This past weekend my family and I got to screen Tyson's Run which releases in theaters on March 11th.  This family-friendly movie checks all the boxes for an amazing feel-good movie -- courage, faith, inspiration, dedication, grit and unlikely friendships/alliances.  And, I have to say this is the first movie I saw that has a teen on the autism spectrum front and center as the main character in a movie -- and this alone made me want to see the movie and share it with my girls, after seeing the movie trailer a few months back.

Both of my girls have a few friends who are on the spectrum and struggle with similar things that we see the main character in the movie deal with on a daily basis.  Having personal ties with friends who are like Tyson really pulled at both my and my girls' heartstrings.  We know how kids who may be or act different are looked at and treated poorly, and just seeing Tyson being bullied and picked on for being or acting differently when he switched from being homeschooled to going to the same school his father was a coach at, really made us take a step back and think about ways we can make sure their friends are protected and left to shine, instead of being laughed at or looked at as less than perfect.

"When fifteen-year-old Tyson attends public school for the first time, his life is changed forever. While helping his father clean up after the football team, Tyson befriends champion marathon runner Aklilu. Never letting his autism hold him back, Tyson becomes determined to run his first marathon in hopes of winning his father's approval. With the help of an unlikely friend and his parents, Tyson learns that with faith in yourself and the courage to take the first step, anything is possible."

The 15 year old teen, Tyson,  in this movie wants nothing more than for his dad to truly see him, and to appreciate him.  He longs for his father's long, and this is seen from the very beginning.  I found myself watching the beginning half hour and thinking and talking in my head wishing the father would just look up and see his son, and pull him close and give him a hug.

Four-time Grammy Award-winning gospel singer Yolanda Adams recorded If You Be-
lieve, an original song, just for Tyson’s Run.

Tyson has his father on a pedestal and thinks he is a hero...but, his dad just doesn't know how to act or show affection around him, due to his autism, which is sad.  But, then, as the movie progresses, we see Tyson's dad start coming around and seeing him realize how he has been failing as a father, and eventually sees his son in a new light, and is so proud of him.  Now Tyson has become his father's hero, and you can't help but feel fortunate to watch this story of dreams, determination and relationship mending unfold right before your eyes.

After the movie was over, my girls and I talked about the messages in the film and how they may found themselves at times seeking my approval but feeling like I am just not seeing them. Just hearing them talk had me taking a step back and realizing that with the craziness of life and days that seem to fly by, I really need to make a point to just stop and be in the moment with my girls, as they are growing up fast and soon enough will be off to college and then on their own.  I try so hard to cover all the bases with our homeschooling and extra curricular activities, that sometimes I forget to look up like Tyson's dad did in the beginning, and see my girls for who they are, and listen wholeheartedly to their dreams and aspirations.  This movie will touch your heart and have you stop and take a close look at your relationship with your kids and seek ways to be a better parent for them. And, if you cry easy, like I do, then you will want a box of tissues handy, as you will definitely need them.

If you are looking for a movie to see with your family this weekend, I highly recommend you check out Tyson's Run. It is one of those movies you will feel good about watching, and one that will open up communication with your kids to talk and reflect.  You can get your tickets now by visiting https://tysonsrun.com/tickets/.
