Here's a Great Children's Book from the Popular "The Amazing Scientists" Series to Keep on Your Radar in Sept. All About Raye Montague, a Gifted Women Mathematician in History (Review)

Disclosure:  I was sent a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  All views shared are mine and mine alone.

On Sale September 4, 2018!

Both of my girls are big into science and math, so I was excited when I learned about the new "The Amazing Scientists" series from The Innovation Press.  We have recently read their first two releases -- The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin and The Doctor With an Eye for Eyes: The Story of Dr. Patricia Bath, and were excited when we received the third installment THE GIRL WITH A MIND FOR MATH , which is on sale Sept. 3rd, and is all about Raye Montague.  What I love so much about these books is that it introduces children to famous people in history that they may otherwise not read about in textbooks or books they are reading.  These are the truly unsung heroes that have paved the wave for others in a given field.  What is so great about this series is that it is introducing children to women pioneers in different scientific fields.  My girls had no idea who Dr. Temple Grandin, Dr. Patricia Bath or Raye Montague were before reading these books.  But, after reading the three books in the "The Amazing Scientists" series, they now know and appreciate how their contributions have paved the way for girls like them to pursue their dream no matter how crazy they may be sound, and prove to others that there is a place in the workplace and history for women...and, that women have been making a difference all these years...it is just now that their amazing stories are being told for all to hear.

We really enjoyed this new book in the series, and like the previous two books read, the illustrations really help to bring this story to life and keep kids engaged as you read all this famous mathematician.  You don't have to be a fan of math to appreciate what Raye Montague achieved in her lifetime.  My girls got excited as they read about her impact on the US Navy.  We live in CT and have visited the USS Submarine Museum in Groton, CT and have never read anything about Raye Montague.  The girls are curious to go back and see if they can find anything about her there, or see if the staff know about her.  They will be bringing their new "The Girl With a Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague" with them, and will probably read it for the upteenth time on the way there, and then on the way back home.  This has become a favorite of the three books in this series, and the girls can't wait to pick up future installments and learn about other amazing women scientists who made their mark in history and are finally having their achievements and stories told.

If you love books that empower kids, girls especially to dream big, then you will want to check out this and the other two books in the "The Amazing Scientists" series from The Innovation Press.  You can learn about this upcoming Sept. 3rd, and the two previous releases here:  http://www.theinnovationpress.com/.

More about this book:

"This is the third book in the Amazing Scientists series - you might be familiar with the first two installments, The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin and The Doctor With an Eye for Eyes: The Story of Dr. Patricia Bath. The books have been extremely well received, and help shed a spotlight on diverse women who have often been glossed over by the history books.

"THE GIRL WITH A MIND FOR MATH introduces Raye Montague, a hidden mastermind who made a huge impact in the US Navy. After touring a German submarine in the early 1940s, young Raye set her sights on becoming an engineer. Little did she know sexism and racial inequality would challenge that dream every step of the way, even keeping her greatest career accomplishment a secret for decades. Through it all, the gifted mathematician persisted―finally gaining her well-deserved title in history: a pioneer who changed the course of ship design forever."

The Amazing Scientist series is so important in showing, through the stories of real women who overcame countless obstacles to excel in their fields, that a career in a STEM field is not only a possibility, but can truly become a reality for young girls."

Gear Up Your Back to School Spirit!

For children, the very idea of going back to school after the summer break is both daunting and exciting. On the one hand, they are going to spend more time with their friends. But on the other hand, it’s a new school year that begins, and, with it, new things to learn. It’s easy to understand how this period can be stressful for them. As a parent, you can help to ease their anxiety. For a lot of children, the back-to-school time often feels like a second New year within the year. Indeed, it’s a time of renewal and promises. Consequently, you can play positively with the concept of taking new resolutions and making a positive impression – something that most children aspire to when they meet their new teachers. Here are a few ideas to gear up for school, both at home and outside. Indeed, you’ll find that children are motivated to do well when they start a new school year, but often feel let down by their parents. Use these simple ways to show that you are here to encourage and motivate them.

