Show Your Girl Power with Empowerment T-Shirts from Four Girls on A Mission - Perfect Holiday Gift to Give That Special Girl In Your Life (Review)

Disclosure:  I was sent samples from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Redefining and Expanding Girl Power, One T-Shirt at a Time.

For each item sold, $1 will be donated to causes supporting women.

Many people were celebrated the mid-term elections on Tuesday, especially in Massachusetts where Ayanna Pressley became Massachusetts' first black Congresswoman to represent Massachusetts in Congress.  This was one of many races my girls and I were watching, as well as the governor race in GA, as I have two young daughters, who I remind each day that they can do and be anything they want.  My girls are part Latina, and have my husband's tan skin.  They are getting older and starting to notice their differences from my white skin, and that of their friends, who are all different races.  And, as we learn about famous people in history they are seeing more and more how this world has been male driven for so long.

As we geared up for learning about the mid-elections and government, we studied the Constitution and branches of government.  The girls were quick to point out that in the books we were reading, there were no women mentioned.  And, when it came to drafting and then signing the Constitution Philadelphia, PA in 1787, only men were present and in charge of writing up the rules that would govern our country.  My girls saw this and wondered why all these years later, that there still hasn't been a woman president, and why women all over, especially those of color are celebrating milestones like more female African American woman to Congress, and maybe even the first African American governor in GA.

We now live in an age where people are finally standing up and saying that "women can do it to...maybe even better."  I am happy that there is a stronger push for the women's movement, and that women are stepping up and taking on roles that were once considered a "male" role.  This lets young girls, like my two daughters, see that they are not limited because of their gender, and now their ethnicity.  It is a great time to be a woman, and hopefully in a couple years, or at least in my life time we will see a woman president. :-)

In the meantime, my girls are showing their girl power with empowering t-shirts from Four Girls on a Mission, that we were recently sent to review.

I stumbled upon this amazing t-shirt company while looking for the perfect gift for my daughter's upcoming 7th birthday this weekend. She loves history and learning about historical figures.  Her passion for the past and learning about people who have made our world a better place, has introduced her to fascinating women like Jane Goodall, Susan B. Anthony, and Marie Curie.  So, when I saw that Four Girls on a Mission had a Marie Curie t-shirt, I had to get it for my daughter.

Not only was my purchase going to make one young feminist happy and proud to represent females all over the globe, but I was happy to see that $1 from each t-shirt sale goes to supporting women's causes.

So, it is a win-win when you shop Four Girls on a Mission and their empowering t-shirt line.

Feature Friday -- Reflect Who I Am Mirror Image Shirts for Girls and Women (Review and Giveaway)

What a crazy couple of weeks it has been in our house.  Last week the girls came down with the nasty stomach bug, and since then we have been passing it back and forth through the house.  And, on top of this, Arabella has been teething, so she hasn't been a happy camper, as she gets painful diaper rashes like Savannah did when teething.  I wasn't sure if I would get this Feature Friday up in time, but after seeing a post on Yahoo News! tonight about an anonymous message left in a bathroom stall in a university bathroom, I knew I had to share these amazing t-shirts with you.

Before I share my thoughts on the t-shirts I was sent for myself and my niece to review, here is more on the anonymous message I just spoke of, that you can find at Yahoo News.

"A Reddit user posted a photo of a poignant message that she found taped to the stall in a women's restroom at her university.

The user, chellylauren, wrote: "In a girls' bathroom stall at my university, girls have written about some of their most horrifying life experiences. This week, somebody replied."

The reply, written on notebook paper, is anonymous.

The reply in full:

To the girl who was raped: You are so strong. I cannot fathom the pain you must have gone through. The fact that you have the bravery to write it (even on a bathroom wall) gives me hope.

To the girl with eating disorders: I promise you, although I don't know you, you are beautiful, you deserve your health. You deserve freedom from that hell.

To the girl with the alcoholic father: I am so sorry for the agony it must cause. Again, such courage is remarkable you must be such a strong person to see such pain.

