"ALL ARE WELCOME" is a Welcoming Picture Book Celebrating Diversity and Encouragement for Kids

Disclosure:  I was sent a review copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.  All views shared are mine and mine alone.

I love when I stumble upon a book that celebrates diversity and encourages kids to be kids and not to look at or judge others based on the color of their skin.   So, when I heard about a new children’s picture book, “All Are Welcome,” by Alexandra Penfold, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy to share with my girls, and share my thoughts in a post on my blog.

As you know I homeschool my two girls.  But, we also go to classes outside the house, so they are around kids of all races, nationalities, etc.  And, being part Latina, my girls are now at the age that they notice their skin color is different from mine, as I have pale white skin, and they are lucky to have beautiful tan skin thanks to their Daddy who is from El Salvador.  The girls have asked why we look different, and I have talked with and even shared books about diversity with them, to help them truly understand how everyone  on this planet is different in some, and that shouldn’t be a reason to mistreat or judge them.

This book is really well written, and is recommended for children ages 4-8 years old.  The pages are filled with vibrant colors that really help to bring the story of inclusion to life.  Children will be introduced to people from all walks of life who may look different or dress different from them, as they read through the pages of “All Are Welcome.”  They will see a school filled with kids wearing patkas, hijabs and even yarmulkes, who play side by side in the classroom and out at recess.  I really love how this book is written and how they include so many races, religions and backgrounds, while repeating one key phrase, “All are welcome.”  There is even a sign hanging outside the school that has this phrase, making it a welcoming school and story from the very start.
----
About this book:

A warm, welcoming picture book that celebrates diversity and gives encouragement and support to all kids.

Follow a group of children through a day in their school, where everyone is welcomed with open arms. A school where kids in patkas, hijabs, and yamulkes play side-by-side with friends in baseball caps. A school where students grow and learn from each other's traditions and the whole community gathers to celebrate the Lunar New Year. All Are Welcome lets young children know that no matter what, they have a place, they have a space, they are welcome in their school."

----

My girls really enjoyed this book, and have even talked about it with their friends.  They have even shown interest in learning about the cultural differences and traditions of those they saw in the book, so that they can learn and appreciate the diverse world we live in.

I highly recommend this book for teachers looking for a book to share with their classrooms at the start of school, to remind children that even they their classmates may look different, that they shouldn’t be treated differently.  Children may have questions and wonder why their fellow classmates may be wearing clothing or a headpiece.  This book is great to share and open up the lines of discussion about diversity and need for inclusion of all.  With all the craziness in the world right now, it is nice to look to our children and see them open their arms and hearts to those who may be different. They don’t see color or religion…they just see an opportunity for a new friendship.  That is how it should be for all of all – welcoming everyone with open arms.  We should live the theme of this book – “All Are Welcome.”  Hopefully this book will be a reminder of this powerful message of inclusion, and have us thinking twice when we see someone who may be different than us, and be reminded that we should all be treated equal.

To learn more about this wonderful new children’s book, which hit stores shelves back on July 10th, head on over to Random House Kids today.

New from the Little Simon, Celebrate the World Board Book Series -- Día de los Muertos, Arrives in Stores on 7/31 (Review)

Arrives on Bookshelves on July 24th, 2018

Dia de los muertos 9781534415157 hr

Thanks to last year’s animated movie, Coco, many young children and families were introduced to the Mexican/Latin holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  My girls were already aware of this holiday as we touch upon on it in our homeschooling each November, and I remind them of it, as it falls on my birthday, Nov. 2nd, each year.  But, thanks to the animated movie, Coco children were able to see this ancient tradition brought to life.

Dia de los muertos 9781534415157.in03

They got to see how families put out pictures in a shrine/alter of those who have passed on, and how they cook up lots of food and visit the cemeteries as a family to visit and have picnic near the tombstones of their beloved who are no longer here.  Then, they return home to continue the party at home, or in the streets.  My husband shared with the girls how they used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos back in his country of El Salvador and how it was a joyous time with lots of food, music and even fireworks.  Death wasn’t looked at as something to be sad about when celebrating this tradition.  Instead, it was treated like a party and a way to honor those ancestors who have passed away, and share stories of their beloved.