New year, new clothes
If there is a good time to buy new clothes, the start of a new school year is definitely one. You need to remember that for children, the first few weeks can play a significant role in building their popularity and presence at the school. This is even more important when your child changes school. Just like you want to dress for the job when you start in a new company, your child wants to make the right impression from Day One. For young children who need comfortable clothes that make them feel good, Cotton On Kids proposes a vibrant collection of simple and tasteful colors and designs. For teenagers, it’s best to plan a shopping trip together so that they don’t feel you are imposing a style on them.

Time to introduce healthy eating habits
Maintaining a healthy diet during the summer can be tricky. Ice creams, soda drinks, sweets and bbq parties can affect your child’s habits. You can help them to get back to a healthy diet that provides them with all the vitamins and nutrients by introducing a new lunchbox. As a rule of the thumb, a balanced lunchbox should contain
fresh fruit, crunchy vegetables, dairy food, starchy food, protein or meat, and water. It’s also important to discuss with your child why they don’t eat some elements so that you can improve the lunch options.

Can parents make learning fun?
Last, but not least, there will come a time when your child will need to do involving homework after school. Make it more enjoyable by creating an individual learning spot in their bedroom or in a quiet area at home. Keep all necessary supplies in labeled containers on their desk, so that everything is accessible at all times. Additionally, a little personalization can go a long way. Add a small sign with their names, or choose notebooks with their favorite characters.

As a parent, your task is clear. You need to boost the back-to-school morale by helping your child to make a good impression, get energetic and nourishing food for the body and the brain, and get pleasure in learning. Needless to say; it will be challenging. But your child is worth it!

Back to School Must Haves: Kids Will Go Crazy for the The Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener from Amazeko Comes To Life with Lights and Sound! -- Review and #Giveaway

Disclosure: I was sent a sample from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Kind of an odd question, but do you have a favorite sound from your childhood?  For me, it was the ice cream truck song as it circled the neighborhood, making stops and having kids run behind it to catch up for a cold treat.  Ah, the good 'ole days when you you were young an the only worry was if the ice cream truck would stop in your neighborhood and that it would have your favorite bomb pop or sno cone to enjoy as you sit on the corner with your neighborhood friends talking about how great your summer is going.  I sure do miss those days, when curfew was extended to 9PM, and it was still light out, and you could be a few houses up visiting with friends and still hear your mom calling you for dinner.  There were no cell phones, computers or kids big into video games.  When school let out for the summer, the neighborhood came alive with kids hopping from house to house playing and having fun.  You didn't have to be part of the cool kids group to be included in an impromptu baseball or kickball game.  And, whoever had a pool in their backyard or swingset, had open invites for the neighborhood kids to come and hang out and have fun.

Did you have an ice cream truck that circled your neighborhood as a kid?  If so, do you remember the jingle it would be play to get the kids' attention?  Check out this quick video and tell me if this is what you remember....

This was the song the ice cream truck in our neighborhood played.  We could be in the basement or have the TV on or music blaring, and still hear the bells and jingle.  It was like music to our ears, as we ran through the house trying to shake or piggy banks to get out dollars and coins we had saved up.  And, if our piggy banks were empty or a little short, we were hoping that Mom was in a good mood and would give you a $1 to buy a treat.  I remember that a sno cone cost 75 cents, and we would use the leftover change to buy double bubble bubble gum pouches, or ring pops to stash and enjoy later. :-)

In the above video you will see a cute Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener from Amazeko.  I was recently sent a sample of this pencil sharpener and couldn't wait to show it off to the girls, as they have only seen ice cream trucks at special community events and on television.  I don't see ice cream trucks circling neighborhoods like they used to back when I was a kid, which is a shame as it was a great memory of my childhood and one I would love for my girls to experience.

This Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener is the next best thing.  Come on, who doesn't love sharpening pencils?  I know I loved having to walk to the front of the classroom as as kid to use the wall pencil sharpener, or if I was lucky and that was broke to use the teacher's electric one.  And, with school back in session soon, kids will be getting their school bags ready, and that means they will have a pencil case or bag with newly sharpened pencils to bring to class.

