A shy hippo makes a big impact in this anniversary edition of a Sandra Boynton classic.

A hog and a frog
cavort in the bog.
But not the hippopotamus.
A cat and two rats
are trying on hats.
But not the hippopotamus.

The original But Not the Hippopotamus was an instant favorite among children and parents. Now this hilarious Boynton book is back in a Special 30th Anniversary Edition, complete with its silly rhymes and humorous, charming illustrations.

In this simple, playful board book, a shy hippo watches as other animals engage in social activities. Finally, the other animals invite the hippo along and, after dithering a moment, she leaps into the fun...with hilarious results.

The repetitive, enjoyable rhythm, cheerful mood, and well-crafted, simple rhymes will endear this story to toddlers everywhere. This anniversary edition has an enlarged trim size and metallic ink on the cover, making this Boynton classic even more special.

My Thoughts:

I was so excited to receive this new special 30th Anniversary board book to share with the girls.  We have a couple copies already, which have had their fair share of reading.  I make a point to carry at least 1-2 Sandra Boynton books in my diaper bag, to pull out when I need to entertain the girls at a restaurant or doctor's office.  And, when they visit my parents, my mother makes a point to share some of the Sandra Boynton books she has kept from when my brothers and I were young.

If you are not familiar with Sandra Boynton and her classic books for children, then you really need to get your hands on one of her books and see why she is famous in the world of children's books.  Her stories are short and sweet and the illustrations are whimsical and colorful.  When I read these two books to the girls, Savannah always ends up flipping back a page or two just to point something out that catches her eye.

I have to say I enjoy reading "The Going to Bed Book" the most with the girls, as they always seem to fight to stay awake at night time.  But, when I read this book, they snuggle up with their blankets and bottles and realize it is time to unwind and relax for the night. And, just the cute animals in the book are rocked to sleep by the water, my husband and I gently rock the girls and help them fall asleep.

I can't wait to pick up the additional special 30th edition books from Susan Boynton to share and store for keepsakes for the girls.  Hopefully, one day they will be able to share these wonderful stories with their children, as I have been able to do with them.
