Does a book remember it once was a word?

As the boy follows the feather, he is swept away to a world filled with adorable animals, where fantasy and reality come together in surprising and playful ways. From the cake that once was grain to the ocean that once was rain, whimsical "before" and "after" scenes offer readers a peek at the world as seen through the eyes of a curious child, ultimately asking the question, "What will you remember?"

My Thoughts:

What a cute story about what things were before what they are now.  The whole story wraps up with asking if a little boy will remember he once was a child?  As you flip through the pages and see the before and after of things like a chair, a book, a garden, etc. you and your child will find yourselves getting lost in the beautiful illustrations.  They pages are filled with playful animals that really make reading this story a treat with little ones.  My girls keep asking for this book.

If you get a chance to pick up this book, make sure to check out the back page, as it lists some of the author's favorite things to remember like "finding a fossil," "learning to ski" and "Eating jelly at Grandma's."  You find yourself thinking about some of your favorite things, and wanting to share these with your children. :-)

The Tortoise & the Hare
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Price: $18.00 US/$20.00 CAN
Pages: 40
Physical Dimensions: 11" x 9-1/2"
ISBN-13: 9780316183567
On Sale Date: 10/01/2013

Synopsis:

This companion to the Caldecott Medal-winning The Lion & the Mouse is Jerry Pinkney's most stunning masterpiece yet. Even the slowest tortoise can defeat the quickest hare, and even the proudest hare can learn a timeless lesson from the most humble tortoise: Slow and steady wins the race! Here is a superbly rendered journey from starting line to finish that embodies the bravery, perseverance, and humility we can all find inside ourselves.

My Thoughts:

I have a been of Jerry Pinkey since I picked up a copy of popular wordless picture book "The Lion and the Mouse," which published in 2010. This wordless book earned the author the Caldecott Medal, which he was very deserving of if you saw the book.

While I love books with words, I have that if they are too wordy the little ones get restless and try to turn the pages on me when reading to them at bedtime. When this happens, I usually give my own rendition of the story based on the illustrations.  But, if the book is a classic story, and one I grew up listening to and reading, it is much easier after a long day with the girls to tell a story I am familiar, than have to try to come up with a fun story that will keep them engaged.

If you haven't had the chance to pick up Jerry Pinkney's previous book, you really should.  His illustrations along are amazing.  Parents will even find themselves getting lost in the pages. The book is wordless, except for a few words scattered throughout the book, including slow, go, and "Slow and steady wins the race" which appears at the end.  I love these little cue words, which I emphasize and act out when reading to the girls.  They love not feeling overwhelmed with too many words on each page, as they are more into illustrations.  Out of all the children's books I have read recently, which has been a lot :-), this one by far is my favorite when it comes to the illustrations.

Now that I have shared this classic tale with my girls enough times, they can now tell me their own rendition of it, based on the illustrations.  We have a fun time cuddling up, as I listen to them talk about the tortoise and the hare.  This is definitely one book worth picking up, and a must for fans of Jerry Pinkney.

Marc Brown's Playtime Rhymes: A Treasury for Families to Learn and Play Together

Synopsis:

Fingers ready?

Fingers set?

Fingers play!
It's time for Playtime Rhymes-a treasury of twenty favorite finger rhymes compiled and illustrated by the bestselling and beloved artist Marc Brown for the enjoyment of young and old.

From the clever Whoops! Johnny and funny Do Your Ears Hang Low? to the irrepressible Itsy-Bitsy Spider and rousing Wheels on the Bus, these are rhymes to say and sing aloud, each with pictorial instructions for the correlating finger movements.

An interactive experience at its very best, Playtime Rhymes will get little hands wiggling, jiggling, pointing, pounding, bending, stretching, and dancing as children animate the rhymes, pore over the vibrant pictures, and share the fun with family and friends.

My Thoughts:

If the name Marc Brown sounds familiar, that is because he is the author of the best-selling Arthur adventure book series, and co-developer of the hit animated series on PBS, Arthur.  Both of my girls are fan of the show and books, with D.W., Arthur's little sister being their favorite.  So, when I saw that March Brown wrote this book, I couldn't wait to share it with the girls.

After I received and began talking about how great it was with other moms, I found out that Marc Brown had previously come out with another participatory rhyming book called, "Hand Rhymes," which was published back in 1985, back when I was a child.  I asked my mom about this, and see said "Yes, I used to read this book to you kids -- it was one of your favorites!."  Who knew?  Now, years later, I get to share some of my favorite childhood rhymes with my girls in a fun, new ways -- using our hands and bodies to act out the rhymes.

If you are looking for ways to get your children moving, this is the book for you.  The book contains 20 classic rhymes including "Wheels on the Bus" and "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," along with two winter rhymes my girls are loving -- "The Snowman" and "Snowflakes."

Not only are colored pencil illustrations fun to look at, kids can follow along with the suggested interactive motions next to the text.  Oftentimes I will do a motion wrong, just to see if the girls will catch me, and correct me.  Savannah will say, "Mommy, you are doing it wrong.  Go like this" as she acts out the motion.  :-)

This book would be great to surprise toddlers and preschoolers with, as a fun way to introduce them to rhymes through a fun interactive way. We love this book, and I know you and your little one(s) will, too. :-)

Red Knit Cap Girl to the Rescue

Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
    Price: $17.00 US/$19.00 CAN
    Pages: 40
    Physical Dimensions: 9" x 9"
    ISBN-13: 9780316228855
    On Sale Date: 11/05/2013

Synopsis:

'I hope it's not too far away,' says Red Knit Cap Girl. 'Follow the light of the Moon,' calls Owl. In this heartwarming follow-up to Naoko Stoop's debut Red Knit Cap Girl, Red Knit Cap Girl meets a lost Polar Bear Cub. Determined to help him find his way home, to an Arctic land of ice and snow, Red Knit Cap Girl, White Bunny, and Polar Bear Cub set off on an unforgettable voyage. Gorgeously illustrated on wood grain, Red Knit Cap Girl's curiosity, imagination, and joy will captivate the hearts of readers young and old. Simple prose and luminous pictures will remind readers that even small actions - such as recycling - can help to solve big world problems, in this inspiring story that celebrates friendship, bravery, and the importance of home.

My Thoughts:

I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of this follow up book to "Red Kit Cap Girl," which I shared a review of last year.  My girls continue to ask for the first book from author, Naoko Stoop's hopefully long running series, about an adventurous and oh so imaginative little girl in a red knit cap.

This second book was just as good as the first.  It peaked my girls' interest as this time it included a cute polar bear cub who is lost and needs help finding his way home.  Leave it to Red Knit Cap Girl and her trusty white bunny to come to the rescue and help the bear return home safely.

Not only is the story sweet and one that little ones can understand, but the illustrations are amazing.  I find myself picking up this book or lingering on a page when reading to the girls just to admire the illustrations.  You have to see this book for yourself, as it really it a great book to not only share, but start building your "Red Knit Cap Girl" collection with.

And, here are a selection of Christmas and Winter themed children's books that are worth checking out from LB-Kids.  We have been reading these before nap time and at bed.  The girls can't seem to get enough of them. Their favorite by far is "The Very Fairy Princess: Sparkles in the Snow" written by Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton.  If you are a fan of the "The Very Fairy Princess" #1 New York Best Selling series, then you will love this new addition.
