Do your kids love helping you out in the kitchen cooking and baking?  If so, then you will want to pick up the new "20 Recipes Kids Should Know" cookbook by Esme Washburn, who is only 12.  Yes, you read that right...only 12 years old and already has a published book.  Not bad, huh?  I don't think I was even thinking about being a writer or publishing a book by that age. So, hats to to Esme.  In addition to this young cookbook author, the photographs included in this book are done by Calista Washburn, who is only 17.

The perfect book for children, this fun and engaging cookbook is written and photographed by a pair of young sisters for budding chefs.

More about this book:

"Whether they're helping stir cake batter or producing their own YouTube cooking channel, kids of all ages are getting increasingly busy in the kitchen. This cookbook features twenty classic recipes that are fun, healthy, adaptable, and easy to prepare. From banana bread and the perfect grilled cheese to breaded chicken and apple pie, each recipe is written in a clear, accessible style that young cooks of every level will be able to follow. The author is a young chef whose love of cooking developed from her own family's food traditions like baking popovers with her grandmother and Sunday-night pizza making. By teaching kids basic recipes that can be adapted in endless ways, this book is the perfect launching pad to finding their way around the kitchen--or launching their own cooking careers."

These two sisters really know what they are doing in the kitchen, as you can see with the recipes and photographs that make up this new cookbook for kids.  I was really impressed at the quality of the photos of the recipes -- makes your mouth water and have you get in the kitchen to cook or bake up each and every tasty recipe shared.

We were sent an advance copy of this cookbook, and I shared with my two girls that this cookbook was made by two sisters, who also love to help in the kitchen.  The girls were amazed at how young the girls were, but also how talented they were.  It got them excited to want to be budding chefs like Esme, and they couldn't wait to sit and go through the cookbook, to flag recipes they wanted to try.  By the time the girls were done flagging recipes, they handed over the book.  They told me no need to look at which recipes they flagged to do, as it was all of them! :-)  They said they all looked so good, and based on the directions, they all looked like an easy-to-follow recipe that my two budding chefs could make, and serve up.

My girls started with the popovers and boy did they taste good.  There is nothing like a warm popover with melted butter on a cold, rainy spring day, to warm you right up. After that, they moved on chewy chocolate chip cookies and strawberry shortcake.

Yum!

I wish you could have smelled our house, as it was simply divine.  And, how could I resist being a taste tester. :-) For dinner that night, the girls agreed that pizza was in order, and thanks to the "Perfect Pizza" recipe in this cookbook, I didn't have to worry about trying to figure out what to make.

And, we had all the ingredients in the fridge and pantry, so I didn't have to run to the market to pick up anything.  The pizza was so good that there were no leftovers.  That seemed to be the case with each and every recipe we have made so far with the "20 Recipes Kids Should Know" cookbook.  They are all easy to make, and turn out amazing!

Tonight for dinner, my youngest is going to make a mashed potato recipe from this cookbook to go with a chicken and vegetables dish I am making, while my oldest is in charge of dessert.  I am still trying to work off the "Ultimate Banana Bread" recipe I sampled this AM that the girls woke up early to make, so they would have warm banana bread for breakfast.

But, she is super excited to make her first pie -- an apple pie -- and, I can't wait to try a piece with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream.  Apple pie is my weakness!

  1. Such a wonderful cook book for children. I would enjoy chewy chocolate chip cookies and strawberry shortcake as well! I think it is terrific to start children cooking and baking early in life.
