Summary:

The authors of Crucial Conversations didn't set out to write a book on communication; rather, they began by researching the behaviors of top performers. They found that most of the time, top influencers were indistinguishable from their peers. But as soon as the stakes grew high, emotions ran strong and opinions differed, top performers were significantly more effective than everyone else. What the authors observed during this study and captured in their blockbuster hit, Crucial Conversations, is a distinct and definable set of skills that produce professional and personal results.

Over the past 10 years, more than 2 million people and 300 of the Fortune 500 have used the skills in Crucial Conversations to successfully navigate life's most difficult moments. And the most influential gurus and leaders of our time consider Crucial Conversations a staple of effective management:

  • Author and management guru, Tom Peters, listed Crucial Conversations as one of three "must reads for change agents"
  • #1 New York Times bestselling author, Stephen R. Covey, calls the work a "breakthrough book"

Now, 10 years later, the authors have written a second edition. Join the millions worldwide who use the skills in Crucial Conversations to realize significant professional and personal results while improving the relationships that matter most.

What's New in the Second Edition?

My Thoughts:

Do you remember the last time you had a conversation that didn’t end up well? Five minutes into it the shouting and finger pointing exploded like fireworks on the 4th of July.   Let’s face it, whether we like it or not,  we have these types of conversations with our business partners, distributors and even loved ones from time to time.  What really triggers a conversation to go arie? And, what can we do to avoid this in the future?

The book “Crucial Conversations” by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, and Al Switzler, answers these questions and more. At first glance this book looks like they are referring to conversations that happen in the business world, where stakes are high, but as the authors point out crucial conversations can happen to you anywhere.

The book is easy to read and well organize into 4 important parts. In the first section,  the authors examine what a crucial conversation really is and why they happen. For example, one of the reasons a conversation turns from normal to well, difficult, is because either party forgets the purpose of the conversation. In the second part, the authors go into detail about the basic techniques one can use right away to ensure that at the end of the conversation both parties are the winners.  And, in the last two parts of this book,  the authors dive into advance techniques that involve what to do when you are addressing an audience and you are about to share bad news with them.

Aside from techniques explained in the book, the authors have done a magnificent job by referring to real life situations and showing how the techniques can be applied. We all want to avoid getting into crucial conversations.  But, the truth of the matter is that we face them every day. Whether you are talking to your partner about introducing a new product to the market, to having a conversation with your significant other about what to do Friday night, by applying the suggestions from this book, we can make a situation less stressful.

If you are looking for a book about dealing with and having meaningful conversations in the workplace and in your personal life, then you should definitely pick up a copy of this book today.  It has helped me participate in conversations much better, since I learned the proper techniques in dealing with different situations that arise when we are dealing and conversing with others.

Disclosure:  I was sent a copy of this book in order to write up an honest review.  The views above are mine and mine alone.

Spotlight on Mommy Post -- Sally of Francesca Baby

This week, I would like to introduce you to Sally of Francesca Baby. She opened up this shop (2nd of 2 shops she has on Etsy), after becoming a grandma.  She strives to make adorable, practical, and high quality gifts that will be enjoyable for mom and baby alike! Most items are one of a kind and ready to ship. Sally can also custom make orders, so if you see an item in her shop that you just have to have, just send her a message through Etsy and she can work with you on the size and style you want.  What is great about Sally's products is that, having been a seamstress and artist for many years, all her products are of  professional boutique quality. All of the fabrics are preshrunk, machine washable and have completely enclosed seams. I highly suggest checking out her shop today if you are expecting a baby, have a new baby at home, or are looking for the perfect baby shower gift.

And, don't forget to come back on Friday and read my review about the bandanna bibs Sally sent for my daughter, Savannah to try out. In addition, you can enter to win 1 item from Sally's shop (excluding dresses), as well as receive a 20% coupon code to use for yourself or share with family and friends.

Name: Sally Webber
Company Name/Product/Service: Francesca Baby

Company Website: http://www.etsy.com/shop/FrancescaBaby
Age of Company:  1 1/2 years
Favorite Book: The Bible

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.: I have three grown children, two stepchildren, five step-grandchildren, and four grandchildren under 4 years old.  I enjoy playing with and babysitting the little ones.

My hobbies include knitting, cooking, making jewelry (I have another etsy shop:  bijouxbyfrancesca), ceramics, and dichroic glass.  I am also active in my church, where I take part in several ministries, especially mentoring younger women.

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?:  After I retired, I was wanting to find something I could do at home to keep me busy and earn a little extra money.  A friend told me about Etsy and so I opened my first shop, bijouxbyfrancesca.  Then, I decided to add Francescababy about two years ago.

What is a typical work day like?:   I am fortunate enough to have a flexible schedule.  If I am not babysitting for my grandchildren or going out, I usually work from 5 to 7 hours a day, at least 5 days a week.

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?: Learning to use the computer on my own has been a challenge -  the only class I nearly failed in high school was typing.  The teacher made a deal with me -  If I promised never to take another typing class, she would give me a D.

What did you do in your past work life? When I was pregnant with my third child, I started a business making window shades for designers.  I worked in my basement and had the luxury of being home with my children.  It was difficult, but I never regretted it.

What have been some of your major successes?:  To raise three successful, happy children, and to have been able to support my family.

What have been some of your major challenges?:  I am a horrible procrastinator (who knew, Robin?).

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?:  I really enjoy what I am doing, but if I take it easy on a particular day, I cut myself some slack and try not to feel guilty.

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?:  I don't have to any more because it is just me and my husband.   But honestly, I don't know how I did it all those years ago, except to say that since I was young I had a lot more energy.  I was able to focus on my business and my family without worrying about other things (housework, laundry) very much.

What is next for your business?:  I am going to add some hand built stoneware baby dishes.  I hope to have them up in the next month or so.

Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?:  I would not give anyone advice, but can only tell  you my own experience. It was hard, but I loved what I did and I was the best mom I knew how to be.

Book Review: The Facebook Marketing Book, by Dan Zarella and Alison Zarrella

Having recently started my own business, Inspired by Savannah, I am learning how important social media, like Facebook is, in reaching out to my target audience.  Because I am just starting out, I am doing most of the marketing legwork myself.  So, I thought this book would be a good read, and maybe shed some insight on how to use Facebook to my advantage. First off, I have to say this was a quick read, as it was written in simple English -- so, you don't need a background in marketing or public relations to understand the concepts.

The book was broken down into easy-to-read sections dealing with Profiles, Groups, Pages, Applications, Ads, Events and Facebook etiquette, and went over useful tools and features to make your Facebook experience worthwhile. It walked you through setting up a personal and business page, how to invite friends, etc.  After reading this book, I feel more confident with setting up campaign goals and executing proper Facebook marketing strategies.  I also learned how to measure the results of campaigns I run with key performance indicators.

Overall, this book is more like an introduction to the social networking world and will not answer advance questions on marketing via Facebook.  But, it is a good start for people looking to get their feet wet with social media outlets and learn useful tips in navigating through Facebook.

Disclosure: I received a free e-book copy for review purposes.  I was not influenced in my review, and my review is based only on my impression of the book I read.
