PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

"This latest installment in the nationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning Mo Willems DVD line from SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES™ features three animated adaptations of stories by the New York Times best-selling author: Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late; Knuffle Bunny Free: An Unexpected Diversion; and Edwina, the Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct. Narrators for these stories include Cher Willems, John Scieszka and Mo Willems himself.

In the title story, it's getting dark outside, but one stubborn Pigeon is NOT going to bed! As The New York Times says, "Pigeon can stand toe- to-ideographic-toe with Mickey Mouse and Charlie Brown," and this story is no exception."

My Thoughts:

I first stumbled across Mo Willems while pregnant with Savannah.  While in the womb, I loved reading to her every night, so that she could get used to my voice.  My husband would opt for the Spanish language books, while I was drawn to authors like Mo Willems.   And, once Savannah and then Arabella, were born, I continued to share Mo Willems books with them.  Savannah's loves the Knuffle Bunny books, while Arabella is a fan of the Pigeon books.  So, when I recently heard that the folks at Scholastic Storybook Treasures were releasing a DVD showcasing some of Mo Willems's popular children's books, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy.

I ended up reading the different Mo Willems' books to the girls at bedtime, and then would follow up the next morning with one of the stories from this DVD.  The girls loved seeing their favorite characters come alive on the TV screen.  Arabella, especially, loved seeing the Pigeon, as she tried to mimic it. :-)  Each of the three cartoons that make up this DVD are based on classic Mo Willems books.  They teach respect, growth, and problem solving skills to young children, while keeping them engaged for about 30 minutes.  With two young children at home, I loved how these playful cartoons were short in length, so I could choose to play on cartoon at a time, or let the DVD run for the entire 27 minutes.  In addition to the three cartoons, this DVD also included a bonus feature section that featured an interview with Mo Willems, a recipe for Edwina's Chocolate Chip Cookies, as well a fun read along option.

If you are a Mo Willems fan, or are looking for a great children's book author, then you will love this new DVD release from Scholastic Storybook Treasures, which features some of Mo Willems' classic stories brought to life in fun, short cartoons.

  1. Mo Willems is great! We are a big reading family, and I introduced my grandkids to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! They loved it! I like the fun stories and character building. I hadn't heard about this movie but will pass it along. Glad your family is enjoying them, too!