  • Comes to life with lights & sounds when you sharpen your pencil
  • Carbon Steel blade for long-lasting durability
  • Battery operated for portability
  • Safety Shut off while emptying shavings
  • Includes exclusive Amazeko pencil
  • Packaged in gift box
  • Perfect Back to School or Office Gift
  • 4 AA Batteries Included
  • For ages 5+

You may not think to buy a pencil sharpener as part of your Back to School needs, but it is much easier to have your child's pencils sharpened before they head to school, than have to send them and have them take up time in class along with other students, standing in line to sharpen new unsharpened pencils they were all sent to school with.

My girls love sharpening pencils and love their new Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener from Amazeko, which lights up and plays music each and every time they sharpen a pencil.

I love watching my girls smile and giggle every time they reach for and use this pencil sharpener, and I can't help but smile as I hear this jingle from the past and remember all the great summers I had as a child chasing the ice cream truck with my brothers and neighborhood friends.

School is fast approaching, so don't delay in ordering your very own Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener today.

The folks at Amazeko also have a fire truck and police SWAT patty wagon pencil sharpeners that also lights up and plays music, if your kids are more into fire trucks and police rather than ice cream trucks.

Want to win an Ice Cream Pencil Sharpener for your family?   I will not judge if you snatch it up before showing it to the kids, to add to your office desk. :-)  I thought about doing this myself, but wanted my girls to see and try out this fun pencil sharpener, which they have been using non-stop since I shared it with them over the pencil.  There is not a pencil in the house that isn't sharpened.  :-)  And, if one does break, the girls are quick to grab the pencil and sharpen it with their Ice Cream Truck pencil sharpener.

Thanks to the kind folks at Amazeko, one lucky Inspired by Savannah reader will win their very own Ice Cream Truck Pencil sharpener, which comes complete with batteries so you can use it right out of the box and not have to worry about not having the right size batteries on hand.

Head Back to School in Style with These Fun Peppa Pig Products (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent samples from the vendor in exchange for an honest review.  All views shared are mine and mine alone.

School is right around the corner.  Are your kids all ready to head back to school in style?  If they are huge Peppa Pig fans like my two girls are, then they will want to have these fun Peppa Pig Back to School gear ready when they head out the door on the first day of school.

Thanks to the Peppa Pig Parent Program, my girls were sent the above mentioned Peppa Pig Back to School goodies to enjoy.  Even though I homeschool my girls, they still have classes outside the house that require them to bring a backpack and school supplies, as well as lunch tote.  So, these Peppa Pig products will definitely come in handy.

Ever since my girls went off to preschool, they have made a point to have Peppa Pig gear and clothing to get them through the school year.  Here is a picture I found the other day while cleaning up my computer of Savannah's first day of preschool, where she was sporting her favorite Peppa Pig outfit.  I still remember how she would always ask for this dress, and needed to wear it at least once a week. :-)

And, now four years later, she is still making a point to include Peppa Pig in her Back to School shopping and prep for the upcoming school year.

Do you have a Peppa Pig fan in your life who is entering preschool or early elementary grades in the next few weeks?  If so, and they haven't decided on a backpack or lunch tote, or want to have a back up like my girls do, then why not consider picking up the Peppa Pig backpack and lunch tote I shared above.  My girls love their new Back to School gear featuring their favorite talking pig, and know they will be heading back to school in style, and turning heads with their fun Peppa Pig glasses :-)

You can buy these cute Peppa Pig Sunstaches glasses at Amazon for only $11.64.

And, if you are like me and like to share a few "Back to School" books with your children as you get them back on a sleep schedule, why not consider picking up "Peppa's School Day," which is a Level 1 Reader, and perfect for beginner readers who love Peppa Pig.

Your little one will get excited about returning or starting school, while also building their sight word recognition that they can sound out, and reading simple sentences along with you.  Both of my girls are great readers and whizzed right through this book. But, they did say it was a cute book for back to school, and one they would read time and again. :-)

To learn more about Peppa Pig, head on over to official Peppa Pig website -- http://www.peppapig.com/.