Dia de los muertos 9781534415157.in01

I was excited to share this book with my girls, as they really enjoyed the previous “Celebrate the World” book we read, and I shared a review on – “Ramadan.”  Similar to “Ramadan,” this board book is filled with colorful illustrations that bring the tradition of Dia de los Muertos to life.  The illustrations also had a folk-type style to them as this is a favorite of the illustrator, which gave a playful and fun spin on the illustrations that fill the pages of this board, and really made the story come to life.

Dia de los muertos 9781534415157.in05

My girls walked away with a greater appreciation of this ancient tradition, and want to try and incorporate some of the festivities and treats into our very own Dia de los Muertos celebration of life this November, as we remember ancestors from both sides of the family who have passed, but still hold a special place in our hearts.

Dia de los muertos 9781534415157.in02

If you love books that celebrate special occasion and holidays celebrated all around the world, then you will definitely want to pick up “Dia de los Muertos,” by Hannah Eliot, when it arrives in stores on July 24, from Little Simon.

More about this book:

“Readers will learn all about the traditions of Dia de los Muertos with this second book in the brand-new board book series “Celebrate the World,” which highlights special occasions and holidays across the globe.

Beginning on October 31st, each year, it’s time to celebrate an ancient tradition: Dia de los Muertos! With vibrant illustrations by Golden Globe-winning Mexican illustrator Jorge Gutierrez, this festive board book teaches that Dia de los Muertos honors ancestors and loved ones who have passed.  From sugar skulls to papel picado, this is a holiday that truly commemorates the cycle of life.”

Cool topics, huh?  We really had fun watching these two DVDs, and will definitely be watching again, and including in our homeschooling studies.  If you love exploring unexpected places, hunting for signs of extra-terrestrial life and learning more about animals and other life that roam the world, then you will love NOVA: WONDERS.

More about this upcoming DVD release:

"PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing the all new series “NOVAWONDERS” on DVD and Digital HD. This tantalizing new program takes viewers on a journey to the frontiers of science and is hosted by three engaging young scientists. The series follows remarkable researchers who are tackling the biggest unanswered questions about life and the cosmos, pushing the boundaries of understanding in ways that could transform our world and the future.

NOVAWONDERS(SRP $34.99) will be available on DVD July 31, 2018, and has a run time of approximately 360 minutes on 2 discs. The program is also available for digital download.

NOVAWONDERS” is a fresh, lively series that makes complicated concepts accessible while taking a deep dive into the scientific process. Each episode poses a big scientific question and takes viewers along on a journey to explore how far we’ve come in our quest for answers, and how we’ve managed to get here. Among the intriguing topics pondered are the secret language of animals, what’s hidden in the human body, the artificial intelligence technologies that could rival and surpass the abilities of the human mind, the controversial power to engineer life in a lab, and the mysteries of the universe.

The program travels to some unexpected places to look for answers — including deep underwater, where humpback whales are essentially playing a game of “telephone” across the world, with pods teaching each other new songs; deep beneath our skin, where trillions of microbes are living in our bodies; deep below the earth, in mines where researchers are trying to detect elusive dark matter particles; deep into space, where astrophysicists are hunting for signs of extra-terrestrial life, and more.

Three young scientists serve as enthusiastic guides and science communicators. Talithia Williams is a mathematician and statistician who also applies data models to the human body and the environment. She is joined by co-hosts Rana el Kaliouby, a computer scientist developing emotion recognition technology used in artificial intelligence, and André Fenton, a neuroscientist studying the biology of memory. All three set-up the inquiry, demonstrate key aspects of the challenges facing scientists, and ask provocative questions about research carried out on the winding paths of uncertainty and the unknown.

Make Family Movie Night Fun for the Whole Family with the New Release, A.R.C.H.I.E. 2: Mission Impawsible - Available Now on DVD! (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent a screener and promotional product from vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Available now on DVD, Digital and On Demand!

My girls have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of our review copy of ARCHIE 2: MISSION IMPAWSIBLE.  It finally arrived yesterday, and it was definitely worth the wait.  Usually we wait until Fridays to watch movies, but with all the rain and thunder we were having last night, I thought it would be nice to watch this cute family-friendly movie and get the girls' mind off the storm outside.  My oldest is not a fan of thunder and lightning, and was getting a little anxious trying to keep busy, while also trying to ignore what she was hearing outside.  But, thanks to this movie, she totally forgot about the storm, while she enjoyed this fun movie, featuring the cutest dog on the planet. :-)

Here is more about A.R.C.H.I.E. 2: Mission Impawsible, if you haven't heard about this movie:

"In this funny family adventure, the legendary Michael J. Fox plays Archie, the world’s only talking, flying robot dog! Archie tags along as his owner Sydney runs away to join a struggling family circus. But clumsy Sydney’s only hope of stardom is a fake ventriloquist act featuring his wisecracking, woofing pal. Together they’re a hit and the circus is saved—until a villain plots to steal the priceless dog and trade him for big bucks. Step right up for thrills, chills, and laughs, Archie-style!"

