In the day and age where everyone, even kids have their faces in their phones, and we are easily distracted with a ping or notification, it was just a matter of time before a classic holiday tale would be retold to showcase how phone obsessed we are.  Enter "Bah! Humbug!" by Michael Rosen, a classic retelling of the Dickens's holiday tale, that will have kids and adults laughing but also realizing that this is how we have become -- so work and phone obsessed, that we are missing the most important things around us.

We have been reading this chapter book for the past few nights a family, and just finished it up tonight.  What was so great about this story is that it was written as a story within a story.  The story focuses around a young boy named Harry who is set to play Scrooge in the school play. But, as we learn more about Harry and his family, we see that his dad is an actual Scrooge, in today's day and age.

Just like in the classic Scrooge books and movies, we see snippets from the whole family, the author makes this retelling heartfelt but also current.  There are parts that will have you giggling, and others that will have you loving how the author made something current go hand in hand with the retelling of the classic Scrooge tale we all love and enjoyed for years.  I personally loved seeing the struggle between father and son in the book, and how the son seems to grow up and mature over the course of the book.  You can't help but feel for Harry, but also feel proud of the man he is becoming and how he portrays Scrooge in the play.

This is definitely one of those books you will want to read each year, and find things you missed or may have forgotten about, as well as leave out on the coffee table for family and friends to pick up and sift through the pages, finding it an interesting read.

More about this book:

"This Christmas, join Michael Rosen and Tony Ross with their unforgettable retelling of Charles Dickens's beloved holiday classic. Harry Gruber plays the role of Scrooge in his school's production of "A Christmas Carol," and he is extra nervous about tonight's performance because his father is in the audience — not away for business, as usual. Will the story's message of Christmas cheer and the redemptive power of love reach his father's distracted Scrooge heart?
A timely retelling of A Christmas Carol for the whole family about a smartphone-obsessed dad."
