it a shot. Some people may think you are crazy, but you will never know and you wouldn't want to "what if" for the rest of your life, or worse yet, down the road have someone else come out with your idea and do really well.

Company Name/Product/Service: Good Sense Design LLC/Lunchsense lunchboxes

Age of Company:  4ish years
Favorite Inspirational Quotes: Too many to list. How about this: “Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything.  That is how the Light gets in.”
Favorite Book: Also too many to list.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.

I am…lots of things, I guess.  I have three kids: girl 13, boy 11, boy 9.  Hobby-wise, I like to garden, and I’m always in the midst of some building project – currently I have a mostly-finished rabbit hutch/chicken coop & run that’s filled the better part of the last 5 months and is currently housing 6 chickens and a dozen bunnies.  There’s a bathroom project in the basement calling my name next, I think.  I like to bike as much as possible (and thus drive as little as possible), and I occasionally go on running jags for a few months at a time.
Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?

It came about because a friend and I didn’t like packing lunches for our school-age kids!  We went on a quest for the perfect lunchbox, and at the end all we had was a list of features the perfect lunchbox had to have: food containers that were sized right for our small kiddos and were dead simple to open and close, an ice pack, a drink bottle, a little jar for condiments, and all of it had to fit neatly into the box.  Lastly, all of it had to be easy easy easy to clean.  Since it didn’t exist, we set about making it.
What is a typical work day like?
Up around 7, breakfast, news, cleanup, onto the computer to answer emails, print the day’s orders and hand them off for fulfillment, then work on marketing.  At lunch I might break away outside and garden for half an hour or so.  Meetings and errands for the biz after lunch, then by late afternoon I’ll turn my attentions to getting something together for dinner.  After that I hang out with the family, read a bit, goof off with the livestock (rabbits, chickens, cats), garden some more, and occasionally we’ll sit down for a movie.  Bedtime around 11 or 12.  That’s summer, when my husband (a teacher) is off.  The school year shifts the schedule a bit, as I retrieve kids starting in mid-afternoon, but it stays otherwise pretty similar.
What has been a struggle while starting up your company?
Understanding all the parts and pieces of a business, and just how much of MY (the owner’s) time is required of each piece.  I understand now that my role is to work ON it, not IN it.
What did you do in your past work life?
Believe it or not, nothing whatsoever to do with running a lunchbox biz.  I was an entomologist and applied that training to landscape management issues, then after the arrival of the kids I shifted (wildly) into accounting.  I completed the coursework to sit for the CPA exam and did eventually pass the exam, but only after the lunchbox business was underway, so I did not work as an accountant.
What have been some of your major successes?
Hm…getting off the ground at all has been pretty amazing.  I’m proud of having obtained a patent on the design.
What have been some of your major challenges?
See ‘struggle’, above.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
Really, I don’t need extra motivators. I really, really like what I do and I can’t imagine doing otherwise.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
No secret: there is no balance, on the day-to-day level.  The ‘balance’ comes on the long term – my kids are thriving, the house has not fallen down, the garden continues to produce, my friends are still speaking to me.  Any one part of the latter list may be utterly neglected for days at a time, but overall everything seems to hang together.
What is next for your business?
Check back in a couple months and you’ll see! J
Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?
Don’t be afraid to tell friends, coworkers, etc. your ideas. Many people think that their ideas will be stolen, so they don’t tell anyone. While the risk of theft is real, it’s highly unlikely: you have a passion for your idea that others won’t, and you’ll find help on your path in surprising places, and most of your friends will sincerely want to help you succeed.  It’s also good not to discount the honest (if sometimes hard to hear) words your friends may offer.  If you are enthusiastic enough about your idea to seriously consider doing it, you already are laps ahead of anyone with whom you might share that idea.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.:

I have a wonderful daughter, Kathryn Hope, who is almost six years old.  I live in Clayton, North Carolina, which is just outside of Raleigh.  I love creating just about anything and take great pride in sending beautiful thank you notes!

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?:

My daughter loves to draw, especially mermaids.  My business came about as a creative way to make things and spend extra time with Kathryn.  She is the one that decided that glitter needed to be added to my creations.  After searching around on Etsy for a couple of days and seeing all of the handmade creations,   I was totally hooked and knew that I needed to start creating personalized stationery.  Kathryn always likes seeing her image (the little girl with the ponytail) and I am always proud to pull out a notecard and send a special "little Kathryn" to everyone we know.

What is a typical work day like?

I work full time in retail - so my days are crazy.  Typically I get up between 5-6 in the morning and check emails and respond to convos that have been sent to my Etsy shop.  I help my husband get Kathryn off to school around 7:30.  Then, if I work in the morning, it's a shower and off to work until about 5:30.  I check emails and answer convos on my lunch break.  Then, I get home around 6:30-7 and spend a couple of hours with Kathryn.  She goes to bed around 8:30pm, then I go straight to my guest bedroom and work on proofs for customers, orders that need to go out the next day, I have all of the cards that need to go out spread across my desk, dining room table, and kitchen table so the glitter has time to dry, and then I go to bed around 12:30.  Then the next morning I get up, assemble all of the glittered cards and get them off to the post office!