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES:
  • Behind the Scenes with Cast/Crew Interviews
  • Trailer Gallery

---

We hadn't watched the first A.R.C.H.I.E movie, so I wasn't sure if we would be at a disadvantage and not know what was going on.  But, as the movie started, I found we could enjoy this sequel without watching the first movie.  We will definitely be watching the first Archie movie, now that we have seen this one and loved it.  I think we have our Friday movie night movie already picked out thanks to this cute flying robotic dog.

We have seen many talking dog movies, but I have to say that this is my favorite by far.  Maybe I am partial as I love Michael J. Fox and was excited to learn that he voiced A.R.C.H.I.E., but, I think it is the storyline that really sealed the deal.    In the sequel to A.R.C.H.I.E, a young boy named Gregory (the carnival owner's son) befriends Archie, and asks for his help in finding out who has been stealing from the carnival.  Leave it to this talking and flying dog, to swoop in and help save the circus.  The movie is filled with adventure and laughs right from the start...come on, a talking dog...you wouldn't expect anything less! :-)

So, does Archie save the day?  Don't worry, I will not ruin the ending for you...you will just have to pick up this movie, available as of yesterday, July 17th, on DVD, Digital and On Demand.  I will say, it will delights kids and adults of ages, and makes for a great family movie night.  We watched it from start to finish, munching on the snacks we were sent with our viewing kit, and after the girls posed with the cute red bow and aviator glasses we were also sent.

My youngest was trying to recreate the DVD cover art, when she put the red bow around her neck and posed with her cool new shades. :-)

A.R.C.H.I.E. 2: Mission Impawsible is a hit with our family, and I know it will be yours, too.  So, what are you waiting for?  Order this movie and then gather some snacks and your family and get ready for a memorable movie night, filled with laughs and smiles, as you all enjoy Archie, the robot dog.  We are crossing our fingers for a third installment, thanks to a funny line Archie shares in the ending credits -- make sure you watch for it, and let me know what you think. :-)

And, here is a cute activity sheet you can print out and share with your children. My girls completed the sheet before we watched the movie, as I made them wait until Daddy got home so we could all watch this movie. They loved the word search and spot the difference puzzles, and it only made them more excited to watch this movie. :-)

Two All New Nature Titles Releasing This July From PBS Distribution -- Includes One for Shark Fans! (Review)

Disclosure: I was sent screeners from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

TWO NEW NATURE PROGRAMS COMING FROM
PBS DISTRIBUTION THIS JULY

Both Available on DVD July 31st from PBS Distribution
Available Now on Digital HD

My girls and their Daddy are counting down the days until Shark Week -- only 5 more days to gom until a full week of all things sharks.  This has become a summer ritual for us since the girls got interested in sharks a few years back.  Now, we do a full week of shark-themed work and activitiees the week leading up to Shark Week, and then the girls record the full week so that they watch during and long after Shark Week ends.

As the girls wait for Shark Week, I surprised them the other day with an upcoming DVD release (currently available for purchase on Digital) from PBS Nature -- Shark Mountain.  This documentary is about an hour in length, gives shark fans a close up like never before.  “NATURE: SHARK MOUNTAIN” takes viewers on an underwater journey showing the wonders of Cocos Island, which has become known as Shark Mountain.

My girls were all smiles when they saw the DVD and couldn't wait to sit and watch it.  We have only had this DVD for about a week now, and have already watched it a handful of times.  The girls really like the spectular video captured of this amazing underwater journey.  Bella says it feels like she is in a submarine underwater watching the sharks.  It really is a nice documentary for shark fans, and those interested in the beauty of underwater creatures.

This DVD, which arrives in stores on July 31st, would be a great DVD to pick up and share with that special shark lover in your life.

