Do you have a chapter book reading in your life who loves cats and dogs?  My oldest daughter is a huge animal lover, and will read a cat or dog chapter book in one sitting -- she is that crazy about them.  And, whenever we go to the library or a book store, she always gravitates towards the animal book sections, and will walk out with a stack of new books about dogs and cats.  So, when it comes to getting her to read, I don't have to worry, as I know I can just hand her a new book that is about a dog or cat and she will sit quietly and read the book cover to cover.  Now, if only her little sister would do the same.  I have to bribe her at times just to sit and doing her reading time for school.  But, slowly she is finding books - usually graphic novels and ones about history -- that interest her, and she is starting to love reading.

With summer fast approaching, many kids will have to do some sort of reading for the upcoming school year.  Some schools have a required reading list, while others let you choose which books you would like to read, based on your grade and reading level.  And, if you don't have required reading, my parents try and get their kids to read and entice them with the local library's summer reading program, which usually carries rewards and incentives to read.  Summer is the perfect time for kids, even ones who are not big fans of reading, to grab a stack of books that interest them, and read to their heart's content -- maybe in their room on a rainy day, until a shady tree in the backyard, or even on a long car ride during summer travel.  Books spark a child's imagination and let them dream and wonder, which is part of the beauty of a child's innocence, that they should embrace while they are still young. And, hopefully as they get older, they will continue to fall in love with books and look forward to quiet time when they can pick up a good book and read it cover to cover, or even a few pages or chapters at a time.

I wanted to share a few cat and dog-themed books my oldest recently finished, from IPG.  She hasn't been able to stop talking about how good they were, and how she wants to read them again soon. She is even hoping her little sister will read one or two so that she can talk to her about them, and they can share their favorite parts, and even act out parts of the book, as to bring the book/story to life.  I was hoping my daughter could provide reviews for me, but when she wasn't talking a mile a minute about the whole plot and what happens in the end (don't worry I will not spoil the endings for you), she was saying, "Just write they were great...and a must read," before giving me two thumbs up. :-)  Before I could ask a few follow up questions, she was heading to her bookcase to grab another book to start reading. I guess she is getting a jump on her summer library reading. :-)  How can I blame her, as I used to be a bookworm growing up, and loved when school was out for the summer as I had more time to read to my heart's content, and choose books about topics I wanted to read.

I hope these books will be favorites of that special cat and dog lover in your life, or spark a love of reading for that hesitant reader, who is also an animal lover.  My youngest has since picked up one of these books and has started to read, as she heard all about it from her sister and said it sounded like an interesting and fun book to read. :-)

My Thoughts:

If your kids enjoy these two books, then they will want to check out the first two books in the Cuddle: The Magic Kitten series, shown below...

Cuddle the Magic Kitten Book 1: Magical FriendsCuddle the Magic Kitten Book 2: Superstar Dreams

You can find these two books, along with the #3 and #4 chapter books I just shared about above, over at IPG, as well as through online book retailers in Amazon and Barnes & Noble.  My daughter was quick to read through these magic kitten books, and couldn't want to have me order the first two, not just to read, but also so she could have the whole collection of this cute magic kitten series.  The font size in these chapter books is large, and there are lots of black and white illustrations, almost filling up every page, so if you have  a reluctant chapter book reader, the large font and lots of stimulating pictures will get them excited to read these books. These are the two books my youngest is working through now.  She was happy that the words were big, so it didn't feel like she had a lot of reading to do. And, the oversized illustrations helped to bring the story to life in her mind, and get to continue reading.  I read through one of these books in about a half hour, and thought they were well done.  The story is easy to follow along, and cat lovers will especially love this cute magical kitty and her best friends Olivia and Grace.  Each book in this series will bring your beginner chapter book reader on a fun adventure, and will have them not wanting to put the book down, as they will want to see what happens to Cuddle and  her friends next.  And, at only $4.99 a book, you can't go wrong  -- it really makes it affordable to grab up all four books so your child will have the Cuddle: The Magic Kitten collection, like my daughter now has.  She is hoping for more books to release, so she can go on even more fun adventures with Cuddle, the magic kitten.

About the Book:

"Ivy and her cat Queen Sardine go camping in this story about friendship, bravery, and kittens

When Ivy's friend Kei suggests that they camp out overnight, Ivy is nervous about sleeping outside in a dark garden. But brave Queen Sardine promises to keep guard outside their tent all night! As the camping sleepover looms Ivy starts to worry, though, and Queen Sardine is worried too: Big Molly has upset the other cats on Kipper Street by eating from their bowls and muttering to herself. Why is she behaving so strangely? Camping out is wonderful and the girls have great fun—until the campers are woken by frightening noises in the night. Her Majesty investigates, only to discover that Big Molly has given birth to four gorgeous kittens! One of them has wandered off and may have tumbled into the badger den. Is Queen Sardine brave enough to help find the lost kitten?"

My Thoughts:

In addition to the above mentioned book, there is also another Queen Sardine book available, to add to your growing collection from the author...

About the Book:

"There's a new kitty on the block, and Queen Sardine's not impressed

In the second illustrated Queen Sardine adventure, eight-year-old Ivy's in a fix, struggling to cope with Marcy, an overbearing new girl at school. Ivy's feline friend Queen Sardine, on the other hand, has a new cat on Kipper Street to contend with. While Queen Sardine's pride takes a battering from spoiled pedigree Princess Persia, Ivy goes too far and accidentally hurts Marcy's feelings. Can Ivy and Queen Sardine work together to sort out their new-girl problems?"

---

Just like with the other chapter books I mentioned above, this book has large print, and is full of black and white illustrations throughout, making it a quick and enjoyable read for beginner chapter book readers who love animals...cats especially.    This chapter book series is all about friendship, between  Ivy and her fearless friend Kei, as well as Ivy and her cat, Queen Sardine.  Together Ivy and Queen Sardine will tackle their fears, while learning about bravery, with fun surprises all along the way. My oldest daughter zipped through this chapter book and is waiting for the second installment to arrive so that she can see what Ivy and Queen Sardine face head on next, and the fun they have together.  Having read a little of this book, I can see why she liked it so much. The story and characters are cute, and you find yourself wanting to read on to see what happens next. Stay tuned for our review of the second book, once we get and my daughter finishes it.