And, I hope your child has an oink-tastic school year! :-)

Steven Universe The Heart Of The Crystal Gems To Be Released Tomorrow (8/14) on DVD (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent a review copy from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Arrives on DVD TOMORROW!!!!

Last month my husband cleared his evening schedule so that he would be free to watch a 5-night Steven Universe special that aired on Cartoon Network.  'The Heart of The Crystal Gems", brought back some old friends of the series like Bismuth and Lapis Lazuli, and even had a reunion and marriage of Ruby and Sapphire. There was also a showdown against Blue and Yellow Diamond, and all this happened in just five episodes. My husband called it an epic Steven Universe event, and one that answered many questions and brought closure to story lines from this popular Cartoon Network series.  Usually my husband doesn't get wrapped in shows, but there was something about Steven Universe that got him hooked, and had him watching this series, and wanting to get all the episodes on DVD so that he could watch time and again.  I tried to sit and watch a couple of these episodes, but couldn't get into it.  Maybe it was because my husband was on the edge of his seat and letting out gasps and grumbles as the episodes aired, that it was hard to concentrate.  But, I liked seeing him get excited about the show, and once the 5-night event was over, this was all he could talk about to me and a few friends at his work who were also hooked on Steven Universe.  He hoped that they would come out with a DVD and soon, so that he could watch the episodes again.

I was happy to let him know that Cartoon Network was indeed releasing the 5-part "The Heart of the Crystal Gems" onto DVD, as of tomorrow August 14th.  In addition to the 5-part special this upcoming DVD release would also include 5 additional already aired episodes from the popular Steven Universe series.  My husband binge watched all ten episodes when I shared this DVD release with him on Friday.  He was able to watch them all in a weekend, and was just excited watching them again, as he was the first time he saw the 5-part special last month on the Cartoon Network.

Here is more about this upcoming DVD release:

Additionally, fans can celebrate the emotional moments of Steven Universe: The Heart of the Crystal Gems through a limited consumer product collection including key chains, t-shirts, wristbands, socks and more, which will be available at retail beginning this month.

Count Down to Halloween with These Two Upcoming PBS Kids DVD Releases from PBS Distribution (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent review copies from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Are you ready for Halloween?  I know....it isn't even September yet, but Halloween aisles filled with candy, costumes and decorations are popping up right next to the Back to School stuff.  My husband and daughters saw the Halloween store getting ready to open in a nearby shopping plaza, which got the girls excited and starting to think about what they want to be this Halloween.

Because my girls have seen the Halloween aisles in the stores while we have been doing Back to School shopping, they have pulled out some of their favorite Halloween-themed books and DVDs to watch, as they count to October 31st.  Thy were excited when they saw two new Halloween-themed DVDs arrived on our doorstep from PBS Kids.  We received "Ready Jet Go!: Jet's First Halloween" and "Garfield's Halloween Adventures" for review.

Here is more about these two upcoming DVD releases, arriving in stores on August 28th.

Available Now on Digital HD

"Public Media Distribution, LLC announced today it is releasing the new DVD “GARFIELDGARFIELD’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURES” on 8/28.. Kids and parents can join Garfield and Odie as they get dressed up as pirates to go “trick-or-treating.” Will they be able to escape the haunted house where pirate ghosts are supposed to show up?

GARFIELDGARFIELD’S HALLOWEEN ADVENTURES will be available on DVD 8/28 and has a run time of approximately 74 minutes. The SRP is $6.99.

The DVD features these two fun-filled episodes:

Garfield’s Halloween Adventure
Garfield and Odie get dressed up as pirates to go “trick-or-treating.” When they attempt to cross the river in a rowboat, they accidentally end up at a haunted house where ghostly pirates are expected any minute!

Garfield Goes Hollywood
When the TV show PET SEARCH announces a pet talent contest, Jon devises an act for him, Garfield and Odie: ‘Jonny Bop and the Two Steps.’ They win the local event and head to Hollywood for the finals where Garfield and Odie cut Jon out of the act and become ‘The Dancing Armandos.’"

