Spotlight on Mom: Monique and Holly, Creators of Bumbalooza Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, GMO-Free Baking Mixes

"With today’s busy lifestyles, it’s difficult to balance nutrition and taste while managing allergies and sensitivities. But, with celiac disease and our increasing consumption with chemically-modified ingredients, it’s no wonder the world of food allergies seems to have exploded open. And, even those of us without allergies are choosing food with integrity to prevent ailments and promote good health.

All of the Bumbalooza™ products use all-natural ingredients, as many whole grains as possible, and less-fined sugars. The mixes have been hand-crated with care. We use dedicated equipment and gluten-free testing to ensure the products not only taste great, but also are safe to consume."

I have shared in the past about how my youngest has tummy troubles and vomits for days at a time.  She underwent surgery at Christmas only to have the results come back with an inflammation in her esophagus...but, no known direct cause.  We have tried a dairy free, soy free and other dietary restrictions to see if we could rule out a food allergy. I am still not sure why they just wouldn't do allergy testing with a blood draw, as it would have been so much easier than trying to take away milk from a toddler's diet, when they are used to this and drink it to fall asleep.  Those were a rough couple of weeks during this no-milk trial, only to find out milk wasn't an issue.

But, one thing I have tried hard to do is offer Gluten-free products to Bella, as things seems to work and she doesn't get sick after eating this type of food.  Because of my desire to offer Gluten-free snacks and treats to the girls, my online search led me to the Bumbalooza mixes, which were created by two moms.  Wanting to support fellow mom entrepreneurs, I reached out to Holly and Monique and asked if they would like to be spotlighted.  Not only did they want to be spotlighted, but they also sent me a few samples of their
Gluten-Free, Nut-Free, GMO-Free Baking Mixes to try out.

These are just a handful of the mixes available for purchase from the Bumbalooza online store...

I was recently sent all by the sugar cookie mix shown above to review, and will be sharing a honest and thorough review with photos on Friday, along with a giveaway, where one lucky reader will win a Three-pack of Bumbalooza mixes to try out at home with their children.

But, in the meantime, please enjoy my Spotlight on Mom interview with Monique and Holly of Bumbalooza.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.

Monique has an 8 and 10 year old;

Holly has a 5 year old.

Two moms living in Charlotte, NC trying to raise healthy little people.

Hobbies?  Baking, traveling, skiing/snowboarding and Pilates.

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?

Bumbalooza isgluten-free, nut-free, GMO-free baking mix company based in Charlotte, NC.  We are creating opportunities for families to bake, learn, and bond - even when food allergies are involved.  Started by two moms, trying to make a difference.  After years of struggling with cancer, food allergies, and other ailments, we found ourselves surrounded with the need to figure out cleaner eating -- eliminating gluten, GMOs, and overly processed food.  When we couldn't find anything decent on the market, we took matters into our own hands and Bumbalooza was born.  And, now, we are Bringing the Buzz Back Into Baking!

What is a typical work day like?

Long!  We are fortunate to have a great team (our 'Bee-f-fs) that is running a million miles an hour.  We launched just over six months ago and have been growing like crazy.  Over 150 stores and 9000 customers in the first six months!  A typical day includes fielding questions, shipping products, making products, and working with new and existing customers.

What has been a struggle while starting up your company?

So much.  It's tough to start a business.  Especially a business that people want to root for.  We aren't taking short cuts and are trying to do things the right way.  And, that's almost never the easiest way.  Our products are made by people, not machines, to maintain the highest quality.    :)  But, establishing a manufacturing facility while in the middle of crazy growth has proven to be a challenge....We are lucky to have such a strong team pushing hard and are ready for our next big challenge.

What did you do in your past work life?

Holly -- corporate America marketing.  Monique - medical field and sales.

What have been some of your major successes?

Fast growth -- we've had buyers from major grocery chains call us which is incredible.  But, it's not only winning the new business, it's seeing how customers are responding.  Almost every event we are at, our booth is the busiest.  In stores, when customers taste, they buy (even when they aren't gluten-free).  The largest success so far, though, is seeing how excited our little ones are to be part of this.  They are so proud, it's sweet to see.

What have been some of your major challenges?

Getting the word out.  Once people try us, they're hooked:)  But, it's tough for the little guys to break through all of the noise in the market.

On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?

Our families and knowing that what we are doing starts and ends with them.  We know we are doing good things -- we hear it in every personal story at events and see it in every repeat customers.

