The Joy of Green Cleaning by Leslie Reichert Review and Giveaway

CLOSED

And the winner is...

Congrats to: Christina F.

I had the opportunity to review a copy of The Joy of Green Cleaning by Leslie Reichert over the weekend, and boy did I learn a lot of great cleaning tips.  With a new daughter at home and being a cancer survivor, I am wary of many of the cleaning products on the market.  I don't want to expose my family to unnecessary and harmful toxins, if there is a greener cleaning product out there.  Leslie's book is a collection of over 70 DIY cleaning recipes, that help moms like me learn how to make greener cleaning supplies at home, that actually work.

Leslie Reichert, "The Cleaning Coach", is a nationally-recognized green homekeeping expert dedicated to educating people on keeping their homes, schools and work areas "green". From obvious dangers like toxic chemicals under the sink to hidden hazards that can be found in the office, Leslie helps teach simple steps to keeping families and pets safe from hidden toxins and health risks.

The first recipe I tried out was the All-Purpose Liquid cleaner, which can be used on counter tops and floors. It was easy to prepare and I had all ingredients laying around the house.  That is what is great about this book, you don't have to spend a lot of money to make safer cleaning products, and usually you will have most of the needed ingredients in your pantry. I was especially happy to see a section on nursery care.  Having a newborn at home, I have been buying expensive cleaners that are supposed to be healthier and less toxic.  But, now I can save money by making my own products at home.  I made the high chair cleaner, the baby toy cleaner and the baby tub cleaner.  I estimate that I saved over $30 dollars just by making these DIY products at home.

Other DIY recipes I tried included:

Daily Counter Cleaner
Green Powder Scrub -- similar to Ajax
Tub and Tile Scrub
Bathroom Powder Scrubber
Toilet Bowl Powder
Foamy Drain Cleaner
Hardwood Floor Cleaner

The Joy of Green Cleaning is broken down into these sections, so you will find a recipe for just about every area and surface in your house:

Daily Kitchen Cleaners
Metal Cleaners
Bathroom Cleaners
Floor Cleaners
Furniture Care
Laundry Care
Nursery Care
Other Green Ideas
Resources and Information

I have to say, the products I created above worked better than other cleaners I paid top dollar for at the supermarket.  And, they didn't leave a strong chemical smell.  I always hated cleaning our hardwood floors --which are throughout the entire house -- because I would either have to open the windows and let the house air out, or go downstairs for a few hours until the smell was gone.  Now, I can quickly whip up a bottle of cleaner, clean the floors, and walk around the area right after I was done.  And, the floor looks clean, without a waxy buildup or spotting.

If you want to experience a better way of cleaning your house, while helping the environment, why not buy a copy of Leslie's book today.  The book is available in .pdf form, or can be bought as a hard copy.  And, as an added bonus, Leslie is offering my readers $5 off anything on her site, including the e-book and hard copy version.  All you have to do is use the coupon code "5off" at checkout.  So, what are you waiting for? Head on over to Leslie's site today and enjoy the savings.

  17. I would love to get this book for my niece. She is quite the "green" girl, and is newly pregnant. She had pretty bad allergies and asthma as a child, so I think she would love to try natural cleaning solutions around the baby (when she/he gets here)

  24. The BBC show How Clean Is Your House got me interested in green cleaning back in 2008; in fact, one of my first blog posts was about the show. I think the book will be a great reference guide with many new tips for greener, cleaner living.
