Trusted Media Brands, Inc. Taste of Home

I can thank my Nana for introducing me to the kitchen and getting me excited about cooking and baking.  She was Italian and food was a front and center whenever we visited her.  "Mangia, Mangia" she would tell us, which means, eat eat.  And, if she didn't eat, she would get upset as she put her heart and soul into everything that she made and she wanted everyone to leave with happy, full bellies.  When I was old enough to cook with the stove and oven, she began sharing family recipes that were passed down to her from her mother and grandmother.  She also introduced me to Julia Child, who she loved watching on PBS.  If we were visiting when Julia was on, we had to stay quiet as she would watch her cooking show religiously with pen and paper in hand, jotting down recipes to try out in her own kitchen and to take some ideas to incorporate into dishes she liked to make.

Before my Nana was moved into a nursing home, she gave me a handful of her favorite cookbooks, including one of her Julia Child's cookbook.  I was intrigued by this cookbook as it was all about trying out a new recipe every day for an entire year.  I remember my Nana telling me how she would have loved to have tried cooking something new everyday.  But, because she lived alone, there wasn't a need to go all out cooking/baking like that.

It wasn't until I saw the movie based on Julia Child's life that I was reminded about the 365 days of new recipes challenge and wanted to try it out. And, last year I pulled together all my cookouts and lined up mail delivery meal services we get so that I could cook a different meal every day for a year.  I am happy to say that I accomplished this, and thought about my Nana every step of the way.  I took ideas from dishes she used to make and added them to the different recipes I was trying out, so that it would feel like she was will be and we were completing this food challenge together. :-)

In addition to Taste of Home magazines that I get on a monthly basis, I also pulled out over a dozen Taste of Home cookbooks I had in my cookbook closet and flagged recipes I thought my family, including my two picky eaters, would eat.  Everyone had fun trying out my nightly dinners, and my husband couldn't believe the dishes I was turning out.  Back when we were in college and early on in our married life I relied on the crock pot and a handful of recipes I would rotate.  So, he was used to the same recipes each week. He said I came a long way from chicken chicken cacciatore and chicken Marsala. :-)  And, he was right, thanks in part to the Taste of Home cookbooks, magazine and cooking programs I attended over the years.

So, while preparing for my holiday gift guide this year, I wanted to make a point to include a couple Taste of Home cookbooks in my gift guide, as I have had readers tell me over the years how much they love to cook and bake, too.  I thought that by sharing some of my favorite cookbooks and brands that you may find a new cookbook or two to pick up and browse through to find wonderful new recipes to make and share with your family and friends this holiday season.

I wanted to share two Taste of Home books I was recently sent to review, and have been having so much fun trying out recipes from both.  One is a meals cookbook which includes some amazing good 'ole home cooking recipes like lasagnas, one pot recipes and dishes perfect for Sunday dinner.  The other cookbook was all about baking and cookies -- which is perfect for this time of year, as many families love rolling up their sleeves and heading into the kitchen together to bake cookies for school and church functions, to serve up to family and friends visiting, or just make some fun and delicious tasting festive cookies.

Here is more about these two cookbooks from Taste of Home that would make a great gift idea for cookbook lovers this holiday season.

Mind Strechers Vol. 1

Do you love mind games and brain teasers?  If so, you will love the new series from Reader's Digest called Mind Stretches.  Currently, there are two volumes in this new puzzle book series sure to delight any puzzle lover this holiday season.

I had the opportunity to check out the two Reader's Digest Mind Stretchers volumes and really enjoyed them. I liked how these two puzzle books included an assortment of challenging puzzles including crosswords, sudoku, logic puzzles, word searches, number puzzles, trivia and more.  These puzzles sure do test your brain muscles. Whenever I am trying to unwind after a long day, I usually grab a puzzle like these to decompress and relax.  I find challenging my brain through these puzzles a way to relax and get my mind to stop thinking about everything else, like what I didn't get done for the day, what needs to be done tomorrow, etc.

"ACTIVATE your thinking muscles. It’s too easy just to turn on the TV and let the images of the day wash over us, leaving brain cells unchallenged and a bit sad. Keep your brain happy with this mind stretching collection of puzzles. Crosswords, word searches, trivia, logic and numerical games—these teasers are all designed to inspire and stimulate the mind. So turn off the dreaded box and turn to Mind Stretchers—you’ll be entertained, learn new things, wake up your brain and it’s definitely more fun than watching the news."

In addition to doing these puzzle books at night time as part of my relaxing "me time," I also love to throw a puzzle book in my bag and bring along when on the go.  When the girls are busy in a class or we are waiting for an appointment, I can pull out the puzzle book and can pass the time trying to solve different mind challenging puzzles.  These puzzle books have 192 pages are really jam packed with puzzles for all ages and experience levels.  These Mind Stretchers books have a lay-flat binding, making them easy to bring with you on the go, and enjoy a good puzzle or challenge wherever and whenever you are.

My Thoughts:

I was excited to receive a copy of "Treasury of Joy and Inspiration" as I have grown up with Reader's Digest and love reading the inspiration, true stories that are included in each issue.  Even though I have been busy with my holiday gift guide and sharing reviews, I have been sneaking in time each night to read a few chapters.  I finally finished tonight, and wanted to share my thoughts on this wonderful new release, in case you were still looking for last minute gift ideas.

You know you are reading a good book when you find yourself laughing and crying in one sitting.  This was the case with this new release from Reader's Digest, as I read each moving story.  As I finished the last story, I began thinking to myself, how did they (Reader's Digest) pull together such an array of inspiration stories, from their 90 years of publication.  Even though I have only been reading them for 30 years, I remembered a few that are included in this book, that moved me and helped me then during some of the rough patches of growing up and being an adult.

A few of my favorites included "The Christmas Present by James A. Michener," which is fitting for this time of year and talks about a young boy receiving a gift that didn't cost anything, except imagination; and, "A Love Like No Other, by Skip Hollandsworth.  In this moving story, we are introduced to Kim and David who have CF, and end up marrying.  But, a short time after they marry David passes away, and then Kim is admitted to the hospital and is diagnosed with a failing body (due to a broken heart).  Moments before she passes away on 9/11, she utters a few unrecognizable words, as if she were talking to David and then dies.  They were then buried side by side, and the tombstone read "Together Forever."  This story reminded me about making sure those around you know how much they mean to you, especially during the holidays when everyone is together.  And, that even if you have a serious medical condition, like CF, doesn't mean you can't experience the joy of love.  David and Kim did, and are now together forever.

As you read through these short stories (average of 5-6 pages each), you will find yourself thinking about your own life and be moved to want to achieve more, reach out and contact someone whom you have lost touch with, or merely slow down and enjoy life more.  Isn't this what we all need, especially around the holidays?  Well, let the folks at Reader's Digest help you unwind and slow down with their new release, "Treasures of Joy and Inspiration."  And, why not consider giving a copy of this book to those on your shopping list who love inspirational books or are fan's of Reader's Digest.  I can see this being a popular book club reading, and once that can be discussed amongst friends over coffee. And, if you do get a chance to read this book, let me know which stories moved/inspired you.
