Even though I was born in the 70's, I have always considered by myself to be an old soul. And, when it comes to movies, most of my favorites are classics from way back when. Just the other day, my youngest daughter was looking in my closet and found my box of memorabilia I had collected when I was her age for James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and others. She had no idea who these people were, or why I would have clippings, dolls and even a coffee mug with their faces on it. Then, I shared with her that they were some of the greats of yesteryear, and starred in iconic films that continue to win over generations of movie buffs and old souls like myself.
After we got to talking more about must see movies from way back when, I shared two new paperback books I had just received in the mail, and was making my way through from Turner Classic Movies (TCM). They just came out with a "The Essentials" Package, that would make a great gift idea for movie buffs and fans of classic movies dating back to the Silent Era all the way up to present day. As we flipped through the pages of these guide books, I share with my daughter many of my favorite movies and scenes from each that resonated with me. I knew she would get excited about these books, as like me, she likes old timey movies and classics, and can sit for hours if we let her watching movies. She just stumbled upon Rocky the other day, and had to see all of them to see what she had missed (as she wasn't born when they released) :-) She was hooked on Rocky, and as she made her way through the sequels, she found herself wishing they had stopped at the first one. I told her so many others would agree with her, and that holds true for many movies that had sequels that shouldn't have been made, as the first one was always the best, and these guide books include some of those movies.
My daughter and I sat for over an hour flipping through the pages of these Essentials guide books, and made a plan to watch some of these movies together and see if would become favorites of my daughter's, like they were for me. Or, maybe there was a classic movie I hadn't seen that peaked her interest after reading about in these books, that we would both watch for the first time and love. :-) We just started watching movie together at night as a way to unwind, and it is so nice with the tree all lit up in the background, snuggling up on the couch to watch classic movies with my girls. We have great conversation, and I love sharing all these classic movies, they otherwise may never sit for, with them.
