Zonderkidz

I love this time of year...not because the kids are returning back to school, but, because so many great new books for kids are released, just in time for Back to School.  The folks at Zonderkidz have an assortment of great books for back to school available now, and coming soon, so be sure to head on over to https://www.zonderkidz.com/. But, in the meantime, I wanted to share two stand out picture books I was recently sent that my girls and I love, and can't stop reading and enjoying together.

About this book:

"What do you get when you combine ABC News correspondent Linsey Davis’ lyrical rhymes with Lucy Fleming’s whimsical art? A culture-rich picture book that proudly showcases the beauty of diversity while celebrating all the wonderful things we have in common.
From skin, hair, and eyes in a multitude of colors to different personalities and interests, God gave us all special traits and characteristics that make us uniquely ourselves. And we all have things in common too: like sharing fun and laughter on the playground, a sense of curiosity, big feelings, and so many other things that show how we are all more alike than we are different.
Ready to celebrate all our likes and differences? So are we! And this diverse picture book—drenched in color and full of laughter and fun—will show you how."
One Big Heart is:
  • Written by Emmy-winning ABC News correspondent and The World Is Awake author Linsey Davis
  • A multiethnic, multicultural, multiracial children’s picture book that recognizes our unique differences while celebrating how alike we are as well
  • An inspiring story of inclusion and connection
  • The perfect read-aloud for kids ages 4–8

ISBN: 9780310767855

My Thoughts:

This new rhyming book, is not only filled with cute full-color illustrations that bring the story to life, but also inspires and teaches kids (and adults) about inclusion and celebrating our likes and differences.  When I first read this book to my girls, I couldn't help but smile as I read this book, as I liked how they included illustrations of children of all ethnic and racial backgrounds, which isn't something you see with children's books.  My girls are part Latina, so they were quick to pick up on the mutli-rational kids in the book, and liked seeing kids with dark skin color like they have.

Both of my girls picked up on the message of inclusion in the book, and liked how playful the story was.  When I was done reading it the first time, they were both quick to ask me to read it again.  And, since then, they have pulled it from the bookcase to read it on their own.  If you are looking for a book that is culture-rich and will resonate with kids from all backgrounds and races, then is one book not to be missed.

(Releases Sept. 3rd)

About this book:

The One and Only Wolfgang 9780310768234; Hardcover Picture Book
From Instagram sensation Steve Greig and New York Times bestselling author Mary Rand Hess comes The One and Only Wolfgang. This humorous, heartwarming story about Greig’s real-life menagerie of senior rescue animals affirms that, in a family, everyone belongs.

My Thoughts:

My oldest daughter is a huge dog and animal lover, so when she saw this book arrive at our door last week, she was ready and willing to read it and give me a review. :-)   Just looking at the front cover with the cute dogs, would make any dog lover, both young and old, want to pick up and read this book, not matter what it was about.  But, when you do sit and read this book, you can help but be touched by the heartwarming story of these senior rescue dogs.

All of the dogs we have owned were rescue dogs, and 6+ years old.  We adopted them to not only give the a better life, but also because we knew of the bond between an animal and human and the unconditional love they bring you.  After my daughter was done reading this book, she came running to tell me all about it.  She said there were some funny parts, but much of the story was touching and made you feel for these senior rescue animals.  While the book is about the rescue dogs, it translated to a bigger message of acceptance and that in a family everyone is accepted no matter their age, differences, views, etc.