What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?

As with anything, it's about boundaries.  Making sure that our families always come first.  But, it's also about practicing what we preach.  We are all about creating learning moments for our kids.  And, we pull them into the business (where it makes sense) for those moments.  Great example, we are hosting a class field trip to our facility (one of our kid's classes).

What is next for your business?

More growth.  We are excited and ready.

Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?

It's not for the faint-hearted.  There is a reason they say it is blood, sweat, and tears:)  But, it's worth every second of it when you believe in what you are doing.  If you are a company that people want to root for, you will be successful.

Holiday Gift Ideas -- GFreely -- Discover the Best in Gluten Free - A Monthly Subscription Box (Review)

gfreely

Gluten Free Snacks

"Living a gluten free lifestyle doesn’t have to be difficult. We think it can be made simple. By helping you discover and purchase delicious gluten free products, the gluten free diet can be one that you will enjoy. Our passion is to inject the excitement our team has into your daily food options. Never again should you hesitate choosing suitable foods to fit your lifestyle!

We understand how overwhelming and difficult the gluten free lifestyle can be, it's our diet too. Dan Schiffman and Louisa Rasmussen, RD started GFreely to help those living with the same dietary restrictions adhere to a gluten free diet. We love great food and enjoy finding the tastiest gluten free options and sharing them with you!"

----

My Thoughts:

Do you or someone you know suffer from a gluten allergy?  If so, then I have just the right gift idea that will make your day -- GFreely is amwonderful monthly subscription service that sends along a box of samples each month with designed for those with gluten allergies in mind.  If you have to live a gluten-free lifestyle, then you know how tough it is to finds products to incorporate into your diet that meet your dietary needs.  But, what about snacks?  Good luck in finding great tasting, gluten-free snacks that actually taste good.  I know a handful of people who can no longer tolerate gluten in their diets, and struggle daily to find foods that are tasty and good for them to eat.  Time after time they would tell me how difficult it is to not be able to find snack foods like popcorn and snack bars that they can eat.  And, with a background in health education, they always ask if I have heard about products made especially for them.  So, I continue to scour the Internet and read health and wellness magazines, to not only share new products with them, but also to buy some of these gluten-free snacks to have in the pantry for when they come to visit.  I hate not being able to offer everyone tasty treats because of dietary restrictions.  If you come to visit, I will have gluten-free foods, diabetic foods, low cholesterol and low sodium foods on hand just for you. :-)

I can't tell you how excited I was when I stumbled across GFreely back in October.  While others were finishing up the month celebrating Halloween, I was gearing up for my holiday gift guide, as well as starting to put together my holiday shopping list for family and friends.  I noticed that this year in particular monthly subscription boxes have become popular -- from makeup boxes, to fitness boxes, to kids' arts and crafts boxes, there was a subscription box for just about everyone, including those with gluten allergies.  I couldn't believe it, and had to reach out to the folks at GFreely and try their monthly subscription box.  They were kind enough to send me their October box, which was filled with 9 tasty gluten free options.  Just look at what I got:

Unlike other subscription snack boxes I have ordered or reviewed, this one was jam packed with goodies that one would actually eat and not throw away.  It was hard to choose favorites from this box, as they were all so good.  Some standouts, however, was Healthy Pantry's Cranberry Wild Rice, which I ended up making and serving at Thanksgiving for those joining us for dinner with gluten allergies.  Everyone, even those without gluten allergies, tried the rice and loved it.  I had just wished I had bought more, as this was enjoyed more than the mashed potatoes and other sides.  With Halloween in October, you can't help but want to pick up snacks.  But, what can you enjoy that is gluten -free?  Well, why not try Surf Sweets' organic gummy bears or jelly beans?  I had reviewed this brand in the past, and absolutely love their sweet treats.  They taste so good, you can't help but choose these over other snacks on the market.  Another standout was Kay's Naturals Apple Cinnamon Cereal.  I ended up added fresh sliced apples which we had picked at the local orchard to this breakfast cereal.  Mmm, was it good.  Like so many other samples which were included in these and past GFreely boxes, I have gone ahead and picked up full size versions to not only keep on hand for guests, but also enjoy myself.

So, if you are looking for a unique gift for those with gluten allergies, why not surprise them with a GFreely subscription this holiday season?  They will thank you for helping them find treats that can actually enjoy, once and for all. :-)

We promise they’ll make you smile inside out!  Read on to see what I though of their granola and semi-sweet baking chocolate.