If sharks aren't your think, how about the upcoming NATURE: THE WORLD’S MOST WANTED ANIMAL”, which releases on the same day as Nature: Shark Mountain, on July 31st?  This DVD release, which is already available to purchase and view in digital format, is about the endangered Pangolins.  Do you know what a Pangolin is?  I had never heard about this species until the movie, and really found this documentary fascinating.  My girls and I learned so much about the Pangolins, which are more endangered and higher trafficked than most other animals.  These scaly anteaters really are an interested mammal, and this documentary sheds light on these relatively unknown animals, in a plight to help save them from going extinct.

Both of these PBS Nature DVDs were fun to watch with my girls, and we all learned so much.  I really love how PBS Nature gets you up close and personal with different animals, through their amazing high definition video capturing of the animals in their own habitats.  We will definitely be watching these documentaries again, and will be using them for reference in our homeschooling for years to come.

More about these DVDs:

"PBS Distribution announced today it is releasing two new NATURE titles, “NATURE: SHARK MOUNTAIN” and NATURE: THE WORLD’S MOST WANTED ANIMAL” on DVD and Digital HD.Both titles will be available on DVD July 31st, and are currently available now on Digital HD. Information about each program is listed below.

NATURE: SHARK MOUNTAIN
In the dead of the night, a team of filmmakers jump into the ocean to film hunting behavior on the reef. But first, they must make it through a pack of as many as 50 large and dangerous sharks gathering just below the surface. It is not a dive that many would make. But with Howard and Michele Hall, two of the world’s leading underwater filmmakers, something incredible is always just about to happen.

Thousands of sharks – silkies, white tips, black tips, and hammerheads – hunt along the volcanic reefs of Cocos Island, so many that the island has also become known as Shark Mountain. But the waters around this tiny outpost in the Pacific are filled with ocean life so rich and diverse that the island and a twelve-mile zone all around it has been designated a Costa Rican National Park and World Heritage Site.

Shot in spectacular high definition video, the program takes viewers on the underwater journey of a lifetime, showing the wonders of Cocos. Yet it is a world that is disappearing as the years pass, for even places as remote and protected as Cocos are at risk in today’s world.

NATURE: SHARK MOUNTAIN will be available on DVD July 31st (SRP $24.99) and has a run time of approximately 54 minutes on 1 disc. The program is also available for digital download.

NATURE: THE WORLD’S MOST WANTED ANIMAL
Pangolins are often described as “the most endangered animal you’ve never heard of.” The world’s only scaly mammal, pangolins are now trafficked at a higher rate than rhinos, elephants and tigers combined, for medicinal use in China, Thailand and Vietnam. Very little is known about even their most basic biology, and this is hampering conservation efforts – pangolins almost always die in captivity. In Namibia, conservationist Maria Diekmann found herself on the frontline of the battle to save these wanted animals after unexpectedly becoming a surrogate mother to an orphaned baby pangolin named Honey Bun. On an emotional journey, Diekmann travels to Asia to better understand the global issues facing pangolins, before joining forces with a Chinese megastar to help build a campaign to bring awareness to the plight of these surprisingly charming creatures.

NATURE: THE WORLD’S MOST WANTED ANIMAL” (SRP $24.99) will be available on DVD July 31st,  and has a run time of approximately 53 minutes on 1 disc. The program is also available for digital download."

Fans of the New Hotel Transylvania 3 Movie Will Love the Lip Gloss and Nail Polish Sets Available Now from Townleygirl! -- Enter to #Win 2 Sets Now! ( Review and #Giveaway )

Disclosure:  I was sent samples from the vendor in exchange for an honest review. All views shared are mine and mine alone.

Townleygirl

Summer is halfway over.  How has your summer been going so far?  Have you been able to make it to the movies with your family to escape the heat, and take in a good movie?  We have been taking advantage of the summer deals at our nearby theaters and seeing all the must-see summer flicks.  We recently saw Hotel Transylvania 3 for the second time, and the girls are already asking to see it again.

We first watched it two weeks before the movie's release date thanks to an Amazon Prime special screening, and from that point on, this has been all the girls have been talking about.  So, when they saw me take out two Townleygirl kits from the mail last week, they were all smiles.  These nail and lip gloss sets are just like the Incredibles ones I shared with you a couple weeks ago and did a giveaway for (read on to learn how you can enter for a chance to win 2 Hotel Transylvania 3 sets from Townleygirl).  Savannah was quick to grab the lip gloss set, as she loves applying flavored lip gloss to her lips to keep them smooth and sparkly. :-)

Bella was happy to get the nail polish set as she is all about giving manicures and doing her nails so that they look nice.  And, she loved that this Townleygirl set came with nail stickers so she could apply, and show off her love for this great summer movie.

