Welcome in Spring with a Good Book -- Hooray for Birds! by Lucy Cousins (Review)

Hooray for Birds!

My girls are huge fans of the Maisy series, which is also written by Lucy Cousins.  So, when I heard about this book being released the end of March, I had to get my hands on a copy to share with the girls.  Not only would my girls enjoy this book, but I knew this book would make for a great addition to my annual "Welcome in Spring with a Good Book" feature, as it was all about birds.  I don't know about you, but when I think of spring, I think of birding returning and chirping throughout the day, as they find new spots to build their nests among the bushes and trees.

My girls were not disappointed when I shared this book with them.  They remembered the author's name from their Maisy books and said that the bold colors were just like Maisy books.  As far as the story, it is written in a rhyming scheme which little ones will enjoy as they follow along, stopping to admire the bright and playful illustrations.

Little ones will have fun imagining what it would be like if they were a bird.  What type of bird would you be?  I posed this question to my girls before I shared the story for the first time.  They didn't have an answer at that time. But, when the story was over, they couldn't stop talking about the different types of birds including a rooster, swan, ostrich and even a flamingo.  Each and every page of this beautifully written and illustrated children's book is filled with an array of birds that will have you child imaging they were them.  Kids will learn the different behaviors of these types of birds, and will have even more fun acting out pecking, hopping and soaring through the air motions, like my girls did! :-)

I am planning a bird week for our homeschooling soon, and will be surprising the girls with a trip to the zoo to check out a bird exhibit.  This book was the perfect introduction to birds, as it has gotten them excited about the topic. My girls are also looking forward to more bird sightings in our backyard now that the nicer weather is here and the birds are returning.

If your child is a fan of Maisy books by Lucy Cousins, or you are looking for a fun book to share at bedtime, or as a way to welcome in spring, why not pick up a copy of "Hooray for Birds!" available now in stores from Candlewick Press.  You and your child will fall in love with this colorful bird book, and find yourselves picking it up time and again to enjoy.

More About this book:

"Birds of all feathers flock together in a fun, rhyme-filled offering by the creator of Maisy. From the rooster’s “cock-a-doodle-doo” at dawn to the owl’s nighttime “tuwit, tuwoo,” the cheeps and tweets of many bright and beautiful avian friends will have children eager to join in as honorary fledglings. This day in the life of birds will hold the attention of even the smallest bird-watchers, whether at storytime or just before settling into their cozy nests to sleep.

In an exuberant display of color, Lucy Cousins invites little ones to imagine themselves as brilliant birds."
