BASED ON THE CHILLING & BELOVED ‘90’S ANTHOLOGY

DVD Available on Tuesday, August 11, And Includes Three Fan-Favorite Episodes from Original Series

With Covid this year, our Labor Day plans were cancelled. But, that didn't mean we would be stuck in the house without anything fun to do.  Labor Day weekend for most kids is the end of summer and the start of school.  But, with all the craziness of this year, most kids are looking at remote or distance learning, if they haven't already started. Even though we homeschool and school year round, Covid really has put a damper of fun mini vacations we had planned, and field trips and beach days we would have been going on all throughout the summer. So, I really wanted to make the end of summer a memorable one for the girls.  And, thanks to the folks at Paramount Home Entertainment and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, they were going to help me surprise the girls in a fun way, thanks to their "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" mailer they sent a few days earlier.  I hid it from the girls, and knew they would be all smiles when they opened the box and found all the themed goodies inside, including a tasty treat for movie night -- s'mores!

Here is a photo of the girls showing off the fun Are You Afraid of the Dark? mailer we received from Nickelodeon to celebrate the recent DVD release of this title back on August 11th...

As you can see in the photo above, we received some great Are you Afraid of the Dark? goodies....

  • A custom made glow-in-the-dark membership pin
  • A custom branded flashlight
  • A page of spooky story starters
  • Instructions for how to make your own “campfire” for indoor camping.
  • For extra fun, we’ve also included a scarily delicious s’mores recipe and the ingredients you need to make your own!

I asked my girls if they were ready to join the Midnight Society and if they were, we would be have our first meeting on Friday, August 28th?  At first I was going to wait until the long Labor Day weekend to watch the movie, but I knew the girls have been waiting to get their hands on a copy of the DVD to watch the 3 episodes, so I didn't want them to wait much longer.  I thought a fun movie night with themed activities and snacks would be a great way to say goodbye to summer...and, it sure was a hit with everyone in our house, including my husband, who is not usually a fan of these types of shows/movies.

Come Friday night, we had dinner outside, roasting hot dogs and sausage by the fire, while corn roasted on the grill.  And, when we were all done with dinner, we got all our s'mores supplies ready, and started to roast up our tasty desert.  We ended up playing flashlight tag outside, before sitting around the campfire telling some scary stories.  Then, when it started to get a little cold out, we headed indoors, where I had an indoor campfire set up, thanks to the girls making their own campfires using orange, yellow and red tissue paper that they glued all over the outside of a plastic drinking cup. We lit their indoor campfires with tea lights, and had them lined up on the floor in the living. It made for a cozy campfire setting, when the lights went out, and the movie began rolling.

I don't want to give too much away with the story line or how things end, in case you haven't seen this 3-part limited series.  What I will say, though, is that while you watch the tale unfold, you will find the hair on your arms sticking up, and yourself turning your head to look behind you whenever you hear a noise.  I have to admit, my girls tried to scare me a few times, and each time, they got me, thanks to me already on edge with the Are You Afraid of the Dark? episodes.

We really had a blast watching all three full-length episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and accepted our membership into the Midnight Society. I told the girls the next day we would have another campfire, but this time, we would be camping outside, to see if we would be spooked with all the sounds of the night, after we used the spooky story starters that came with the mailer. I also stocked up on my more s'mores supplies as you can't have a campfire without s'mores.  My husband set up a projector and sheet outside, and we laid out under the stars watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? again, before turning in and camping out for the night.

My girls said they had so much fun having a fun-filled Are You Afraid of the Dark? weekend, and forget that Labor Day weekend was coming next weekend.  They said they would have rather had a movie night and campfire like we did than go away for the holiday, and that this was super cool and super fun...so, come this upcoming weekend, that is what we plan to -- have another camp out with a movie under the starts watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? and roasting marshmallows.

So, I have to say thanks again to the folks at Paramount Home Entertainment Nickelodeon Home Entertainment for helping turn what would have been a glum Labor Day weekend during Covid into a memorable weekend that my whole family will enjoy. What a great way to say goodbye to summer!

This upcoming holiday weekend, why not consider joining the Midnight Society with your family, as you all settle in to watch the Are You Afraid of the Dark? DVD, available now.  This is one DVD that you'll want to watch time and time again.
