This is one of my favorite times of year for blogging, as I get to read and share a wonderful selection of children's books with my girls and readers.  And, this year I am amazed at the wonderful and oh so fun books that have been sent to me from children's publishers I have been working with for years.  Today, I will be sharing a few books from Sterling Publishing Co. that my girls and I have been enjoying reading at bedtime, and throughout the day.

First up is Hoot & Honk: Just Can't Sleep by Leslie Helakoski.  Here is more about this book...

Dark sky. Wake or doze?

Some eyes open. Some eyes close.

Leslie Helakoski’s gentle, lilting verse and irresistible illustrations make the perfect bedtime story as they capture two adorable babies exploring the world for the first time."

My Thoughts:

Both of my girls love owls, so they were excited to see a book with a cute owl arrive in the mail for me to read to them.  I have been a fan of children's books from Sterling Publishing Co. for years, as I love the authors they work and the books that are put out.  I have yet to run into an instance where the girls and I don't like a book we were sent to review.  This recent release, which is a perfect way to welcome in spring, adds a little fun at bedtime for little ones.  Who can resist cute baby birds...in this case an adorable owlet named Hoot and Honk, who is a fuzzy gosling.  I had to join in with the girls with the "oh how cute" comments when we first read this book.

The story itself it easy for children of all ages to understand.  Hoot and Honk wind up in wrong nests after their eggs are switched.  When they hatch they realize they are different from their siblings.  They also find that their sleep schedules and food preferences and different, and that they just don't fit in.  As you read through the book, stopping to admire the wonderful illustrations that really bring the story to life, you will find that in the end their mother's come for them and they are brought back to their correct nests, where they realize they weren't different after all.  It was just a mix up. :-)

This is a great book to read at bedtime, I have two night owls who are never tired when it is time for bed.  I love reading this book and pretending that maybe they were switched and should be living with the owls who are up hooting all night long.  They giggle, and then nestle in to hear me read the rest of the story, before falling fast asleep like Honk does at night.
