It is hard to not think of Johnny Carson when you think of late night show hosts. He will also be the greatest host of the Tonight Show in my eyes. What do you think?
My father was a police officer and would also work long hours, usually including details. I would try my hardest to stay up at night time to see him return safely, as well as to get in a little daddy/daughter time. He would eat his reheated dinner, while we sat together on the couch watching Johnny. As we watched the show, he would tell me about different guests, as many of them I didn't know about. But, as the show went on and I got older, I was able to pick out popular actors and actresses and even some great comedians like Jay Leno and David Letterman. I never thought either man would go on to become late show hosts like Johnny. All I knew is I liked the jokes they told and knew they would be successful stand up comics.
As the years went on and I got older, I would still continue to wait up for my dad, and we would watch The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It became a ritual for us, and one I continue to cherish to this day. So, when I heard the folks at Time Life were releasing THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON: THE VAULT SERIES to DVD back on the 8th of November, I was excited. What perfect timing...a few days after my birthday. You could say they planned it as a great birthday gift for me. :-)
I requested a sample be sent for review, and couldn't wait to share the news with my dad. I knew he would be just as excited as I was when I originally heard about the vault collection coming to DVD. I couldn't wait to have my parents come to visit, just so I could put on the DVDs and sit down and watch some of the episodes again with my Dad. Unfortunately, we have been sidelined with colds and pneumonia, so I have had parents stay away, as not to pick up any germs. My dad and I plan to watch some of the episodes -- not sure we can get all 6 DVDs watched in one weekend (but we will try), when they come down for Thanksgiving. I can't wait to sit and watch them with him, and have a conversations like we used about the guests. This show helped my dad and I connect and we have a special relationship because of the show.