To the girl whose father died: Missing them never goes away. The ache of their absence never goes away. But the love they had, the memories you share surely must last. I am sure, out of the bottom of my heart, the people who have left you in this world are exceptionally proud of the person you are.

Everytime (sic) I see these walls, these confessions, I feel so blessed to know I have the priviledge (sic) of seeing them. Your moments, these secrets, are all precious even though they are sad. To all of you (including those I did not mention, and those who have not yet written)

    -You are worthy.

    -You are strong.

    -You are brave.

    -You are loved.

    -Somebody cares.

Written below that, somebody penned a quick response: "To the person who wrote this, thank you.""

This encouraging message from a total stranger really moved me, and reminded me that girls/women need to be reminded that they are loved, strong, beautiful, and worthy -- just like this girl shared in her letter.  When I first stumbled across Reflect Who I Am and learned about Tricia Price and Marci Hower's mission about encouraging young girls to love who they see in the mirror, I knew I had to share their story and t-shirts with you all.  I was excited when I reached out to them and they agreed to participate in my feature.  I had the opportunity to share their story with you this past Monday in my Spotlight on Mom feature.  If you missed my interview with the Tricia and Marci, click here to read it now -- http://www.inspiredbysavannah.com/2013/01/spotlight-on-moms-tricia-price-and.html.

As young girls get older, they begin to develop self identity issues and oftentimes question their beauty -- both on the inside and out.  I remember hitting puberty and struggling with the changes I was feeling on the inside, as well as on the outside.  I was not alone, as most of my girlfriends also struggled with self esteem issues.  Can you remember back to your middle school and high school years? Do you remember a group of girls who always seemed to make all the other girls feel inferior?  Did you wonder how girls can be so cruel to one another?  I remember my mother would tell me that they were just acting this way because they were self-conscious, or that they may have had issues they were trying to cover up at home.  But, as a tween/teen, I couldn't see or understand what she was saying.  All I knew was how bad these girls would make my friends and I feel about ourselves.  We would question our looks, our intelligence -- pretty much everything about ourselves.  I think this is why so many girls say that they would not want to relive their middle and high school years.  Many girls, including myself, couldn't wait to graduate and go to college.  We thought that a new school and new friends would bring positive changes -- but, when we arrived at college, we realized that it was the same story, just a different school.  It wasn't until we really took a good look in the mirror and began to love who we saw that we could grow into our own identities and be ready to take on the world.  And, now that I have two young daughters, and 2 nieces, I hope they will feel comfortable coming to me and talking about self esteem issues they experience, as they get older.  We all go through this awkward stage, but if they know that they are loved and how special they are, maybe their journey to find their identities will be a little easier than ours were.

Thanks to Tricia and Marci's brilliant idea to create a line of t-shirts for girls and women to inspire and empower them to love who they see when they stare in the mirror, these t-shirts can act as a reminder to let girls everywhere know how special they are.  Girls and women should embrace their unique individuality and not feel self conscious about themselves.  When I shared the "I am Loved" t-shirt with my niece, her eyes lit up.  I had her put the shirt on and then took her to the bathroom to look in the mirror.  When I asked her to read what the shirt said, she was hesitant at first, but then said, "I am Loved."  I turned her around to face me and told her that she was, and how beautiful she was both inside and out, and not to doubt it for one minute, even if someone else (boy or girl) tells her otherwise.

Youth “I am Loved” T-Shirt

My niece is just starting to deal with peer pressure and self esteem issues, but my hope that by reminding her that she is perfect the way she is and loved by many, will make her stronger and be able to believe it when she looks in the mirror each day.  Now, I know that these are just t-shirts, but the unique message each has printed on the front in a cool mirror image design, is eye catching and makes the person wearing it take a double take when they pass by a mirror, as well as those on the street seeing it for the first time.  Each t-shirt in the Reflect Who I Am collection is truly inspiring and will act as a reminder for girls/women everywhere about how special they are.  Remember, it is not until you love yourself, that you can be loved by others.

