If your family is a fan of movies like the Gruffalo or Room on the Groom, then you will want to know about Stick Man.  Based on the beloved children's classic, written by Julia Donaldson, families will enjoy a wonderfully animated tale about Stick Man and his journey to return back to his family, with the help of the big man in red.

It wasn't until I was asked to share the story and movie with my girls that I became of Stick Man.  But, I am so glad I jumped at the opportunity as both the book and the movie have been a huge hit, and ones we will continue to enjoy for years to come.

So, what is Stick Man you ask?  Here is a little bit more about the movie...

More about this upcoming release:

"Public Media Distribution, LLC announced today it is releasing “STICK MAN” on DVD on November 8th.  From Magic Light Pictures, the makers of “The Gruffalo” and “Room on the Broom,” this beautifully animated adventure tells the tale of Stick Man and his epic adventure across the seasons in order to make it home to his family in time for Christmas. This film is based on the beloved children’s book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

While out for a jog, Stick Man is carried away from his family tree by a mischievous dog eager to play fetch! As he tries to make his way back to his “Stick Lady Love and their stick children three,” things only get worse as he finds himself farther and farther from home. Alone and weary, Stick Man longs to be reunited with his family for Christmas. Will a chance encounter with Santa Claus be his ticket home?

Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit,” “Sherlock”) voices Stick Man, Hugh Bonneville (“Downton Abbey”) voices Santa, and the story is narrated by Jennifer Saunders (“Absolutely Fabulous”). Also helping bring Donaldson’s alluring and bouncy rhymes to life in this heartwarming family treasure are Rob Brydon (“The Huntsman: Winter’s War”), Sally Hawkins (“Paddington”) and Russell Tovey (“Being Human”).

In addition to featuring this charming tale, the DVD includes a behind the scenes documentary about the transformation of the delightful book into a captivating film. In this 20 minute video, viewers are treated to a look into how the design of the characters and environments came about, and the creation of the beautiful film score. The documentary also includes wonderful insights from Julia Donaldson, director Jeroen Jaspaert, composer Rene Aubry, and many others.

STICK MAN” will be released on DVD November 8th.  The story has a run time of approximately 30 minutes. The DVD SRP is $12.99. “STICK MAN” will also be available for digital download."

Being a relatively short film, at only 30 minutes, this movie makes for a great film to snuggle up right before nap time or even bedtime, with the family.  Kids  and adults alike will fall in love with Stick Man and the rhyming story, that is not only enjoyable and fun, but easy to understand and follow along.  I will admit, my girls were not sure if they would like the film as they said, "It is about a stick? How much fun can that be?"  But, I told them to the give the movie a chance and within minutes of it playing, they were glued to the television.

Just like their mom who cries at sad movies, the girls teared up as they watched the movie and saw Stick Man being carried further and further away from the family tree.  They both hoped that the story would have a happy ending and that he would somehow find his way home to his family.  And, near the end, when Stick Man ends up in the fireplace, my girls had to look away, as they didn't want to see the beloved stick man burn up in the fireplace.  As they looked away, they heard a thump and looked back.  Santa Claus found himself stuck in the very same chimney that Stick Man was waiting in the fireplace below.

I will not ruin the ending for you.  Instead, I recommend you pick up this heartwarming movie when it arrives on DVD on November 8th, along with the book to share with your family.

I know that once you see sit down with your family to watch this film, you will see why my girls and I fell in love with the book and movie, and can't wait to watch it again...and again.

And, as far as the book goes, your little ones will love the whimsical and fun illustration of this rhyming tale of Stick Man.  We found ourselves reading through the pages only to linger and enjoy all the details.  My girls eyes sparkled as they heard the story, and you could tell they were already getting excited about the holidays and a visit from Santa, too.  But, before that, they had to make sure Stick Man got home safe to his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three. :-)
