One of the main reasons I love homeschooling my girls is that we can slow down and study topics and subjects that interest them.  Yes, we have curriculum that I put together and teach the girls, but we also choose a theme or two each month to study further. For the past couple months the girls were studying space and constellations, and now we have started to delve into geology, thanks to a rock shop that opened up near us a couple months ago, and that I brought my girls to tour recently.  As soon as my girls walked in the shop and saw all the different gemstones, crystals and rocks, they were in awe.  Then, the real fun came when the owner started talking about ways in which the girls could unearth their own gemstones, and gave them each a bag of rocks to bring home to study and start their own rock collections with.

My girls made a stop at the library on the way home for the rock shop to pick up a few books about geology and collecting rocks and gemstones, and I had a few fun geology kits and rock tumbler machine I bought online, to share with the girls.  In addition the geology stuff I bought for our hands on homeschooling, I was also recently sent  the fun Discovery Galactic Fizzing Dig set, which the girls absolutely loved.

Come on, what kid wouldn't love creating fizzing, bubbling reactions that unearth real gemstones.  This set includes everything you need, including a mallet, chisel and magnifying glass, to study 6 real gemstones.

Kids will have fun learning about the scientific process with this home geology set...and, who knows, you may have a future geologist on your hands. :-)

With the holidays fast approaching, why not pick up a few fun STEM kits for your kids.  Hands on learning is always fun, and this and other kits from Discovery are sure to delight kids of all ages. Just look at just some of the fun hands-on learning kits you can pick up and surprise your child with on Christmas morning....
