My Thoughts:

I was sent the above goodies to try out Bitsy's Brainfood with the girls.  Like I have shared in previous posts, Savannah has become a picky eater and is very selective on what she eats and snacks on.  So, when I heard about Bitsy's Brainfood and the unique flavors available, I wondered if she would give these healthy snacks a try.  Usually, she prefers cheese puffs and goldfish snacks, which leave her will an upset belly from all the cheese.  So, I am always looking for a great tasting and healthy alternative for when she is looking for snacks.

I was sent the Lemon Broccoli and Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin flavors to try with the girls and have to say that the preference was for the Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin.  At first Savannah didn't want to try them, but after seeing her little sister snacking away, she took a nibble and kept eating.  My husband and I both smiled at each other when she asked for more.

Since being sent the above snack cookies to try, I have gone ahead and bought more from   I even bought the Orange Chocolate Beet cookies, and found them to be delicious tasting.  For a family who doesn't care for beets, we are loving the healthy cookies from Bitsy's Brainfood.  And, when we are not eating these healthy snacks, Savannah is having a blast learning her ABC's thanks to their fun letter shapes.  We make three letter words for her, and then she gobbles them right up. Yum!

So, if you are looking for a fun and tasty new snack cookie to try with your family and add to your child's lunch box, why not pick up any or all of the four flavors of Bitsy's Brainfood cookies today?  You will be surprised at just how good they taste.  Now, we don't leave the house without a box.  And, when the girls ask for a snack, I as a parent will not hesitate in handing them some of these healthy cookies to munch on.

6-MiniPack of UNREAL CANDY UNJUNKED UN 41 (UNREAL CHOCOLATES) (6 Mini Snack-Pack of 1.5 OZ each - NET WT 9 OZ (252 g)

UNREAL™ Brands announces a manifesto video ( campaign as part of their mission to Unjunk™ the World. Featuring an impressive roster of celebrity ambassadors including Gisele Bundchen, Jack Dorsey, John Legend, Matt Damon and Tom Brady, UNREAL that presented “Get UNREAL™ - Candy Unjunked™” on Wednesday, September 26, 2012.  Created by esteemed filmmaker Casey Neistat, of HBO’s television show The Neistat Brothers, the video demonstrates firsthand how this unique brand has achieved the seemingly impossible: unjunked candy.

Produced this month, “Get UNREAL™ – Candy Unjunked” takes viewers to Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, and many locations in the United States as it brings to life UNREAL’s journey to reinvent candy.  Alongside Adam Melonas, UNREAL Candy Chef, the audience witnesses everything from the actual blue agave plant that sweetens UNREAL products and the palm fruit that produces the oil, to harvesting the cocoa plant and packaging the final product.  The video even features a live tasting with several of candy’s most discerning customers – kids.

“Unjunking candy is just the first step in our mission to Unjunk the World™,” said Michael Bronner, founder of UNREAL™ Brands.  “Our goal is to educate people on the benefits of removing junk from products, and to provide great-tasting alternatives. With this video, we are thrilled to give consumers an inside look at UNREAL.”

After two years and thousands of recipes, UNREAL™ launched this summer in over 18,000 stores nationwide with five candies that retail for a comparable price yet do not contain corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, artificial flavors, GMO’s or synthetic colors.  In fact, UNREAL™ candies are made with only the best ingredients.  The dairy comes from pasture raised cows in New Zealand and California without antibiotics or added hormones.  The organic palm kernel oil from a sustainable and organic plantation in Brazil.  Traceable cacao beans from farms in Ghana and Ecuador.  Natural colors instead of synthetic dyes, like red from beets and blue from purple cabbage.

UNREAL has done it with candy.  And if they can do it with candy, we can do it with anything,” comments Dr. Mark Hyman, Chairman of the Institute for Functional Medicine, four-time New York Times bestselling author, and internationally recognized leader in his field.

My Thoughts:

I picked up the peanut butter cups version of UNREAL candy the other day at CVS and can't believe how great it tasted.  When I first learned about UNREAL and how they were creating candy that was a better option for you, I was skeptical about how good it would actually taste.  Usually when people try to reinvent a product to make it healthier, you lose the taste/flavor.  But, after the first bite, I couldn't stop.  Not only was the chocolate and peanut butter flavors there, like in other popular peanut butter cup candies, but it didn't taste as heavy or leave my fingers with saturated oils like the other brands.  And, when I was done, I felt satisfied and not guilty.  Who knew that candy could taste so good and also be healthy for you. :-)

I can't wait to pick up the other UNREAL flavors to stay.  And, come Halloween this year, I will be handing out UNREAL candy to the trick or treaters.  Can't wait to see what UNREAL has in the pipelines now that they have tackled and proved they can create healthier version of popular foods.

UNREAL products are now available in 18,000 stores nationwide, including CVS, Walgreens and Kroger, and will be available in more than 30,000 retailers by mid Fall, with suggested retail prices ranging from $.89 to $1.29 for individual bars and $4.99 for the family sized bags.

Learn to Reinvent Candy
Twitter: @getunreal /

Nicky Bronner, a kid determined to prove he could unjunk candy, and Adam Melonas, an innovative chef, have collaboratively brought an UNREAL™ idea to life.  UNREAL™ products are made with wholesome ingredients, with more fiber and more protein. (this needs to be meet FDA’s requirements for “more” claims)   The dairy comes from free-range, pasture-raised cows without antibiotics or added hormones.  The palm kernel oil hails from a sustainable, organic farm in Brazil.  The cacao beans are actually traceable, sourced from farms in Ghana and Ecuador.. UNREAL™ takes the extra step in developing their candies because it’s the right thing to do for people and the planet.  With a simple idea brilliantly executed, UNREAL™ Brands has become a magnet for creative professionals. One from Google.  An interior decorator.  A P&G’er.  A guitarist from Glaceau.  A dog named Lola.  In short, an eclectic mix you’d never find in any other company in the world.  But it works.  Why?  Because they’re drawn together by a common mission.  To challenge what we’ve come to accept in our food.  To change the way junk food is made.

Daddy and Me Time with Roll & Play from ThinkFun (Review)

Does your husband find it difficult to connect with your children? My husband has told me on numerous occasions that it is hard for him to come up with creative and fun ways to play with the girls. He is not a singer, nor would he want to let his guard down to sing silly songs with the girls. And, when he can't take them to the playground or for walks when it rains, I find that he resorts to movie dates or playing on the computer with them. He tells me that he doesn't have the motherly instincts and bonding skills as I do? What do you think? Do you find this with our husbands?

So, in a way to help him interact more with the girls, I tried to find creative ways and products that he could use with them. One product that has been an instant hit with Savannah and my husband for their one-on-one time has been the Roll & Play game from ThinkFun. I have seen this in a handful of magazines, as well as online. Everyone who has this game raves about how much fun it is for little ones, as a way to introduce to them to games.

Here is more about the game, from the vendor's website:

"Roll & Play is the first game ever designed specifically for toddlers! To play, simply toss the big plush cube and identify which colored side faces up. Choose a matching color card and perform the simple activity shown. “Make a happy face,” “Moo like a cow” the activities supported by Roll & Play are designed to help your child shine, supporting healthy development and celebrating success! Roll & Play is the ideal way to gently introduce play patterns and rules through a loving, joyful play experience!"

* 1 Large Plush Cube
* 48 Cards – 8 in Each Category
* Storage Pocket for Cards
* Parent’s Guide

This game is geared towards children 18 months and up, and needs 2+ players to play.  The first time I watched my husband and Savannah play this game, I couldn't believe what I was seeing.  My husband was letting his guard down and mooing like a coo, teaching my daughter how to hi-give and doing other stunts out of his comfort zone.  I could see the enjoyment on both of their faces, especially Savannah's as she was able to play this fun and educational game with her Daddy.  My husband was amazed at how much my daughter knew, as she matched up the colored cards to the matching color on the plush cube, and how she was able to count to ten.

Even though we have only had this game for a short time, it has become a stable in my husband's one-on-one time with Savannah.  She continually asks to play it with her Daddy, and when they do, it is like they are in their own little world learning and playing together.  In addition to Daddy/Daughter time with this game, Savannah has also played with a group of friends when the come to visit.  What a great way for toddlers to learn about sharing ad playing together.  The first time my daughter played Roll & Play with friends, I noticed she had a hard time taking turn.  But, in time, she began to understand the concept of gaming playing and now loves watching others roll the ball and have their turn.

This is the second time I have reviewed a product from ThinkFun, but the first time I was sent a toddler specific toy.  I can't stop raving about this game, and how much fun Savannah has when playing it.  So, if you have toddlers and are looking for a game to play with them, why not pick up Roll & Play from ThinkFun today?

Welcome in Fall with a Good Book -- W Is for Wapiti! (Review and Giveaway)

New Release for September 2012
The Secret Mountain Makes Learning the Alphabet More Fun with a new songbook and CD

W Is for Wapiti
An Alphabet Songbook

Colorfully illustrated hardbound story book includes a CD featuring 25 original whimsical, language-building songs

Hardcover with CD, 48 pages. CD duration: 50 minutes.
Full color illustrations, song translations.
Recommended ages: 3 to 7.
Suggested retail price: $16.95 (US)

The Secret Mountain brings the fun back to the alphabet by addressing the sound of each letter, from A to Z, through amusing and lively songs. Each page of the colorfully illustrated songbook features a whimsical way to look at each letter, from “A is for Aha! Aha!” to “Z is for zoom through it because our song’s already through.” Pre-‐readers and early readers alike will enjoy thinking about the letters and words.

The songs are simply worded for these emerging readers, but there’s plenty here to challenge those who want to learn more sophisticated words like “M is for my marmot and me” and “R is for rambunctious rascals making a racket.” The title song, “W is for Wapiti,” is accompanied by a picture of a humongous beast stalking a hunter through the forest. It’s quite a turnabout! The last song, “Let’s Sing It Again,” will ensure that early readers and careful listeners become ABC experts

"Mister Elephant," a song from  W Is for Wapiti, new from The Secret Mountain in September.

Genevieve Cote created the charming watercolor artwork for the 48-page picture book.

About the MUSIC CD
The songs were written by Christiane Duchesne and Paul Kunigis, with performances by Karen Young and Glen Bower, along with a children's chorus.

"Aha Aha!" from W Is for Wapiti.

My Thoughts:

I couldn't wait to receive this review copy as Savannah has been working on learning the alphabet, and I thought this new storybook and CD would make learning the alphabet fun. Even though I have a handful of other alphabet books, this one really engaged Savannah and kept her entertained.  Not only did she enjoy when I read the storybook to her, but the music from the CD made her get up and dance.  Who knew that learning the alphabet would be this much fun.

If you are looking for a standard alphabet book, where "A" stands for apple and "B' stands for bat, then this book is not for you.  Instead, if you are looking a fun and unique way to teach children their ABC's, this book is worth checking out. Even though Savannah didn't know what many of the words were, we had a blast sounding out the letters and looking at the bright and colorful illustrations.  I can't wait until Savannah and Arabella get older and will enjoy the unique pairing of objects with letters in this book from The Secret Mountain.  But, for now, we will enjoy the storybook illustrations and the catchy tunes. :-)

The guidelines are derived from U.S. government-recommended dietary guidelines with the input of top child health experts."

My Thoughts:

I have shared in previous posts that our oldest daughter, Savannah is a picky eater.  We continue to work with her on introducing new meal options.  But, it is hit or miss on how she is feeling on a given day, if she will try and eat something new, or just want her puffs or soup.  She has recently been eating cold cuts from those snack packs in the market.  She only eats the round meat, while leaving the crackers and cheese.  I tried a piece of the ham cold cut the other day and couldn't figure out why Savannah liked this stuff, as it didn't taste like ham.  Then, I looked at the nutritional facts and was shocked at how much sodium and calories these little snack trays were.  But, my husband kept giving them to her because she would eat them.  I told him we had to find another way to let her get her cold cold fix, that was healthy.  And, the next day, the UPS guy dropped off a box filled with Ready-Pac's new Disney-themed salads and mini-meals for us to try.  I had forgotten I had requested to review these, but was so glad to see them at my door.

Just looking at them in comparison to the other snack trays we were giving Savannah, you could see that the quality of product was 10x better with Ready Pac's trays.  Not only were children getting cold cuts in the mini-meal tray, but healthy snacks like grapes, apple slices, pretzels and yogurt for dipping were included.  At first, Savannah was reluctant to try them, but when she saw Mickey Mouse (her favorite Disney character), she asked for a tray.  We sat down at the kitchen table, and I opened it for her.  When she saw the sticker, she wanted it right away.  But, I told her the sticker was a reward and would be given to her if she finished all the food in front of her.  The reward worked for her, and in less than 15 minutes she was done with everything in front of her and licking her fingers.  And, that night for dinner, when I asked her what she wanted from the refrigerator, she reached for the taco salad bowl.  I was shocked and amazed -- not just because she chose something other than soup, but that dinner was so peaceful that night.  As we ate our dinner, she sat adding her ingredients and mixing up her salad.  And, when she was done with her salad, she was rewarded with another sticker, that was included in her salad bowl.

I am so happy that Ready Pac came out with these new mini-meals and salad bowl, geared towards children.  Now, I don't feel bad when Savannah is on a cold cut fix, as I know she is getting a balanced meal.  Don't tell her, but I ended up eating the chicken Caesar salad when she was napping the other day.  It was so good, especially with the yogurt based dressing (who knew?), and was a quick meal that I could feel good about eating.  Lately, I have been grabbing anything in sight as the girls have been off their nap schedule -- when one sleeps, the other is awake. And, when lunch rolls around, I am tending to them in intervals, only to look at the clock and see it already 3PM.  And, thus the snacking begins until dinner.  But, I can grab a mini-meal or salad bowl for Savannah and I, and enjoy eating together.  :-)

If you have children in school, these would make for great alternatives to the PB&J or ham and cheese sandwich they are sent to school with.  Older kids will love seeing Phineas and Ferb and Shake it Up on the label, while the younger crowd with go crazy for Mickey Mouse and the Disney princesses.  And, you as a parent will be happy seeing them eating these mini-meals and salad bowls, compared to others on the market.
