Christmas Movie Advent Countdown Suggestions: DreamWorks Ultimate Holiday Collection on Blu-Ray (Review)

Disclosure:  I was sent a screener from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

(Also available on DVD for only $19.71)

If you weren't already aware...there are only 8 weeks left until Christmas.  I was just at Kohl's today and Santa was there ready to hear what the little ones want for Christmas and pose for photos, while parents took advantage of pre- Black Friday sales.  Yes, you read that right...many stores like this one are already doing holiday sales in advance of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Last month, a number of high end retailers announced that they would not open the day after Thanksgiving, and I wondered how they would plan to make revenue for the holidays.  Now I know...with all these early sales and promotions.  With all the sales going on and toy catalogs from different retailers arriving at our doorstep each day, it is hard not to get into the holiday spirit.  And,when my girls aren't circling what they want for Christmas from the advertisements, they are sitting and watching some of their favorite holiday movies, trying to decide which ones they want me to wrap and number for our annual Christmas Movie Advent.

If you are looking for a new, fun family holiday tradition to start with your family this year, why not consider doing a holiday movie advent? Just like with a book advent which we also do in our house, you choose your favorite holiday titles, in this case movies, and then wrap them in festive holiday wrap.  You can let your kids help choose the movies they want to count down to Christmas with, or do it yourself and have it be a surprise for the kids.  I usually have the girls choose 6 holiday movies and I choose the other 6 movies, usually adding in a few new Christmas-themed movies, before wrapping and numbering, and placing near the Christmas tree.  Then, each night, the girls take turns, taking a wrapped movie and unwrapping it, to see which movie we will be watching that evening, as we count down to Santa's arrival.

This year, I have have a handful of new releases I will be sharing with you all, that would make for great additions to your family's holiday movie advent countdown that you may already do or want to start this year.  The first movie, I want to share with you is from Dreamworks and is  could get your started with your advent as it contains 9 full-length movies all on on Blu-ray disc.  The Ultimate Holiday Collection, which released last month from Dreamworks contains the following 9 stories, sure to delight kids and adults of all ages, as they gear up for the holidays and Santa's arrival...

Featuring 9 DreamWorks holiday favorites together for the first time!
  • Trolls Holiday
  • Shrek the Halls
  • Donkey’s Caroling Christmas-tacular
  • Merry Madagascar
  • Penguins of Madagascar in a Christmas Caper
  • Dragons Holiday: Gift of the Night Fury
  • Home for the Holidays
  • Rise of the Guardians

My girls were so excited when they saw this Blu-ray arrive at our door last week, as they have already seen these holiday movies, and LOVE them all!  They were so excited to have all these great holiday movies all on one disc, as well as have some fun bonus content included Shrek's Yule Log, 12 days of Christmas Pop-Up Book, 4 Penguins Sing-Along Music Videos and so much more!

This past weekend, my girls started watching this Ultimate Holiday Collection, trying to decide in which order they will want to see these movies.  We got to talking about adding some days to the countdown and making it longer than 12 days.  When the holidays roll around, it becomes harder and harder to narrow down our list of Christmas movies to watch, as they are all so good, and worth watching.  So, you know what, we may just have to extend our movie countdown and begin Dec. 1st, or a little earlier. :-)

Read on to learn more about the new Dreamworks Ultimate Holiday Collection now available to own on Blu-ray or DVD, and featuring 9 great holiday movies.  This is definitely one DVD/Blu-ray you will want to pick to have on hand as you count down to Christmas this year, and for years to come.

My Thoughts:

Did you see Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Color movie when it aired on television back on November 30th?  I was so looking forward to the movie, but missed it as I had to tend to a family emergency and was out of state.  When I came home, I realized I forgot to record it.  Thankfully, I looked online and saw that this heartwarming holiday film would be arriving on DVD on Dec. 20th -- just in time to order and give as a last minute holiday gift, or to watch with family and friends who come to visit.

The other day I was sent an email from the folks at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment asking if I wanted to screen this movie.  I jumped at the opportunity as this would mean I wouldn't have to wait until the 20th to see the movie.  And, this evening, after the girls went to bed, I sat up with my husband and we watched this movie.  It was truly a remarkable movie and one that you will need tissues for.

Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors - Circle of Love is the sequel to last year's holiday movie, Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Color.  If you saw this heartwarming film, then you know just how good these movies from Dolly Parton are.  Not only is a talented musician, but she really knows how to tell a story (these two movies are based on her childhood) in a way that the viewer can relate, or is moved (usually to tears...happy tears that is).  This new holiday movie picks up where the last Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Color leaves off.  We get to see more of Dolly Parton's childhood, before she became the big star she is today.

This Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Color is made up of amazing cast, which includes Ricky Schroder and Jennifer Nettles as Dolly's parents.  Alyvia Alyn Lind reprises her role as young Dolly Parton.  As you watch this holiday movie you can't help but find yourself falling in love with the cast of characters chosen to play the Parton family.  They all work so well together, and you can relate to them, which makes the story more enjoyable.

In the last movie, young Dolly wanted a special coat, and in this movie she wants a sparkly pair of red shoes for Christmas.  Her mom Avie Lee saves up money for her egg sales, etc. so that she can buy each of her eight children the special gift they are asking for.  While in town pricing out the children's gifts, Robert Lee (Dolly's father) sees Avie Lee looking at a wedding ring and admiring it as if she was a child dreaming of the perfect Christmas gift.

The rest of the movie follows Dolly, her family and her siblings as they try to earn money to get Momma the ring she was eyeing...even if that means they go without their special gift.  But, you can't have a movie without a climatic scene. And, this movie is no exception.  Near the end of the movie, Dolly and her family are stranded in the family cabin without heat or food during a blizzard. Dolly's father is away working, and tries to make it back home before the family freezes to death -- a premonition Dolly's mom had in a dream.

You will find yourself on the edge of you seat as you watch this movie.  In the beginning you are hoping that Avie Lee is able to save up enough movie to get all the kids the gift they want for Christmas, and then you move to wishing she gets the wedding ring she was admiring at the store.  But, then your emotions will be played with as you watch the family huddling together in a circle of love inside their cold cabin.  Dolly's youngest sibling has a fever that will have praying breaks, and watching the family wish for a miracle, you can't help but wipe tears from your face.

Every holiday movie has to have a happy ending, and this one does, as Dolly's father makes it back to his family, and Momma gets her ring, as does Daddy.  Throughout this movie you will hear both the characters singing songs, as well as narrative from Dolly herself.  Dolly Parton also sings throughout, which makes this such an enjoyable holiday movie.

If I had to choose which of the two "Coat of Many Colors movies I liked the best, I would have to say that I liked this.  Both movies make you cry and really pull at your heartstrings, but this one really did a great job in sharing the struggles of Dolly's family when she was growing up, and the many life lessons learned through hardships.  I was drawn in from the opening scene where Dolly introduces the movie standing in front of Dollywood, right up until the end where we see Dolly and choir singing the theme song, to bring the story full circle.

Are you looking for a wonderful holiday movie to share with you r family this year and for years to come?  Then, you will definitely want to pick up a copy of this movie when it arrives on DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 20th.  This is one movie that my family will be enjoying again this holiday season, and for many more years to come.

My Thoughts:

One of my favorite things about Christmas, besides the lights, decorations and being able to spend time with family and friends who we don't see that often during the year, is getting to watch great family-friendly holiday movies with the girls.  When I was growing up, they didn't have television channels airing nightly holiday movies...oh, how I wished they did, as I would have been in heaven.  Instead, I would gather around the television with my brothers and parents Sunday nights to walk a Hallmark holiday movie, which my mom would always cry at.  During the week time, while waiting for these holiday shows to come on, my mom would play 1-2 movies we had recorded over the years on VHS.   :-)  I still have a handful of them to this day, including all the Claymation ones.

But, now years later, there are so many Christmas movies available for purchase, or airing nightly on television, starting as early as the day after Halloween.  So, I am able to get my holiday movie fix, while enjoying quiet time with the girls, all snuggled up on the couch. :-)  I wish you could see our growing holiday DVD collection, which the girls love to go and pick a movie from each day.  We started a tradition this year, where each night after dinner, the girls get to choose a holiday movie each to watch before bed.  Arabella is on a Barbie kick right now, so she oftentimes chooses the same holiday episode to watch.  When it comes to Savannah's choice, she loves waiting to see if new DVDs arrive in the mail, and will oftentimes ask to watch one of these.  So, recently, when I received a handful of Christmas movies from Cinedigm, Savannah was all smiles.  What movie to choose first, was her predictament.  She fell in love with the covers of each, especially The Hive one.  And, since receiving, I can report that we have watched all of the above DVDs a handful of times so far.

Usually my husband is good with watching a movie like this once, but he has fallen in love with these holiday movies, and will sit and watch them over and over again with us.   We have been making a point to watch an episode a night from The Secret World of Santa Claus DVD sets we received, as they allow you to countdown to Christmas, as you eagerly await for Santa to arrive.  Being a fan of holiday classics, I have to say that my favorite of all the DVDs sent to review was the Enchanted Tales: The Night Before Christmas one.  My father used to read this classic story to us on Christmas Eve before having to head to work.  It is one of my favorite holiday childhood memories.  And, each and every time I hear the story read or see a movie rendition of it, I can't help but smile.

If you are looking for wholesome family-friendly holiday movies to add to your families growing DVD collection, why not consider the above holiday titles from Cinedigm?  I know you and your family will enjoy watching them, just as much as we have...for year to come.
