SUPER WHY! AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE KICKS OFF PBS KIDS SUMMER LEARNING INITIATIVE THIS JUNE

PBS Distribution today announced the upcoming release of “SUPER WHY: AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE” on DVD. SUPER WHY is a breakthrough preschool series from Out of the Blue Enterprises designed to help kids ages 3 to 6 with the critical skills they need to learn to read, as recommended by the National Reading Panel (alphabet, word families, spelling, comprehension and vocabulary). The standout, imagination-stimulating series focuses on the adventures of four fairytale friends who transform into reading-powered superheroes. The special DVD compilation is the first to feature Woofster, the new book-loving puppy pal with Dictionary Power, who made his tail-wagging debut on the popular series in fall 2011. The new title also features two episodes, “Around the World Adventure” and “Naila and the Magic Map,” which will premiere during the special “SUPER WHY Around the World Adventure” on-air event, June 15 on PBS KIDS. The “AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE” DVD debuts June 19, 2012.

In addition to its trio of fun- and learning-packed episodes, the “SUPER WHY: AROUND THE WORLD ADVENTURE” DVD features bonus materials, including interactive games, music videos, printable activity and coloring pages, as well as valuable resources for parents to use with their budding super readers at home. The new DVD includes:
Around the World Adventure – With the help of their teacher, Whyatt and his friends contact a girl from another school over the computer, but they wonder where she lives. The Super Readers along with Woofster take a trip around the world with a wacky explorer named Wobblebottom, who is on the hunt for his friend Sophie. Will they be able to help Wobblebottom find his friend, or will they be destined to “Wobble” around the globe indefinitely?
Educational Objectives – Preschoolers learn about geography; use the alphabet to identify the letters R, O, P, E; practice spelling; and discover the meaning of the word “quicksand.”
Naila and the Magic Map – Pig and his friends are playing when they find what looks like an Egyptian treasure map. But they can't make out the symbols! To search for answers, the Super Readers and their canine companion soar into the book, “Naila and the Magic Map,” to explore the world of ancient Egypt. Will they be able to help Naila unravel the mysterious code that unlocks the mystery of the treasure?
Educational Objectives – Young viewers learn about Egypt; use the alphabet; rhyme with ISH words; and discover the meaning of the word “sphinx.”
Jasper's Cowboy Wish Howdy Partner! Wyatt and his friends are playing cowboys, but Pig can't join in because he doesn't know what cowboys do. The Super Readers and Woofster jump into the tale, “Jasper's Cowboy Wish,” and make the acquaintance of a cowpoke named Jasper who's desperate to become a rompin' stompin' cowboy, if only he could get the hang of it. When Jasper must use his cowboy skills to save the day, will he become a hero...or will this be his last roundup?
Educational Objectives – Preschoolers explore the Old West; sing the alphabet; practice the magic of spelling; and learn the meaning of the word “saddle.”

My Thoughts:

I was sent an advance copy of the SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure which will premiere on June 15th on PBS, and then made available for purchase on DVD on June 19th.  Savannah is a huge Super Why! fan and has learned many of her new words and the alphabet by this animated series.  This is one of the few shows that I as a parent find engaging, educational and fun to watch, and enjoy sitting down with Savannah daily to tune and watch it with her.  I love watching her get excited when Wyatt and his friends jump into the storybooks in order to solve problems that they have.  Then, once they have all the "Super Letters" they make a word that describes how to rectify a problem they are having.  This show teaches young children important lessons, like sharing, friendship, teamwork, in a fun and educational way.  This is one of the few shows that Savannah sits through, without getting distracted.

We have been seeing previews for SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure when we tune into her PBS shows, and have been counting down the days until June 15th, when it is to premiere on PBS.  But, I surprised Savannah yesterday with an advanced copy. You should have seen her eyes light up when I handed her the DVD.  And, as a treat, we watched the two new episodes while her sister took a nap.  As we snuggled together on the couch, Savannah couldn't wait to see what adventures the SUPER WHY! Super Readers go on.

It was hard to choose a favorite between the three episodes, as they were all so entertaining.  We loved the new character, Wobblebottom, who took them on an adventure around the world.  It is always nice to see new characters, like Woofster the dog, that they included recently, and who is included in the third cowboy-themed episode on this new DVD, Jasper's Cowboy Wish.  Savannah loved the second episode which had the Super Readers trying to figure out a special code that will unlock a treasure.  Halfway through the episode, Savannah got off the couch and sat on her chair near the television, as she was really getting into the episode and wanted to see if they were going to find the treasure.

Even though we have seen the advance screening of these episodes, they are so enjoyable to watch, that we will tune in again on June 15th, as well as watch on her PBS Kids iPad app.  If your child is a fan of SUPER WHY!, make sure you mark your calendars, and catch these two new episodes.  Then, head back here and let me know what you thought of them.