"PBS Distribution recently announced the first DVD from the PBS KIDS series, READY JET GO!, with “READY JET GO!: JET’S FIRST HALLOWEEN.” In the four episodes on this new DVD, Jet learns all of the classic Halloween to-dos, such as carving Jack-o-lanterns, dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating. Along the way, the kids will witness a lunar eclipse and learn all about the Red Moon.
READY JET GO!: JET’S FIRST HALLOWEEN” ($6.99 SRP) will be available on DVD beginning 8/28, and has a run time of approximately 80 minutes. Episodes of READY JET GO! are also available for digital download.

In READY JET GO!” viewers go on a journey into outer space, building on children’s curiosity about science, technology and astronomy. The series follows two neighborhood kids: Sean, who has an all-consuming drive for science facts, and Sydney, who has a passion for science fiction and imagination. They both befriend the new kid on their street, Jet Propulsion, whose family members happen to be aliens from planet Bortron 7.
The four stories on this DVD include:

“Jet’s First Halloween Part 1”
Sydney, Sean and Mindy help Jet experience his first Halloween. They come up with a list of classic Halloween to-dos, including carving Jack-o-lanterns, dressing up in costumes, and collecting candy. Celery takes the kids on a quick trip to space to see what causes a lunar eclipse. Meanwhile, Mitchell Petersen is on the case to figure out what exactly is going on with that strange Propulsion family…
“Jet’s First Halloween Part 2”
Sydney, Sean and Mindy take Jet trick-or-treating, and along the way, they learn about the Red Moon effect from some of the neighborhood scientists. Carrot and Celery turn their garage into a haunted house, which is an unexpected hit with the neighborhood. Jet and Sunspot even make Mindy’s Halloween wish come true by flying across the Red Moon pretending to be a witch and her cat on a broom.
“Diggin’ Earth”
The kids try to dig into the Center of the Earth (a la Sydney’s comic book hero, Commander Cressida), but after finding out that the center is much too hot and the layer of Earth leading up to it is solid rock, they re-vamp their plans. They decide to become the kids to dig down the deepest into the Earth. Learning about the layers of the Earth inspires Jet to make an Earth Layer Cake.
“Mindy’s Mystery”
Mindy can’t sleep one night, having been kept awake by a sweet, strong smell from outside. Sydney, Sean, Jet and Sunspot become detectives and try to crack the case of the sweet smell. At the same time, Mitchell is investigating what kept him up last night – a very bright “annoying” light. In the end, there’s a common source – the sweet smell was from a nocturnal flower, the Moonflower, which only blooms at night, after sundown. And the bright light was from the moon!"

My girls really enjoyed these two DVD releases.  They are not really big Ready Jet Go! fans, but found themselves getting into this popular animated series as they love holiday-themed episodes, and this DVD contained a 2-part Halloween special, as well as two additional full-length episodes which have already aired on television -- "Diggin' Earth" and "Mindy's Mystery."  They loved the concept of Jet and his friends using detective skills to crack the case and figure out what was keeping Mindy awake.  And, the Halloween special was so much fun, and had everything you would expect in a Halloween show -- witches, jack-o-laterns, costumes, trick-or-treating and more. :-)  If you have a Ready Jet Go! fan in your life, or have kids who just loved holiday-themed DVDs, then you will definitely want to check out this DVD.

As far as the Garfield Halloween release, this was also a hit with my girls, who were first introduced to Garfield when they stumbled upon my childhood VHS collection of Garfield shows and movies a few years back. And, ever since, they will watch anything and everything Garfield, and call me over so that we can enjoy it together.  I sat with the girls and watched this DVD, which contains a Halloween episode as well as "Garfield Goes Hollywood," and and really enjoyed it. I loved how I was able to share a favorite childhood character with my girls, and see them get excited about it, like I used to as a kid.

So, while there is still about two months until Halloween, why not start getting into the Halloween spirit with these two upcoming DVD releases, which are only $6.99 each, from PBS Distribution, and will be available on August 28th.