Sisters being sisters, the girls realized that they each were sent 4 pieces with their sets -- Bella got 4 different nail polishes and Savannah got 4 lip balms.  So, they decided to share two from their sets so that they both could enjoy the nail polish and lip balms.  I love seeing the girls share like this, and getting along. :-)

Like I shared in my last Townleygirl post, I have fan of these sets for girls for a few years now -- ever since my girls started to take interest in beauty products and wanting to make themselves look pretty.  What I love about these sets is that they are playful and usually center on a popular show or movie the girls are into, as well as how each comes with a tin or storage bag or container for the girls to keep their lip balms, nail polish and accessories in.

I love not having to go around the house picking up their beauty accessories, as they are quick to put them in the containers or tins and put them in their rooms on their vanity tables.   And, if we are traveling, they love gathering up their must have lip glosses/balms and nail polishes and bringing along in their own makeup totes.  Where did my little girls go?

If you have a fan of the new Hotel Transylvania 3 movie and they are into nail polish and lip balms like my girls, why not consider picking up a few of the sets now available from the new Hotel Transylvania Townleygirl collection.  These would make great birthday gifts or to pick up and stash away for stocking stuffers this Christmas.

Kids Will Love the John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader from TOMY - Perfect For Play Indoors or Out in the Sandbox (Review)

Disclosure:  I was sent a sample from TOMY in exchange for an honest review.  All views shared are mine and mine alone.

John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader

Who says tractor toys are just for boys?  I have two girls, and ever since they starting crawling, they loved pushing along the little cars and John Deere tractor toys they had.  We live in the Quiet Corner of CT where there are a lot of farms and open land that is used for growing grass for hay.  The girls have grown up seeing both men and women tending these fields, and whenever we attend agricultural fairs we see them both driving those cool oversized farm equipment.  So, my girls have never thought tractor-type toys weren't customary for girls to play with.  And, even now, as they get older,  they still love to pull out their John Deere tractors when they are playing with their horse barn and other farm toys.  Their favorite tractors come from the popular Monster Treads toy line from TOMY, as many offer sound and lights, while all come with oversized wheels, and usually removal parts, like the wagon in their new favorite TOMY toy, the John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader .

John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader Features:

Take the Action Off-Road!

"The best of both worlds collide when John Deere meets monster vehicle styling! Ready to tackle any obstacle that lies in their path, Monster Treads are the ultimate in off-road vehicle play!"

The John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader is perfect for little ones ages 3+ as it is made of durable plastic and not metal like many tractor toys.  This is perfect for little ones who may a little unsteady on their feet, or may get too revved up pushing their tractor and wagon around the house that they may crash, as it will not hurt or cut them if they tumble over it.  Even though I only have girls, I have had my fair share of visits to the ER because the girls trip or slip and land on a toy and its ends up cutting them or hurting them in some way.  We have never had issues with TOMY toys, especially the Monster Treads line, which my girls really do put through the wringer.

My girls were recently sent the John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader from TOMY, and they were all smiles when they saw it.  When I shared the tractor toy with them, they were already in the midst of playing with their puppy plush toys and didn't want to stop.  So, they ended up incorporating the John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader in their play, by having their pup pals tending to the farm, and giving hay rides to their friends.

I love seeing my girls use their imaginations when they are playing, and they really get into the pretend play, making up stories and adding a variety of toys to the mix.

See, even girls will smile when they are given a John Deere tractor toy. :-)  We have only had this toy for about a week, but it has become a staple in the girls' daily play.

In addition to using with their plush toys and horse barn, they have even this toy as part of a farmer's market they put together.  They had the tractor drive through their crop field -- aka a green blanket, where they sprinkled pretend vegetable toys on.  As they made their way through the field, they would make pit stops at the spoiled crop and push out of the with the movable front loader , and then would fill the detachable wagon with their vegetables, which they would drive over to their farm stands to sell.

My girls have really been enjoying the John Deere 8" Monster Treads Tractor with Wagon and Loader, which is available at Walmart for under $20.  This is the fourth Monster Treads toy from TOMY that they own, and it will not be the last. :-)
