Besides the degree I received from what is now Worcester State University, one of the things I am most grateful for during my years at school is being exposed to a multitude of ethnicities and their customs.  Not only did I meet my Salvadorian born husband here, but I was also placed on the "International Floor" during my freshman year, due to the others floors being filled up for incoming freshman students.  Besides a few other US-born students on this floor, the remaining students were from Russia,Vietnam, Japan, Spain and even China.  It was amazing to not only meet this diverse group of girls, but I was able to make friendships that I still cherish to this day.

And, as the holidays roll around, I can't help remember when I brought home a few of these exchange students for the holidays.  Having no other place to go, and not wanting to have them spend the holidays in the dorms by themselves, I invited them into my home, to learn more about Christmas, and celebrate the New Year with us.  It was eye opening to learn about their holidays and how they celebrated them.  By the time winter break was over, my family and I had developed a new vocabulary of words thanks to my new life long friends from all over the world. :-)

Having had this eye opening experience, and being married to a non-US born citizen, I continue to learn about and celebrate this diversity, as well as the holidays that my family and friends from all over the globe celebrate.  Besides Christmas and New Year's Eve for us here in the USA, Asians all around the world, including Asian-Americans are getting ready to celebrate Lunar New Year, which is based on the phases of the moon, and falls on January 31st 2014 of our Gregorian calendar. Lunar New Year not only celebrates the beginning of the year but also the ending of winter and the anticipated arrival of spring.  It is one of the most important holidays celebrated in countries such as China, Tibet, Korea, and Vietnam.

Best Buy also supports events which they believe are of importance to their diverse employees, customers, and communities.  The upcoming Lunar New Year is one of those important celebrations.  And, in celebration of the Lunar New Year, Best Buy is offering an Asian-inspired eGiftcard, available for purchase or gifting from BestBuy.com.  Scroll to the right of the following link until you see the red giftcard with the two Koi fish: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Electronics/Gift-Cards/cat09000.c?id=cat09000&ref=184&loc=01

  1. This post was really enjoyable for me to read. I had no idea about the luner new year thanks for sharing and that was super sweet of you to take the foreign exchange students home with you for Christmas so they didn't have to sit in the dorms alone.
