"Everyone’s favorite frog returns in Dev Petty’s I DONT WANT TO BE BIG (Doubleday Books for Young Readers / on sale October 11, 2016 / Ages 3–7), the picture book companion to the critically acclaimed Dont Want to be a Frog. Frog is having growing pains as he takes issue with getting bigger.

Frog does NOT want to grow up. Doesn’t need to be tall. Doesn’t want to be able to jump high enough to see the tree frogs. He’s just FINE being small. Besides, if you grow up, you dont get to do fun things like jump in mud puddles with your best friend, Pig. Do you?

This hilarious story—which uses humor to teach that it’s great being exactly who you are—is sure to bring a smile to every kid who just wants to stay a kid, in addition to those who are the smallest in their class. It’s a sly and smartly funny tale that will have children and parents laughing together.

Fans of Mo Willems, Jon Klassen, and Mac Barnett will love Dev Petty’s funny Frog and all the things that make him doubt who he is and who he will be. DONT WANT TO BE BIG joins Dont Want to Be a Frog as the perfect read-alouds for both home and classroom libraries, and parents and educators alike will enjoy introducing new readers to Frog."

My Thoughts:

My girls were first introduced to author Dev Petty back in preschool when their teacher read to them "I Don’t Want to be a Frog."  They came home that afternoon and couldn't stop talking about the book.  And, that weekend we had to go to the bookstore to pick up a copy for our home library, so that we could read it whenever we wanted.  This cute book, which is popular among many small children has become a staple at bedtime with the girls and one book they will pull from the shelf and flip through themselves.

So, when I heard that Dev Petty was releasing a companion book called "I Don't Want to be a Frog," I couldn't wait to surprise the girls with a copy.  When the book arrived, I was quick to show them, and their eyes lit up.  Bella ran to the bookcase to pull the other frog book from the shelf, and they asked if we could stop what we were doing (which was school work) to read it.  They couldn't wait to see if this book was as good or even better than I Don’t Want to be a Frog.

As with the first book, I Don’t Want to be a Frog, this book's illustrations really make this an enjoyable read with little ones.  They can get lost in the illustrations as you read this easy to follow along story to them.  As I flipped through the pages of the book with the girls, they would be quick to ask to me to go back as to linger and enjoy the details of the illustrations.

When the story was over, I asked the girls what they thought.  They both had big smiles on their faces, and couldn't stop talking about their favorite parts and how this book was even better than I Don’t Want to be a Frog.  I saw the excitement in their eyes and heard it in their voices as they described the story in great detail, just like they did when they first heard I Don’t Want to be a Frog in preschool.

My girls are so happy to have another frog book from Dev Petty to add to their book collection, and can't wait for more to come out.  In the meantime, we will continue to enjoy "I Don't Want to Be Big" and "I Don’t Want to be a Frog."
