I can't tell you how many times I struggled with the girls when they were newborns/infants, when it came to checking their temperatures. When the rectal thermometer didn't work, I tried different thermometers given to me at my baby shower, but with no luck. Either the readers were wrong, or just the action of having to touch my sick children who would be sleeping, would wake them up.