I was sent their "I am Beautiful" t-shirt to review, and love it!  It is not only comfortable to wear, but is a great conversation starter.

beautiful-tile-adult

So, if you have a young daughter who would benefit from a self esteem and confidence boost, why not pick them up one of t-shirts Marci and Tricia created as part of their Reflect Who I Am line?  If you have been looking for a way to talk to your daughter about self esteem issues, these shirts can be used as an ice breaker.  I found that by giving the t-shirt to my niece, that she was able to open up more about the pressures she was feeling in school, and how she struggled to fit in, as the other girls seemed to be more popular, prettier or happier than she was.  She has since told me how other girlfriends have complimented her on her Reflect Who I Am t-shirt when she wore it to school, and how she felt more confident when she wore it.  Hats off to Tricia and Marci for creating these t-shirts and for encouraging girls/women everywhere to love who they are.

Spotlight on Moms: Tricia Price and Marci Hower of Reflect Who I Am

I first stumbled across Reflect Who I Am while looking for unique Valentine's Day gift ideas for my upcoming gift guide, which will run from 2/1-2/10.  And, like I do with all online stores I stumble upon, I like to check out the company's background and learn about the owners.  This is when I found out that two moms were behind this amazing company.  And, when I read their mission statement, I knew I had to reach out and see if they would share this story with you all.

You will learn in the interview that both Tricia Price and Marci Hower, the moms behind Reflect Who I Am, have a background in marketing.  So, you would expect them to articulate this story well -- and, that they do.  So, instead of me trying to sum up the reason for creating these amazing and empowering mirror image shirts for girls and women, I wanted to share their mission statement, which you can find on their website:

"Our lives are filled with an infinite array of possibilities. What we choose to see becomes our experience. Whatever we focus on will grow. Reflect Who I Am wants to remind girls everywhere that they are who they see in the mirror. They reflect the beauty, the courage and the brilliance that is within them. We do not only want to inspire girls, but awaken them to their true self.

Reflect Who I Am was created by Tricia Price and Marci Hower, parents wanting to let girls everywhere know they are that amazing person in the mirror, regardless of what others may think or say about them.

Our Inspiration

From the time our girls are born we tell them how smart they are, how beautiful they are, how brave they are, and how they can achieve anything they want. We protect them the best we can, but as they get older the world starts chipping away at their self esteem. A teacher tells her she isn’t smart enough, a boy tells her she isn’t pretty enough, a coach tells her she’s not good enough and she begins to doubt the girl she sees in the mirror every day.   No child should feel there is no hope or be limited by the negative influences of others.

The founders of Reflect Who I Am want to give girls everywhere a daily reminder of just how special they are. Reflect Who I Am t-shirts were created to cultivate and cherish, to express and expand, and to discover and design their true selves. They live in the world they create.  We want girls to deliberately look for their inherent strengths, gifts, and positive possibilities in each of them."

Now, if the above doesn't move you and make you want to rush over to the Reflect Who I Am website and buy a shirt for that girl in your life (daughter, step-daughter, niece, god-daughter, etc.), or for yourself, then I hope after you enjoy their inspiring story about their 1 year old business, you will stop on by and show your support for these amazing moms.  And, when you are done, make sure you share their story and products with other moms with daughters (especially those with tweens and teens), as these shirts are a great way to encourage girls to love themselves, while helping to boost their self-esteem. :-)

And, make sure you head back here on Friday, when I will share my review on their shirts (for both girls and women), as well as offer one lucky reader a chance to win this beautiful "I Am Loved" Reflect Who I Am youth t-shirt for that special girl in their life  -- would make for a great Valentine's Day gift. Hint, hint!!!! (Note: I will also be sharing a promo code for FREE SHIPPING, too) :-)

But, in the meantime, please enjoy my Spotlight on Mom interview with Tricia Price and Marci Hower, of Reflect Who I Am.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.  How many children do you have?  What are their ages? Your hobbies? Etc.