Brown Rice Flakes, Chocolate Chips (Evaporated Cane Juice, Natural Chocolate Liquor (Non-Alcoholic), Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter), Evaporated Cane Juice, Brown Rice Syrup, Rice Bran, Rice Crisps (Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Raisin Juice Concentrate, Honey, Salt), Natural Process Cocoa Powder, Inulin (Chicory Root Fiber), Ground Flaxseed, Natural Chocolate Flavor, Honey, Vanilla, Expeller-Pressed Vegetable Oil (Safflower Oil and/or Sunflower Oil), Salt, Rosemary Extract

Vitamins & Minerals -- Vitamins and Minerals: Magnesium, Iron, Niacin (Vitamin B3), Zinc, Thiamin (Vitamin B1), Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Folate, Vitamin B6

My Thoughts:

What a great pairing of two of my favorite things -- granola and chocolate.  Prior to my review of Enjoy Life products, I had only seen them on store shelves, and never tried them.  So, when I was sent this granola and their baking chocolate, I couldn't wait to try them out.  Unlike most granola on the market, this granola is gluten and nut free, which is great as I developed a gluten allergy a few years back and have had to adjust my diet accordingly.

Upon receiving this sample, I first looked at the granola through the window of the bag.  I was impressed with how the granola was in small clusters and contained mini chocolate chips.  I couldn't wait to open the bag and try this double chocolate crunch granola for myself.  Unlike my husband, I enjoy my granola as a snack, and can eat it with or without milk.  When I find myself in a rush with the girls during the day time, and have limited time for lunch, I continually grab handful of granola to eat and keep my energy up.  And, if it has chocolate in it --even better.

So, on a day, when the girls were not taking their noon-time nap (usually when I put a load of laundry on and eat lunch), I ended up having to grab granola.  What better time to try out this new granola.  Not only was I hungry and dragging from a busy morning, but I was also craving something sweet.  Instead of grabbing unhealthy foods, which I try to limit in the house, I made a little cup of granola with milk.  Mmm, was it tasty.  You wouldn't think you were eating something healthy, as you enjoyed the rice crisps and chocolate chips.  I devoured this cup in minutes, and ended up hanging another, as it was so good.  This time, I tried it dry, which was also good.  But, if I had to choose a way to eat this granola, I would say to have it with chilled milk.  The chocolate melts into the milk, forming a tasty chocolate milk, that can be enjoyed after you finish eating the crunchy granola flakes.

In a matter of days, this bag of granola from Enjoy Life was gone.  My husband found himself having a bowl in the AM, and filling a plastic bag with some, to bring to work as a snack, while I would pick on it throughout the day.  I can't wait to try the other flavored granola from Enjoy Life, which includes cinnamon raisin crunch and very berry munch.

Make your own blondies with our Semi-Sweet Chocolate Mega Chunks that are dairy- , soy- and gluten-free!

Ingredients:  Evaporated Cane Juice, Natural Chocolate Liquor (Non-Alcoholic), Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter

Allergen Info:  MADE IN A DEDICATED NUT- AND GLUTEN-FREE FACILITY, GLUTEN-FREE, CASEIN-FREE, VEGAN, KOSHER

My Thoughts:

I used receiving this sample as an excuse to get in the kitchen and bake. With two young children at home, I haven't been able to bake like I used to.  So, whenever I get a chance to spend time in the kitchen, I take it, as I find baking therapeutic, as well as a joy!  I have never cooked with a dairy, but and soy free chocolate before, so I didn't know how the final product would taste, or if baking with this would be any different than if I had used regular chocolate.  I ended up making my Grandma's famous chocolate chunk cookies with these semi-sweet chunks.  The cookies cooked up just like they usually do, but this time, I found the taste to be much better.  The large chocolate chunks made the cookies more moist, adding to the flavor and overall texture of the cookies.  I ended up serving to the cookies after dinner, when I had my parents over, and by night's end, my batch of cookies were gone.  We all couldn't stop raving about them, as we went back for seconds, thirds, ...  I can't wait to try a few of the recipes from the Enjoy Life website, which use these chocolate mega chunks.

In the end, I am so glad I had the opportunity to try products from the Enjoy Life product line, as I now have a go-to granola that is not only healthy, but also does not cause me to have an allergic reaction.  You would think that products which are soy-, milk-, gluten-free, etc. would lack taste, but, on the contrary.  Both products that I sampled have an excellent taste, which made you want to eat more.
