Besides the age-old pledging to lose weight for the New Year, did you and family decide to work on going green or recycling more? Not many people think of protecting the environment, when they are looking to make improvements for the New Year. And, then, April comes around and we celebrate Earth Day. Did you celebrate Earth Day? Did your children do projects in school centered around Earth Day and protecting/saving our planet? If you did observe Earth Day, are you continue to work on helping to protect the Earth, so that generations to come can enjoy it? I recently read about a new website, www.choosecartons.com, that was launched by Evergreen Packaging, to help bring awareness to choosing paper cartons when you food shop. This website provides a fun, resourceful platform for those already green-leaning consumers to promote cartons and a resource for others to get more information. While there, don't forget to play the interactive Carton Checkout game, obtain useful green tips, get
information on carton recycling and be inspired by recycled-carton art. Consumers who want to spread the news about cartons to
civic organizations and schools can do so with downloadable presentations and
hand-outs, available through this informative website.
In addition to launching this new website, as part of the campaign, Evergreen Packaging is also making a monetary donation to Habitat for Humanity®. As the carton message grows virally and more join the CHOOSECARTONS conversation, the donation amount to Habitat for Humanity will increase. How great is that. You can visit the Choose Cartons website here, where you simply have to click on the Twitter or Facebook icons, and a comment about choosing about "Choosing Cartons" with be shared with your family and friends. Not only will you be helping to educate them on the importance of paper cartons, but you will be healthy a worthwhile cause, Habitat for Humanity®.
Did you know?:
Over
41 million households have access to carton recycling, and that number
is on the rise. In addition, cartons are made from renewable materials –
more than 70 percent of the carton is made from paper, all from trees
from responsibly managed forests.
Packaging plays a very important role in keeping food and beverages
fresh. The environmental impact of a package is just as important as the
contents inside.
Cartons
are recyclable where facilities exist. The paper fiber contained in
cartons is valuable. Recycled cartons are used to make products such as
tissue, office paper, wall boards and other building materials. To
learn if your community accepts cartons for recycling, please visit
www.recyclecartons.com or check with your local recycling program.
Cartons
are made with renewable energy. More than 50 percent of the energy used
to make the paper in Evergreen Packaging’s cartons comes from biomass.
Responsible
forestry promotes new forest growth, and these forests help to diminish
greenhouse gases. Forests remove carbon from the atmosphere and store
it in trees. In the US, due to both increases in the total area of
forest land and increases in the carbon stored per acre, an additional
192 million metric tons of carbon are sequestered each year through
responsible forest management programs nationwide. This offsets roughly
11% of the country’s industrial greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent
of removing almost 135 million passenger vehicles from the nation’s
highways.
I was surprised at these facts, too. After reading these the first time, I then headed to my refrigerator to see what foods were in paper packaging and cartons. To my dismay, I only had one paper carton with milk in it. The rest of foods were in plastic -- cartons, wrappers, etc. I always questioned the freshness of foods, such as milk, if they are packaged in a paper carton. I remember hearing that the light from the refrigerator can spoil foods that it can to, like open containers, paper containers, etc. But, after visiting the Choose Cartons website, I am not more educated about paper packaging and will be making the switch to this type of packaging, when it is available, during each grocery trip.
Watch the following video to learn how to recycle your cartons:
I dare you to take the Fridge Hunt Challenge and see what types of packaging you buy more of. Surprised? Want to do your part and learn more about the benefits of paper cartons. Then, head on over the Choose Cartons website to learn, and share this knowledge with friends and family.