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?

The biggest struggle for me is getting my stationery seen.  I am currently working on getting my stationery in retail stores so that I can gain additional exposure locally.  Also, funding for my stationery business can be challenging.  For the first several months for every order I had there was something that I didn't have to finish it - so I spent more than I made at first, but once I found suppliers for my envelopes and a good source for glitter, paper, and boxes things got much easier!

What did you do in your past work life?:

I have always worked in retail.

What have been some of your major successes?:

This month, January 2011, I have started seeing an increase in sales.  I am extremely happy to see all of the business!  I also have someone working one a new box for my stationery - which will hopefully be very successful!

What have been some of your major challenges?
:

The biggest challenge for me has been funding.  When looking back on my business this past year, I would love to have had more money set aside to offset the time that it takes to be seen by customers.

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?  I am motivated by knowing that I have great stationery that brings joy to people.  Whenever someone leaves me an email that they have received the order and that it was perfect, it makes me smile!  Also, I have a goal that someone that doesn't know me personally, will send me one of my cards as a thank you, without knowing that I created the card.  Wouldn't that be terrific!

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?:

Find a business that you can share with your child!  My company is named after my daughter, and she loves what I do.  For every order that I have, Kathryn gets one of them to draw on and keep.  She has one of every invitation I have created, one sheet of every notepad, one note card and she really enjoys doodling mermaids on them!  If you can combine your business and your family, it makes it easier.  Kathryn helps me on the computer and is always quick to ask if she can "send" convos by hitting the reply button.  It is quite funny!

What is next for your business?:

My business is branching out from it's Etsy roots and will hopefully be seen in retails locations in North Carolina within the next couple of months.  I would love to see my stationery sitting on shelves in boutiques and speciality stores throughout the United States by 2012.

Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?:

Just find your niche.  Make sure that your business is something that you can see yourself doing five, ten, fifteen years down the road.  Have funding ready so that you can have all necessary equipment and supplies.  Be prepared for what you will do when your orders come in really quick.  Do you have the ability to get it done in time!  Plan ahead and don't be afraid to hire someone to do the things that you don't like to do - for example, I hate the record keeping so I find someone who can do it for me!  Remember that you can't do everything and be the best!  That keeps me doing what I love, which is cutting paper and adding glitter sparkles!

Age of Company:  1 1/2 years
Favorite Book: The Bible

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.: I have three grown children, two stepchildren, five step-grandchildren, and four grandchildren under 4 years old.  I enjoy playing with and babysitting the little ones.

My hobbies include knitting, cooking, making jewelry (I have another etsy shop:  bijouxbyfrancesca), ceramics, and dichroic glass.  I am also active in my church, where I take part in several ministries, especially mentoring younger women.

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?:  After I retired, I was wanting to find something I could do at home to keep me busy and earn a little extra money.  A friend told me about Etsy and so I opened my first shop, bijouxbyfrancesca.  Then, I decided to add Francescababy about two years ago.

What is a typical work day like?:   I am fortunate enough to have a flexible schedule.  If I am not babysitting for my grandchildren or going out, I usually work from 5 to 7 hours a day, at least 5 days a week.

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?: Learning to use the computer on my own has been a challenge -  the only class I nearly failed in high school was typing.  The teacher made a deal with me -  If I promised never to take another typing class, she would give me a D.

What did you do in your past work life? When I was pregnant with my third child, I started a business making window shades for designers.  I worked in my basement and had the luxury of being home with my children.  It was difficult, but I never regretted it.

What have been some of your major successes?:  To raise three successful, happy children, and to have been able to support my family.

What have been some of your major challenges?:  I am a horrible procrastinator (who knew, Robin?).

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?:  I really enjoy what I am doing, but if I take it easy on a particular day, I cut myself some slack and try not to feel guilty.

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?:  I don't have to any more because it is just me and my husband.   But honestly, I don't know how I did it all those years ago, except to say that since I was young I had a lot more energy.  I was able to focus on my business and my family without worrying about other things (housework, laundry) very much.

What is next for your business?:  I am going to add some hand built stoneware baby dishes.  I hope to have them up in the next month or so.

Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?:  I would not give anyone advice, but can only tell  you my own experience. It was hard, but I loved what I did and I was the best mom I knew how to be.

If you are looking for a gift for your mother, be sure to check her to “Mom’s Favorite” glass charms.  You can select from: Youngest, Oldest, Middle and First Born.

The best part about these soldered glass charms is that they vary in price between $12.99 and $14.99.  So, you are getting a handmade original for an amazing price.

In addition to these glass charms, Stacey also offers purses, bags, pillows, holiday items and photography through her Etsy site.  Horse lovers and dreamers, take a look at this beauty for only $55.00:
