Synopsis

Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) are more than ready to leave their adolescent problems behind. Joining the police force and the secret Jump Street unit, they use their youthful appearances to go undercover in a local high school. As they trade in their guns and badges for backpacks, Schmidt and Jenko risk their lives to investigate a violent and dangerous drug ring. But they find that high school is nothing like they left it just a few years earlier - and neither expects that they will have to confront the terror and anxiety of being a teenager again and all the issues they thought they had left behind.

21 JUMP STREET was written by Michael Bacall (Project X, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World), based on the TV show “21 Jump Street” created by Patrick Hasburgh & Stephen J. Cannell. It was produced by Neal H. Moritz (The Fast & The Furious series) and Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team, TV’s “21 Jump Street). Executive producers are Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ezra Swerdlow (The SmurfsZombieland) and Tania Landau (Made of HonorVantage Point).  The film has a run time of approximately 110 minutes, and it has been rated R for crude and sexual content, pervasive language, drug material, teen drinking and some violence.

My Thoughts:

While many of you were gathering up your girlfriends to head to the theaters this past weekend to see Magic Mike, I was able to get my husband to sit down and watch 21 Jump Street with me.  So, like you, I was able to get my Channing Tatum fix with this hilarious movie, which also stars Jonah Hill.  I missed this movie when it was released into theaters, but wasn't going to miss it when it arrived in stores recently.

Growing up in the 80's, I was a huge fan of the television show -- mainly in part because of Johnny Depp and Richard Greico.  Who wasn't?  But, you don't need to be a fan of the popular television series to enjoy this flick.  Within the first ten minutes of watching this film, my husband and I were laughing so hard.  And, this continued through the length of the movie.  When the movie ended, my husband agreed that this was one of the best action comedies we have seen in a while, and was glad he sat down to watch it with me.  Make sure you watch the “Back to School” Featurette, which shows how this hit movie came together.  You wouldn't think that Channing Tatum would be great in a comedic role, as he has been seen recently in dramas, like The Vow.  But, when you see him and Johan Hill together, it works.  They have great chemistry, that makes their characters believable, and will have you in stitches by the end of the movie.

I don't want to spoil the ending, but there are some unexpected cameos that will have you take notice.  Even though I wasn't able to see Magic Mike, this movie was a great stand in, and will be one that we will be watching again.  This is one movie I hope they do a sequel to.

Disclosure:  I was sent a copy of this DVD from the vendor in order to write up an honest review.  The views above are mine and mine alone.
