Easter Gift Giving Guide -- The Chocolate Turtle Basket from Phillips Candy House (Review)

A chocolate turtle basket filled with one pound of assorted turtles, a milk chocolate foiled rabbit and foiled eggs ($48.50)

Don't settle for a simple Easter basket filled with candy this holiday?  Instead, why not consider surprising your child or that special someone with a Chocolate Easter Turtle Basket from Phillips Candy House?  I was recently sent this basket to review and include in my Easter Gift Giving Guide, and can't stop raving about this basket.

First off, the basket comes packages in a clear cello page, with a multi-colored ribbon as a tie at the top.  So, as I was pulling this beautiful, edible Easter basket out of the box, I could peer in and see all the chocolate turtles and pastel foiled chocolates, in addition to the large golden foiled rabbit that sat in the center (and guarded the chocolate treats).  At first, I didn't want to even open the bag, as it looks so nice and worth displaying.  But, I was eager to try this chocolate, as Phillips Chocolates has been around since 1925, and is known as Boston's oldest chocolatier.  I was born in Boston, and have family in the surrounding area, but never knew of Phillips, until I stumbled upon their website this past February, looking for sweet treats for Valentine's Day.

When I finally opened and took the basket out, I was surprised at how heavy it was. I was curious to see if the handmade edible milk chocolate basket, drizzled with white chocolate, was completely filled, or if here was filler in the basket, making it look like you got a lot chocolate turtles.  I needed a cereal bowl to place at the milk and dark chocolate turtles in, as, indeed these sweet treats filled the entire Easter basket.  And, you know the Easter bunny you see in the center of the basket, well, that was solid milk chocolate.  Yum!

I enlisted my husband, daughter and parents who had come to visit, to help me sample the chocolate turtles, Easter bunny and basket.  Even though we pigged out on it over the weekend, I still have some of the edible Easter basket left to enjoy.  Having never tried Phillips Chocolates, I didn't know what to expect.  And, after coming off of sampling various chocolates this past February, they had some tall shoes to fill in regards to overall taste and appeal.  How did they compare you ask?  This chocolate was amazing!!!  Each piece was so rich and creamy.  And, the assortment of nuts used in the turtles were whole nuts (not crumbled nuts like others I have tried).  Savannah loved eating the Easter bunny.  I don't know why, but she chose to eat the bunny's head first. :-)  Because it was solid chocolate, she enlisted the help of my father to help her break apart and enjoy the remaining Easter bunny.  She enjoyed this chocolate so much, that she ended up with a chocolate beard.

As for the rest of us, we were impressed with the overall appearance and taste of the milk, dark and white chocolate.  We could tell that time and effort was put into handcrafting the Easter basket and making each individual chocolate turtle.  My husband is a huge dark chocolate lover, and said this is the best he has tried in a long time.  And, my father, who enjoys white chocolate, said the same.  For now on, I know where I will be shopping for handmade chocolates -- Phillips Candy House.  If you love chocolate just as much as I do, then you need to check them out to.  They offer beautiful gift baskets and a large assortment of handmade chocolates.  Be warned -- just looking at the photos on their website will make your mouth water!
