My Thoughts:
I was recently sent two pasta sauces from the La Famiglia DelGrosso product line, Uncle Joe’s Vodka Celebration and Uncle Jim’s Late Night Puttanesca. Being Italian, I grew with having 1-2 pasta dishes a week, and often times my mother would make homemade sauce, which was out of this world. But, as we got older and she returned back to work, she was limited with time, so instead of homemade sauce, she would use pasta sauce from the jar. Now, if you don’t make homemade sauce and only use jarred pasta sauce, you don’t know what you are missing. I especially loved her basil sauce, where she would use fresh basil – which smells suburb, and then would add garden vegetables, depending on the season. So, when you spooned this deliciously, thick sauce over your spaghetti, and took a bite, you not only would taste the fresh basil, but would also get chunks of pepper, zucchini and more. Ahh, the good ‘ole days!
Now that I am a mother, I am trying to recreate some of those childhood memories which have lasted with me through the years. So, every Sunday I make sure that we have a pasta dish – let is be raviolis, lasagna, manicottis, etc. Usually, we will buy the raviolis, but I make the lasagna and manicottis from scratch. And, for the sauce, if I have time, I will make my mother’s homemade sauce, but usually I resort to jarred sauce (seeing that we have 2 girls under the age of 2), as I don’t have enough time to spend in the kitchen. When it comes to jarred pasta sauces, you really have to sample a variety of brands to find ones that actually taste good. Many that I have tried over the years are either watered down or lack taste. There are only 1-2 brands that are my “go to” brands, as they taste as close to homemade as you can get.
But, now, I can add another brand to my arsenal of jarred pasta sauces – La Famiglia DelGrosso. Since receiving the two pasta sauce samples, I have now begun using this brand with my pasta dishes. I especially love how they use real plum tomatoes, as well as add chock full of mushrooms, olives, capers, onions, etc., depending on sauce flavor. And, when I went to the local market and saw that they carry this brand, I was so excited. We have tried a total of 4 flavors from this brand and love each one. They offer a variety of flavors that will tempt everyone’s palette. I can’t wait to try additional flavors from La Famiglia DelGrosso in the future. And, for Christmas this year, I will be giving my mother a gift basket full of La Famiglia DelGrosso pasta sauces. Yes, it isn’t homemade, but it is as close as you can get to my mom’s homemade sauce.
