SCRABBLE

Growing up my favorite board game to play was Scrabble.  Most of my friends thought I was weird for liking a word game.  If only they knew that I had been playing with the Scrabble tiles since I was 3 years old, as my mom used the game to teach my brothers and I letter recognition and had us build 3-4 letter words.  I had so much fun, and when I was old enough to really get the concept of this class word game, I was hooked.  Every week for game night, my family knew that when it came to choosing a game, I would be choosing Scrabble to play.  Fast forward 20+ years, I am so excited to see people getting hooked on words games through their phone and tablet apps...if only they knew these games were based off of the classic Scrabble game.  I also can't help but laugh when I talk with old childhood friends online when they send me a request to play these games.  I love reminding them how they thought I was geeky for liking Scrabble as kid.  :-)

And, now that I have children of my own, I have been using the same teaching style as my mom.  Savannah gets so excited when she sees me pulling out the Scrabble game board and knows what fun is in store.  Together we name the different letters of the alphabet, find matches and build small 3 letter words.  I love seeing the big grin on Savannah's face when she makes words or can put all 26 letters of the alphabet in order.

She is so proud of herself, and I of her.  Maybe when she gets old enough she will want to join her school's SCRABBLE club (Read on to learn more about School SCRABBLE Clubs below).

When I am not using the SCRABBLE game to help Savannah build her vocabulary or learn how to spell, I love pulling out this game when friends and family come to visit.  I am very competitive when it comes to board games, especially SCRABBLE.  I still have the dictionary my parents gave me as a kid, when I asked for it to check words they and my brothers would spell out.  While I was able to prove that most words were made up, the few that were found in the dictionary, helped add words to my vocabulary. :-)

"Played a SCRABBLE game recently? If so, then you know the thrill of a well-played word and the challenge of creating playable words out of seven letters that may not make any sense in the rack. Do your kids know the same thrill? If they haven’t played at home, perhaps they have played at school. Many teachers use SCRABBLE in the classroom to provide a fun and engaging way to help kids develop spelling, vocabulary, math and social skills.

Because of the educational benefits of using SCRABBLE in the classroom, Hasbro has teamed up with teachers and community leaders to create School SCRABBLE Clubs. Designed for kids in 4th through 8th grades, School SCRABBLE Clubs can be established in the classroom, as an after-school club or through other community organizations, such as a library. Kids play in pairs, making it even more fun when they play high value letters on a triple word score! High fives for everyone! "
