Synopsis:

Porkchop the Pig teaches the story of the Prodigal Son in a funny and memorable way!

"Wacky animals and their hilarious antics will have kids rolling with laughter as they watch the story of Porkchop (Randy Travis), a pig with dreams of making it big in the music business—no matter the cost!

Farmer Bob gives Porkchop the money he needs to follow his dreams, but the friends Porkchop makes in the big city don’t turn out to be as nice as he thought. When Jenny the sheepdog (Amy Grant) and some of the other animals save the day, Farmer Bob welcomes Porkchop home with open arms, and even Hercules the tough-talking rooster (Vince Gill) learns the value of forgiveness.
Bonus educational features include a music video and cartoon based on the letter P, a read-along digital storybook that lets kids decide when to “turn the page,” and an option to view the entire Prodigal Pig DVD with pop-up Ps every time a word that begins with P is used! A literacy message to parents is also included.

More bonus features include bloopers, character commentary, and a behind-the-scenes look at how Farmer Bob’s farm was created! Based on the Parable of the Prodigal Son, this funny and educational DVD will have kids laughing and learning along with their favorite farm critters!"

My Thoughts:

While my girls are too young to really understand and appreciate this fun, youthful spin on the Prodigal Son Savannah did sit with me and her cousins the other day as we the recent release from Tommy Nelson, "The Prodigal Pig."  The story centers around Porkchop the pig, who is voiced by Randy Travis, as he longs for fame and fortune.  So, to pursue his dreams of making it big in the music business, he asks the farmer for his allowance to help fund his trip.  Farmer Bob lets him go and wishes him well.

Everything seems to be working out great, until Porkchop realizes that what he had imagined in his head wasn't actually we he got once he got to the big city.  People were not nice and didn't stay around when he was

So, what was Porkchop to do?  He ends up going back to the farm.  And, to his surprise, he is welcomed back with open arms by Jenny the Sheepdog (voiced by Amy Grant) and Hercules the rooster (voiced by Vince Gill), along with Farmer Bob.  Porkchop, through his experience, learns that you can return home, as well as about forgiveness.

Overall, I have to say that was a very enjoyable movie, and one that children around 6+ would truly understand the meaning and values shared.  I can't wait to share this movie again with my girls and talk about what they saw and learned further.  But, in the meantime, they are enjoying another farm movie, with talking animals. :-)  If you get a chance to pick up a copy of this movie, make sure you check out the bonus features, which includes a music video, mini cartoons, a read along storybook and so much more.  This DVD features the letter "P," making this DVD a great literacy tool for young children.