Tricia Price and Marci Hower are co-founders of Reflect Who I Am. Tricia is the mother of a son and two girls ages 13, 11 and 6. You can often find Tricia cheering in the bleachers at a youth sporting event, giving standing ovations at the local theatre or enjoying an evening at a school music recital.
Marci does not have any daughters in her household, but as a mother of three fabulous sons ages 12, 11, 8 it is a safe bet that there will be some product lines for boys in the Reflect Who I Am future. Marci likes entertaining, she always seems ready to host a houseful of people.

Briefly explain your business.  How did it come about?
Reflect Who I Am creates and sells original mirror image shirts for girls. These shirts are designed to encourage girls to celebrate who they are and boost their self esteem. We want girls everywhere to love who she sees in mirror. The shirts are sold exclusively through www.reflectwhoiam.com.

Tricia first thought of the reflective imagery when she wanted to help her daughter build up her self-esteem and confidence. Tricia wanted to remind her every time she looked in the mirror that she was beautiful -- both inside and out. This great idea was so strong, we wanted to share it with all girls struggling with their identities, and that is when Tricia partnered with Marci to help bring the business to reality.
What is a typical workday like?
In a word… Interrupted. Working from our homes, we have a lot of interruptions.
Luckily we are connected both online and with the same mission. We often work off hours or when the kids are at school. We are constantly writing, folding, packing, posting, tweeting, and mailing. It is the passion we have for our mission that drives us.
What has been a struggle while starting up your company?
Creating awareness that our company even exists. That is why we are so grateful to Robin for reaching out to us. It is people like her that care about our mission, and help us grow. Like us on Facebook, and help us extend our reach further.
What did you do in your past work life?
We have worked, played and collaborated together for over a decade. Marci has been in the marketing business for over 20 years. Her last position was as the VP of Interactive Marketing at a direct marketing firm before sprouting her own wings with start-up ventures.
Tricia has worked as an online marketing specialist in the Cleveland area for nearly 15 years. She specialized mostly in Search Engine Marketing, but recently has added Social Media Marketing to the mix. Throughout the years she’s worn many hats in the workplace and is definitely a Jack-of-all-trades when it comes to marketing.
What have been some of your major successes?
Every success is a major success for us, especially because we are a start-up. Our web site launch, our first order, our first press release, our first Facebook like, our first re-tweet, our newest product launch, getting Robin’s email.
It’s nice to take a moment and breath in all of the things to be thankful for when you are moving so fast.
What have been some of your major challenges?
We believe strongly in our product and mission and we are excellent marketers. However, at the core of our business are t-shirts, and we knew very little about the apparel business. It has been a learning curve for us, but now we know all about sizing variations, thread counts and ink saturations. Our product line’s high quality is a testament to that knowledge.
On those impossible days, what motivates you to keep going?
Having a business partner has been incredible. When one is having a brain freeze, the other seems to be on a roll. When one needs a break, the other has the extra time. When one sees the glass half empty, the other sees it half full. We have balanced each other well.
And if we didn’t have a passion to inspire girls to see the beauty, the courage and the brilliance that is within them, we wouldn’t be inspired to spend so many hours working. It doesn’t feel like work, it feels like life.
What is your balancing secret in managing a business and family?
Our secret?... No matter what, family comes first.
(It also helps that both of our husbands are our biggest advocates.)
What is next for your business?
We will expand to other products that align with our mission, and maybe even include a line of shirts for boys ;-)
We also offer many activities on our site, that parents can do with their daughters to help boost self-esteem. We have gotten great feedback and encouragement to develop curriculum that will be available online for groups such as girl scouts, schools, and churches.
Do you have any advice for other mom entrepreneurs that are starting out and struggling, or are on the fence about starting a business?
Follow your passion. If you create from the heart, inspiration and money will follow.
